I don't know if I would consider myself an audiophile, but I am always on the search for a better sound. Over the past five years I have purchased numerous headphones. If I could only keep one pair of headphones out of all my headsets, which includes the following: - JVC HA-FW01 - VModa Crossfade M-100 - Sennheiser HD 558 - Sennheiser HD 650 - Bose QuiteComfort 15 - Bose QuiteComfort 35 - Bose TriPort - Audio-Technia BPHS1 - Sony MDR1RNC I would take the Bose QuietComfort 20, hands down. No, they do not sound the best. That award would go to the JVC HA-FW01 (with the VModa Crossfade M-100 and Sennheiser HD 650 coming in 2nd and 3rd, respectively). But they sound good enough that I enjoy listening to them as much as my other headphones, especially if I am coding and the music is background noise to help me work. Unlike most Bose noise-cancelling products, these actually sound decent with the noise cancelling off. In fact, that is how I use them 99% of the time. It is not that charging is a hassle (if I want to leave the noise cancelling on I just run a USB cable to them and they power up just fine; unlike most other Bose products these do not experience much if any interference while charging). It is that I prefer the sound without all the noise-cancelling DSP enhancements. However, if you need noise cancelling these are the best noise-cancelling headphones in Bose's lineup, for under $300. I feel they do a much better job of cancelling noise than the QC 15 or 35's. Works great if you are in an office building with a loud HVAC system or noisy computer. Next, these are the most portable headphones I have owned. Yes, I have headphones with a smaller case (e.g. the Bose TriPort) and they are always clunky to use. With these I can coil up the cord, put it in a case, and be on my way in 15-30 seconds. Easy peasy. Quality wise they are on par with other products. I have on more than one occasion gotten up from my desk, and got the cord tangled up and pulled the jack out of whatever device it is in. Never had the cord fray or break, and I am on my 3rd pair of these headphones (lost one pair commuting on a motorcycle; bought two pair more for work/home so I would not lose them during the commute). Never had any quality issues. The ear tips stay in place, unlike the Bose TriPort headphones. But the real reason I would pick these over anything else: Comfort. These are the most comfortable headphones, bar none. Even other Bose headphones pale in comparison (except the TriPort, which are equally comfortable). All over the ear headphones get sweaty eventually, and the faux leather on Bose products typically goes bad after 6 to 18 months. Never had the silicone go bad on these headphones, even after several years of 8 hour a day, 5 day a week abuse. In fact, although my JVC HA-FW01 sound better, the only way I can stand to use them for more than a few hours is by using the extra silicone ear tips that come with the QuietComfort 20 headphones. Overall, these are the headphones that stay on my desk. Other headphones come out on special occasions, or if I am listening to certain types of music. But if I am going to be wearing headphones for 8, 12, or even 16+ hours, these are the puppies I am using. Also, even though I do not use the feature, it is worth mentioning that there is a microphone built into these headphones, where the volume buttons are, and if you get a splitter jack from Bose, you can use these as a headset. I have a co-worker who does that. He sounds pretty good most of the time.

I wanted noise cancelling earbuds to wear at the gym to defeat the obnoxious, raucous noise the management insists on pumping through their PA system, telling me most clients love this "music." My word, music it most assuredly is not. What's on my iPod is music. And that's what I want to hear. But I couldn't with the simple earbuds I had. The noise pollution at the gym is so intrusive, there's no way I can enjoy my own music. Why do these people think it's conducive to exercise to inundate the space with that noise at an ear-splitting volume? No attempts on my part get them to change, not even to turn the volume down to a reasonable level. So . . . I went shopping for active noise cancelling units. Every review (more or less) contains the comment, "Well, these aren't Bose, but for the price, these aren't awful." I took people at their word . . . as I went through 3 other sets trying to find one that worked. Invariably, the other units made my iPod sound like it was in another room at the bottom of fish tank. There was sometimes a button I could push that would improve the sound a little, but the button sprang back as soon as I let go of it, returning me to their underwater environment. One unit didn't even include a charging cable. I didn't even plug them in before I returned them. Sure, these units were only in the $30 price range, but what good were they if they didn't work? I decided maybe there's a reason the Bose ones are the price they are. Maybe there's a reason people keep comparing every other unit on the market to Bose. I decided to find out for myself. I decided to break down & let the moths out of my wallet & spring for these. I don't do very well with earbuds. They tend to fall our of my ears easily. The Bose earbuds have little extenders that fit in the crevices of the ear & hold them securely in place without any discomfort, no matter how long I wear them. Score 1 for Bose. The first time I stuck these in my ears, I was astonished at how much the background noise was blocked out. This is without even turning on the active noise cancelling. I'd say the ear pieces by themselves block a good 80% of ambient noise. Score another 1 for Bose. And then I turned on the active noise cancelling. It was like an out-of-body experience. There's you & the music, & whoever might be around you simply isn't there. Score another 1 . . . no 1,000 for Bose. Try wearing them in the car while you're driving. You'll feel like Luke Skywalker. Suddenly your car becomes even quieter than an electric car, more like a nuclear-powered aircraft. No engine noise, no noise from other vehicles, not even any tire noise from your own car. Simply extraordinary. There's no point in even bothering to still keep score. There's no competition. The instruction manual for these says they're compatible with iPhones. There's no mention of any other brand. I recently acquired an Android phone & thought I'd give them a shot. My expectations were low. I should have known better. Plug them in. They work. Period. I don't know if the buttons do fancy things like skipping around in playlists or stop music so you can take a phone call. But for basic phone calls, they just work. You hear the other party on the line just fine. The other party hears you just fine. This is without turning on the noise cancelling. Turning on the noise cancelling has no effect on how the other party hears you, but of course it transports you to that other sound world I described above. I don't make it a habit to use the active noise cancelling for phone calls because I haven't used the unit to talk on the phone in a noisy environment. Maybe somebody else can comment on that. I would imagine if it's noisy, the other party won't hear you all that well over the background noise. Maybe the microphone is noise cancelling, too. I just can't comment on that. My take is it's more polite toward the party you're calling if you make the phone call in a quiet place. My only complaint is the carrying case. For an item this expensive, they sure give you a cheap carrying case. It's soft & about the only good thing I can say about it is it would keep the unit dust-free. Protect them it will not. I happen to have a steel-shell glasses case that I wasn't using. That is a far more appropriate place for my earbuds to live when they're hibernating. That's what Bose should have included with these: something made of steel. And they should have done that without adding to the price. These are expensive enough to warrant the inclusion of a steel carrying case. These earbuds live up to the hype. They prove you get what you pay for. My voice is not being added to the chorus of, "Well, these aren't Bose, but . . ." These ARE Bose & there's no buts about it.

These are so good that it's hard to write a review on the experience. I use these primarily at a desk in a large office. They do great at filtering out the HVAC noise and the general 'din' that is always around. Our office is generally pretty quiet, so there is a slight perception of a hiss when using without music (just the activated earbuds in), but it is very slight. What is remarkable is that when men are talking, I can see it but can't hear them. Lots of us wear earbuds, so the generally accepted practice when walking up to a desk is knocking on the desk... can't hear it. With the higher frequencies in women's voices, I can still hear the voices, but at an enormously reduced volume, add music and they go away. There are some things that I didn't expect with them. One is that there are lots of sounds that you are just used to hearing, and their absence takes a while to get used to. For instance your own footsteps when going down stairs. It was actually a bit disorienting at first as apparently your body uses the noise as a bit of feedback. Now that I am used to it, there is no problem, but for a while I had to pay close attention going down stairs. Other sounds like setting a cup down on the table and closing a drawer just don't exist, it must be like being deaf but just in a certain spectrum. There are a few noises that it does not know how to deal with. For some reason shutting the car door is one, it is like a cannon goes off in each ear. Driving with them is what I would call dangerous, but I want to explain the sound side of driving. The wind noise and 'engine' noise goes away. What you are left with is higher pitched noises that when combined with vibrations that you didn't notice before (because there was an accompanying sound) leaves and uneasy feeling that something may not be right with the car. I turn them off, sure enough everything sounds normal, turn them back on and the same feeling comes back. It has left me aware that hearing is a precious sense that we easily take for granted. On the riding lawn mower, the engine sound fades into the background and what is left is the higher pitched sounds of the belts, bearings, and blades. Makes mowing a much more pleasant experience. For the audio quality, callers say it sounds as good as the iphone mic, on my end of course it's much better with the muted environment. Music sounds as good as any $50+ earbuds. Comfort is perhaps not as great as I expected, I am pretty sensitive to pressure from earbuds and hearing protection. The silicone pieces fit good and don't put much pressure in any one place. I can wear them for several hours, but am happy to have them off for a while after. As a comparison most cheap earbuds I can't stand the pressure for more than 30 minutes or so. My favorite two pair are on par with these. If you are noise sensitive but enjoy music, audio books, or interviews, you will love these. If you are noise sensitive and plan to use these just for active noise canceling without input, I think you will just perceive different noises but a reduced volume. I had a hard time spending the money (actually bought them used) but they are worth every penny. Again I tried to describe an unexplainable experience, but I would (will) definitely buy them again.

1. Active noise cancelling is a revelation. I write in a café that sometimes blasts loud music. Until I got these, I worried about damaging my hearing having to play the music too loud. This week someone nearby was on a long business call, which usually would be highly distracting; with active noise cancelling I was in my own world. Sound is not entirely blocked, but profoundly reduced. (The wired version with active noise cancelling does even better, if that's a priority for you, but I found them too bulky among other annoyances - plus I think mine were lemons - software glitch that hurt my ears with sudden loud sounds.) 2. The most comfortable ear buds yet (I've tried a dozen or more brands); and, these stay put. Can wear them all day. 3. Bluetooth is usually seamless (but not always). I'm spoiled; I can never go back to being wired to my phone again. So many advantages to bluetooth, being completely hands free PLUS untethered. I've had a lot of crappy bluetooth sets where calls are often not clear, and so forth. I was concerned that the technology had not advanced sufficiently for a seamless experience with calls+music. At first this pair did drop the phone signal a few times for no reason, but after the first few days, haven't done it again; they do tend to drop out if I wander too far away from my phone into another room. It's usually not a problem because I tend to have my iphone with me in a cell-crossbody pouch. I've had other sets where I could wander away from the phone, outside onto the porch, and they'd still be working. But I've been noticing that happening less, so maybe there's some strange adjustment period with the technology - and there has been one software update since I purchased these. 4. Sound: Calls are clear on both ends (relief! a constant challenge with all the other bluetooth earbuds I've tried); music is clear (not an audiophile, but works for me) 5. Best experience for secure wearability and comfort. Neck piece is surprisingly comfortable with plenty of room around my neck, but not too much, and has advantages I wouldn't have thought of. I really like being able to have the earbuds just dangle when not in use (or can slip them under the collar of my dress). Someone complained that they should have magnets, which might be a nice option for some, but having them just dangle from the neck piece is far more comfortable and trouble free for me. I especially like that I don't have to worry that they might get caught up in my hair or slip off - as other bluetooth earbuds have done that have a short wire around the neck. 6. Battery life: seems to work almost all day - haven't timed it yet, but if I do, will update. 7. Wish you could plug them and use them at the same time. Sigh. 8. Bose app - Very easy to get up and running with the app, plus tweek limited preferences. The app also facilitates software updates - the most recent said it was improving the active noise cancelling software. That is encouraging; maybe it will get even better with future updates. 9. It is not an exaggeration to say these are life changing: melting away, all those countless ordinary obstacles in daily life, wrestling with wires, sound quality, annoying glitches in wearability, and so forth. Thank you, Bose - truly life changing.

I have a pair of Bose QC25's at home and wanted something more portable for the train ride to work. While searching around for noise isolating in ear monitors, I checked into these QC20's as something better than the standard headphone set. What really sold me on these headphones was the ability of having the ability to turn on ambient noise and smaller profile of the earbuds. When I use the QC25's I feel like they are failry small for the size but still take up room in my backpack. With the QC20's they are much smaller, can fit in my cargo pants pocket. The fitment I would say is much better than I expected with other Bose earbuds. When comparing the other series, these larger eartips fit my ears near perfect. While they do not block out sound like an inserted earbud, it's a great balance between comfort and sound. The fitment is also a plus as I'm finding the majority of non-over the ear cable routed earbuds will not stay in my ears. Since the fitment works so well, these earbuds don't have any pressure to stay in my ears like other headsets. So there's less playing with the fitment and more time spent on work or just simple listening. Sounds silly but these little things are really annoying especially when you're traveling and have your hands full. For the sound the headset sounds great given that it's primary function is noise canceling. While these do not sound like a nice set of open back headphones, they are enough to enjoy music while on the plane/train/bus ride. The only thing I can say is that when you power the active noise canceling feature, it doesn't sound so great but that's well known in the Bose world. For the main feature, the active noise canceling is a big win. If you haven't experienced this, it's pretty amazing and sounds that drone on (think of the A/C sound in your car) can be easily muted. It's even enough to make you suddenly notice that the A/C in your office does make a lot of noise when you take these off. :) But what I really like is that with the QC20's the feeling of the noise canceling is slightly less powerful than on the QC25's. For me personally the QC25's give me slight headaches and pressure in my ears from the very powerful noise canceling feature. I still can't wear the QC20's for hours on end but it's much more comfortable than the QC25's. I suspect this is the amount of ambient noise leakage into the earbuds, vs the over the ear headphones of the QC25's. Something that was really surprising how well it worked was the ambient aware mode. Basically you click a button on your remote, and this turns on the mic so you can hear the ambient sounds without taking off the earphones. Sounds silly but it works surprisingly well. You can hear the people around you, listen to announcements over the intercom, order your coffee without readjusting your earbuds. So some of the issues I found with these headphones is that the battery pack is IMHO too close to the end plug. When I would keep my phone in my pocket, it was difficult to have them both in the pocket and with the cable being slightly short, resulted in the battery pack dangling out of my pocket. If Bose added a few more inches to the cable, this might give you the option to store the phone in your pocket but keep the battery pack in another location, or even clip this to your jacket. Overall, I think these are the best noise canceling option for earbuds out there. They are pricey but if you spend hours on the train, it's worth the comfort.

This is an item worth splurging on even if you're not a frequent traveler. I've always written off Bose as being overpriced. Thankfully I gave these a shot because they surpass all the hype. "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." The noise reduction in these headphones are magic. Not only do they block steady droning sounds, like all noise-reducing headphones do, but they do it extremely well. They're also fairly good at unsteady sounds like voices which most headphones cannot compensate for. These are also the most comfortable earbuds I've ever worn. Most earbuds, especially noise-cancelling ones, try to plug up your ear to block out even more sound than what the electronics can handle which can become uncomfortable after an hour or two and are impossible to sleep on. Bose forgoes that trick and allows the earpiece to simply rest gently in your ear without attempting to form a seal. You can barely feel that they're there. After 8 hours of continuous use you won't feel fatigued by them. The first drawback is that the electronics-and-battery pack is a little too close to the headphone jack. If you're sitting on a plane or train and rest your phone in your lap it's not an issue, but if you want to leave your phone in your pocket (to listen to music) or hold the phone up front of you (to watch a video) you will find the pack often dangles awkwardly. You can usually find a way to grip it so it's out of the way, but if the distance between the pack and the jack was 1-2 inches longer it would help significantly. A clip on the pack to attach it to your pocket or waistline would also help. That said, the electronics pack is very lightweight and slim in profile compared to many other noise-cancelling headphones. The battery lasts longer than I need (I haven't tested it, but Bose's claims seem to hold true). The second drawback is that the sound isn't great unless the noise cancelling is turned on. There is zero bass and the mids are a little low as well. You could probably listen to a podcast just fine, but for music it doesn't sound good. With the noise cancelling switched on the sound is fantastic—not bassy, not tinny, just right. The iPhone clicker works well. There's a shirt clip in a good place that's easy to attach and detach. Overall, these headphones are best in class. They are just about worth the $300. At $200 they'd be an absolute steal. I only travel once a year (round trip flight plus many trains) and I found them worth the cost. I bought them just before a trip with the intent of selling them afterward, but I'm definitely keeping them for the long haul.

I love love love these things!! I love them so much that I've named mine "The Cone of Silence" (yeah, it's a Dune reference...;) ). Let me share a couple of anecdotes just to convey how amazing these are. I work in a cube farm and sometimes I just need quiet while I'm coding, but there are always people having random meetings, chatting, whatever. I put these on, flip the switch, and it's like I'm teleported to a library. AMAZING! Sure, I can still hear them, but it's like they're far away. Not only that, but I never realized how loud the HVAC system was until I took these off after wearing them for awhile. Also, I wear glasses and over ear headphones can be painful, but these are totally comfortable. No squishing of glasses into my head! Once in awhile I sleep over at my partner's place, but he lives too close to the airport and also has noisy neighbors. It's awful and I can barely sleep. One night I got so fed up I thought I'd try sleeping with The Cone of Silence. They worked! It was like being back at my quiet place in the country. Plus they were comfortable enough that I was able to sleep for several hours. And one more story that many people will hopefully find helpful. I recently went on a trip to Europe. I used these headphones to watch a movie, but afterwards, I unplugged them from the audio jack and just enjoyed the silence. It really made my flight a lot nicer and I was able to sleep more than I usually do. If you've looked at other reviews and tests of the QC20s, you'll see that they're particularly effective at the frequencies associated with airplane engines. Those reviews are very accurate! Again, another environment where I didn't realize how annoying the background noise was until I took it away. Also good for crying babies, so long as it's not directly next to you. Voices sound far away with these on. You can still hear it, but it's so much quieter. As far as battery life goes, I've never had mine run out of power, even on my long haul flights. I just charge them before I go and everything's fine. They're not even blinking at my by the end of the flight. Oh, and the sound quality when listening to audio is quiet nice. They work with or without power, but the acoustic cancellation with the internal amp really helps you hear whatever you're actually listening to clearly and correctly. I've also used these with my phone and they did a wonderful job. No one on the call could hear the noise of my car. If you do use them for phone calls while driving, I suggest using just one headphone though. The noise cancellation can be dangerous in a car - you won't hear sirens and things you need to hear.

I ordered these earphones to help minimize office noise, and used them to tie into my desktop computer system. The first week the noise cancellation worked fairly well, and the office chatter going on around me was cut by about 50 percent. The second week of use I could hear the click when engaging the noise cancellation, but it seemed like the noises were not cancelled, but rather they seemed like they were somewhat amplified. The design of the earbuds and cords themselves could use a little improvement. I noticed a couple of other reviews that indicated they didn't fit inside the ear canals of some of the users very well. I had the same problem. My $10.00 Panasonic ear buds fit nicely, but the Quietcomfort 20 earbuds didn't fit well with any of the 3 sizes of included attachments. Another issue that I noticed is that the plastic volume button where the two cords connect to a single cord didn't have any strain reliefs. The cords coming out of the buds have strain reliefs, and the cord going into and out of the noise cancelling on/off switch box have strain reliefs, but not the areas going into and out of the volume control area. I probably wouldn't have thought twice about this, but the reason my older Bose non-noise cancelling earbuds needed to be replaced was due to no strain reliefs coming out of the buds. Why not include them on all areas where the cords enter a piece of plastic on a $249.99 product? After a bit of use, I also didn't like the fact that the USB charge cord was only about 12.5 inches long. I have a USB plug in on the side of my computer monitor. The cord was barely long enough to reach the charge port on the On/Off box. This cable is way too short for anyone wanting to plug into an outlet adapter or a CPU, and then route the cable to a nearby table without the On/Off box dangling. Even adding 6-8 inches of cable would help. Speaking of cable length, another annoyance is that the plug-in end of On/Off box only has about 3 to 4 inches of wire coming out of it. Unless you have the perfect scenario, the weight of the On/Off box is likely going to hang from the plug in, rather than resting on the desk surface. This could have been easily fixed by adding another 4-6 inches of wire, or moving the box up the wire another 4-6 inches. The 3-4 inches of wire and plug-in aren't very robust, so I doubt the wire and plug would last long after hanging in various positions. Because of this issue with the noise cancellation not working properly, and the small design issues, I ended up returning my earbuds. I understand that defects can happen with any and all brands, but the design issues should have been easily identified by anyone testing the product for a period of time in different scenarios. At $249.99 I'd like to not only get good noise cancelling technology, but I want the materials to last, and the design to be well thought out.
