  • Great Sound and Super Comfortable
Color: Black
For: Those who find ear buds uncomfortable or struggle to find a snug fit; Anyone who likes to hear the outside world while wearing headphones. I am in love with these headphones because of how they sound, how they feel when they are on my ears, AND because they don't block out the sound of the world around me. If you want noise-canceling, stop reading. While they are a little tough to get settled into just the right spot on my ears — I've had them for over two months and I still seem to think they're not on right when I put them on — once they are secure, I forget they're on almost instantly. I use these at the gym for my hour-long daily workouts. I don't think I've been able to get more than three workouts in without getting the audible warning that the battery is low, so I question Bose's claim about an 8-hour battery life. Frustratingly, you can't just stick them in their case and get another couple charges out of them. The case is just a case, not a combination charger and case. If you are looking for features you might be used to from other true wireless earbuds, you may be disappointed. They don't pause when you take one off of your ear like most wireless earbuds do. And see above about not being able to charge them in their case. Also, I don't perceive a benefit from the app so I have not downloaded it to "(g)et tips, control music, personalize settings, and get started right away" as Bose says. I just want to hear high quality music, not use these with my Google assistant. As far as high quality music is concerned, these are the best sounding small wireless 'phones I've ever used. I say "small" to differentiate them from bigger cans like my Grado GW100 V2's to which the Boses don't compare. But I can't (or won't) wear the Grados to the gym. For a small, workout-ready, sweat- and weather-resistant set of wireless headphones that sound incredible for their size, these can't be beat and are well worth the price. ... show more

  • Disappointing - too many little failures
Color: Black
I wanted these to work so bad. The QC35 II were the best thing I have bought for air travel, but I needed something with a lower profile like earbuds for wearing while I work. I have never had a pair of earbuds be able to stay in my ears so the idea of skipping that step sounded wonderful. And to be honest the one good thing about these is that the sound quality is really good with only a little bit of audio leaking for other people to hear when the volume is jacked up. And even with the volume up I still have good awareness of the sounds around me which is critical for safety. But there were so many other little things that make these horrible. First, they are not comfortable and caused pain with only an hour of use. I have come to terms with the fact I am a larger person and things are not going to be designed with me in mind, but I expected there to be at least a little bit of adjustability to account for different ear sizes. There is absolutely no adjustability or give. If your ears are not just right these are not going to fit you. I am finding it's not worth the $200 gamble for a small chance that these will be comfortable for you. Second, the charger is separate from the case...... why..... why Bose..... why.... every other competitor in this price range (and even in the lower ranges) has the charger in the case. I travel for a living and space is limited. The last thing I need is to pack a large docking station with a permanently connected cable, with no easy way to manage the cable, on top of the separate case for the buds. Third, the charger uses a USB-A connector. These came out in 2020, there is no reason why it shouldn't be a PD compatible USB-C. And it should be a separate cable that plugs into the charger and not hardwired for easy storage. Fourth, the battery life is not for all day use. I only used them for 6 hours (in 30-60 minute blocks before they were to painful to wear) before they died from a full charge. And hopefully you are by a wall or have a battery bank and the needlessly cumbersome charger to connect these for an hour to get through the rest of the day. Fifth, be ready to get another app if you have any legacy Bose products. You have to download Bose Music to connect/configure these, you cannot use the Bose Connect that my QC35 II requires. It wouldn't bug me as much if I could also configure the QC35 II in Bose Music so I only had to have one app for both devices. Sixth and final, the price. Understanding that Bose products do cost more than other competitive products, every Bose speaker and headphones I had up to this point I felt were worth the higher price. Even if these worked as intended, I would still be grumpy about the price and likely would have returned them on that alone unless they completely blew me away. My wife has a pair of wrap around earbuds that address every issue listed above, with the exceptions of the open ear, that she got for $30... If I'm going to pay 6 times the cost I'm going to expect something at least as functional. In conclusion, these could have been amazing, and I think that is the part that makes this more painful. Out of the dozen Bose products I have used in my lifetime every one has at least met, and most exceeded, my expectations until these earbuds. I expect better from you Bose. ... show more

  • Works surprisingly well!
Color: Black
I own many Bose products ranging from headphones to portable speakers and sound bars. And I'm pleased that Open Earbuds' sound signature is similar to other Bose products. I'm prone to ear infections and I can't use headphones for an extended time (more than 30min). That's why I own the now-discontinued Bose Sound Wear. The Sound Wear also works well, but it feels a little funny on your shoulder, and other people around you can hear the speaker. This new Open Earbud is also good for my ear health, but sounds slightly different. Its mid and bass ranges are equal to headphones like Sound Sport (slightly better than Sound Wear), but the treble is tad bit discolored, losing its sharpness somewhat. If you listen to news or podcast, no problem at all. When I listen to the radio, I can't understand what nearby people say (I can hear mumbles and noises), even if my ears are open. And the earbuds are barely audible to nearby people in a quiet room. If I listen to music at a low volume, then I can talk to other people (But I don't think it's useful or respectful to do). At this low volume, people around you won't hear the buds at all. Overall, it still sounds great. It's easy to wear with one hand. Though, after hours of use, my ears get a little uncomfortable (pinched feeling, but not so hard). That being said, I'm happy to use it whenever I'm washing dishes, shopping or working in the living room. On a final note, the microphone is not so great and noisy. Short phone calls are ok, but I won't use this for meetings. ... show more

  • I like them... I don't love them
Color: Black
I adore the idea of these headphones. I've never found a pair of ear buds that don't become painful (or just plain fall out) within half hour of wearing them, and I don't like wearing over-ear headphones while I'm out walking -- it feels much safer to me to be able to hear my environment. (Not to mention headphone sweat on these 90-degree summer days is not a great look...) Open earbuds feel like a brilliant solution to several problems. Comfort-wise, these are fine but not phenomenal. The hard plastic of the earpieces is frankly a lot more comfortable than I expected, but I can still only wear them for a finite amount of time before the contact points between the headphones and my ears start to ache. Maybe an hour, and by two hours I have to take them off. I absolutely don't understand why I had to install another app (Bose Music) on my phone to make these work. I already have a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort headphones and one of their bluetooth speakers, both of which use the Bose Connect app. The Bose Music app won't work with those existing pieces of gear, and the Connect app won't work with the new open earbuds. I can only hope this is resolved in the future, but for now it makes me (perhaps slightly irrationally) angry at the phone clutter and inefficiency of it all. Sound quality is absolutely fine -- don't buy these for when you really want to settle in with an important music and appreciate all the nuance in it though. That's not what these are for. Anyone who's going too deep into the sound quality is overthinking things. These are not headphones-for-all-occasions, so if that's what you're looking for, keep looking. The isolation is really impressive though -- even in a quiet room, I can't hear what's being played from these once I'm maybe 18" away from them. And even then, what I can hear is very slight. I do wish these got a *little* louder. I live in NYC and the ambient noise floor of general existence here is... not quiet. These are pretty much a no-go on the subway or near particularly loud traffic. That said, I also understand that it would be dangerous to allow these to get TOO loud, since playing sound loud enough to drown out OTHER loud sound could become damaging to one's hearing pretty quickly. While I haven't whipped out an SPL meter in moments where it's not getting loud enough for my taste, my gut says this limit is set rather conservatively. YMMV on this one though. These unfortunately seem to be unusable for calls. I like to walk while on calls for work and have had multiple people tell me either the wind noise is so significant they can't understand me, or that the connection is just plain bad (which is always fixed by switching to my phone or my QC headphones). Battery life is so-so... haven't done precise testing to get an exact number here, but it feels like the battery life while not in use is only a few days. I've been disappointed on several occasions to grab them from my bag only to find them dead. I do hope the charge-in-case functionality other reviewers have mentioned is introduced in a future model; personally I don't mind needing a dedicated charger, but that combined with mediocre battery life is kind of a drag. I generally use these for walking so haven't put them through the paces of more intense exercise, but am pretty impressed at their stability. It definitely feels like they could withstand more of a beating than I put them through. Overall, this is (as far as I know) a completely new category of product in the market, and they were only recently released. I knew it was a bit of a risk when I bought them, and despite my honest and exhaustive accounting of where I feel improvements can be made, I don't regret the purchase and have found lots of use for them. Many of these could be fixed with app or firmware updates, and I definitely hope a v2 comes out in the next year or two that incorporates hardware changes like making the earpieces a little more malleable, and incorporating charge-in-case functionality. ... show more

  • great for wrestlers with cauliflower ear!
Color: Black
Exceptional sound, but with some gaps that I'm hoping will be improved in a future version. Because I have "cauliflower" ears, for my entire adult life I've been constrained to headphones which covered my entire ear. Every in ear headset either hurts my ears, falls out quickly, or doesn't fit in at all. I've always wanted the convenience of something small and wireless but still with great sound. I looked into bone conduction as a solution but they have a slight sound degradation and people I have talked with comment that if you want to play them louder then they tend to cause discomfort and an unpleasant vibration on your skull. Then I found these. For me, these are a dream because I can wear them without any issues from my ears and the sound is exceptional (as expected with Bose). They do an excellent job of noise cancellation for people talking around you, and yet the open ear completely allows for important sounds like car horns, or even raised voices, etc. Unfortunately there are a few downsides that I would think could be easily improved in a future version. If Bose does so I would buy a new pair in a heartbeat. 1. Travel case is not up to solid standards. It is sturdy and easy to use. However, it does not have charging ability one would expect with a quality true wireless product. Other products have a case which not only holds the earbuds but also used to charge them. And many have capacitance to help charge even when traveling. The charging station is laid out the same way as the case and physically could easily fit inside it. I can't imagine it would be too challenging to integrate it into the case. 2. Fit and comfort has room to improve. Many comments from others already discuss this challenge and truthfully it's not entirely clear the exact angle they should rest on your ear. If you turn them forward too much then they do tweak on the top of your ear pretty good. I've found that sliding them forward to that point and then adjusting just a bit back gives them the ability to stay snug without being too uncomfortable. Nevertheless, it still takes some getting used to. I push through it because it's better than shoving a bud in my ear, but admittedly, it could still be more comfortable. In short, if they could make them settle more naturally and fit more comfortably, it would be a major improvement. 3. Size is too large. These are by far largest of any of the true wireless earbuds I experimented with when I found these. To the point where I kind of feel embarrassed wearing them as they look like the giant shoes you got when you couldn't afford the nice light shoes. And no doubt a lighter footprint would instantly improve both the ability to make a charging case as well as improve the comfort and fit over the ears. 4. Very limited remote controls. The things you can do are cumbersome and sometimes not even available. * Sound control is hard to enable. First it was not clear how to do it. The instructions on the app don't match the phone, nor what's shown in the app. Apparently I have to update the app to enable it but it will never update past what is installed. So I can't seem to turn this on. * Pause/Play is the same button used to turn on and off. Often I try to pause or play and instead it turns off because I held it just a tad too long. Further, when I am in a noisy environment, the sound used to indicate they are turning on or off is very hard to hear and I often can't tell if I turned them on, or off in those situations. * skip forward is also the same button. Instead you double click which isn't terrible until you consider that... * skip backwards is ALSO the same button. This time you triple click. Unless you are careful, you can mess up and go forward instead of back, or go back instead of forward, or pause and then unpause instead of skipping forward, or pause then skip forward instead of skipping back, etc. Yet, the worse part is just the pain of it. Especially going back to the previous song. One triple click gets you to the front of the current song, and then a second triple click jumps you back to the previous. Not only is this 6 clicks annoying, but because it takes a longer moment I find that I have to really be aggressive because if I pause too long after the first triple click, the song has played long enough that completing the second triple click just brings me back to the beginning of the same song again. I have to really hit three and then three again fast in order to go back. * left button is only used for one thing: battery check. I'm okay with that but really only need to check the battery rarely and can easily do that from my phone. How much better would it be to double click that to go back? Left double click would be back and right double would be forward. No more triple clicking, no more messing up forward with back, and easier to remember. 5. Battery drains quickly even when not used. I've noticed that if I charge them fully and then go a few days without wearing them the battery still drains. Yesterday I removed them from the charger to take them somewhere. I didn't end up using them and yet when I put them on today they were already down to 20%??? In summary it appears I have many complaints though in reality I have only tried to be open and detailed on the flaws which I think could (and SHOULD) easily be improved. In total the sound is amazing, it's a solution for someone like me which I cannot find with ANY OTHER earbud, and I easily chose it over several other expensive earbuds I tried out. (My wife got the newer Apple AirPods which have many of the improvements I listed here but they only fit in my right ear, not left, and even then it falls out from time to time even just walking. If you want something that doesn't go IN your ear but still gives you superior sound with the ease and flexibility of true wireless earbuds. These are the ones for you. ... show more

  • They Do What They are Made to Do
Color: Black
I have waited five months before writing this review. I love these headphones! I was on the hunt for earbuds that would allow me to hear the dog and the kids, to hear people at work, and to be aware of my surroundings on a run. I am so happy that there is a demand for this sort of product! the sound is phenomenal. I paid the extra money for Bose quality since I need my music to sound AMAZING, but also am new to the world of open ear technology. I figured Bose would get it right, and I was not mistaken. During the first week, my ears did sort of hurt a little bit after removing the earbuds after an hour of use. Over time though, my ears are completely used to the items that I am placing on them and the headphones NEVER hurt anymore. It is just an adjustment and a change, just like anything else we do to our bodies. I actually forgot that they used to hurt a little in the beginning until I read some of these reviews. They do not fall out of my ears ever. They are so comfortable that I sometimes forget I’m wearing them until someone points it out. They are, however, a bit larger and not at all discreet. But again, that was not on my list of requirements and works fine for me. I do make sure to keep them charged as I could easily kill the battery within a day. This hasn’t been a problem since I know and plan to keep them ready. I admit that I have dropped them numerous times and they still work great. Easy to connect to and to use the buttons, the app, and the various controls. Friends and family say that sound quality is good for chatting on the phone, however some noise is present I’d you are munching while you talk ;) Hope you enjoy your purchase! ... show more

  • Back To The Drawing Board, Bose
Color: Black
I bought these because I have the newest generation Bose sunglasses and they're amazing. They have incredible battery life and sound but I wanted to be able to wear different sunglasses without losing the open ear concept. When I saw these I thought they'd fit the bill but, much like the 1st generation sunglasses these miss the mark for a few reasons: Battery life. Battery life. Battery life. While these buds claim to have 6 to 8hrs of play time (I've gotten a solid 8hrs out of the glasses). I couldn't get mine to last more than an hour and half tops! I couldn't get them to charge past 40% (I'll get to the disappointing charging method in a moment) and the 40% drained quickly. This tells me that at max charge I'd get maybe 4hrs. The charger is far from convenient. The magnetic charging "station" is clumsy and may or may not be reliable considering my inability to bring the buds to a full charge. It's also not mobile friendly due to it having to sit flat while charging. Proprietary is never a customer friendly option, Bose. You should have learned that with the 1st generation glasses with the proprietary charger. As for comfort, that's relative for so many reasons. I have average ears and found that they fit fairly well. They do feel secure once you get used to them but at first I was a bit apprehensive as I work around water all day but, they stayed in place. They aren't comfy with thicker framed glasses such as Raybans but work fine with slim armed aviator style frames. As far as sound quality goes I can say they do sound as good as the newest generation sunglasses but the volume control scenario isn't that great. You tap/swipe the right bud to increase volume and left side to lower it. I say tap/swipe because it isn't consistent. Sometimes when you swipe nothing happens but if you tap the bud it will work. There are definitely latency issues as well which compound that lack of consistency with changing the volume. Overall, for an hour long workout these will suffice but if you want them for longer treks such as hiking or biking you may want to wait for the next generation to be released as these still seem to have a few kinks. ... show more

  • Sound quality better than expected
Color: Black
Definitely a better sound than i imagine. The sound is the same as if they were inside the ear. Only down fall is the comfort, mainly at first. Do make ear hurt a bit from the weight with each use the little discomfort is less. If the part that goes on back of the ear would be smaller (skinny) it would be a big plus and would then be nearly perfect for outter ear headphones. Ialso if they had a wireless charger then they would be perfect! But still satisfied with them. Battery life is great, used them once for 6 hours straight and still had life left in them. ... show more
