  • Bonsai Basics: No Complications, No Guesswork: The Step-by-Step Guide to The Ancient Asian Art
Format: Kindle
Bonsai Basics: No Complications, No Guesswork: The Step-by-Step Guide to The Ancient Asian Art of Transforming Miniature Trees into Living Masterpieces by John Willard This book start out with introductory material and what to expect from the book. There are myths that it will cost too much or be so expensive you can't take care of it, time consuming, etc but they are all wrong. Love how they tell you to get started and how to pick out an easy tree to grow yourself at home. There are so many varieties and the options they come with will explain how to tend to them and if they are for beginners. Book follows the whole life of the tree in how to care for it, so don't think you need yet another book. References are included. Great book! ... show more

  • This book is the resource for bonsai! I was overwhelmed of the amount of knowledge and advice given.
Format: Kindle
This book is jam packed with a ton of information about the art of bonsai. The author provides a very complete look at the art of bonsai and then proceeds with a very comprehensive, step-by-step guide into everything that makes bonsai the art it is. With easy to understand and follow directions everything is covered from picking your first tree, caring for it, seeing the design the tree is meant to be, cutting, wiring, making a connection, it's presentation space, and so much more. I never realized the depth to which goes behind creating the bonsai tree. From the seasons to types of trees to repotting it, every bit of knowledge is poured out onto these pages. Each chapter is designed with a breakdown of what you will study, that information in step-by-step indepth form, a review of the steps you took for that chapter, and various facts to broaden your knowledge of bonsai. Illustrated with flowcharts, QR codes for further info, action plan, kits, and so many other guides to help support you on the way. I love that it's more than just cutting trees. You are encouraged to make a connection with your tree by taking the time to quiet yourself and really look at what your tree is telling you. Much like the Japanese culture you are quieting your mind and seeing what the tree and its energy is telling you. This book shows you the "michi" or the path of the bonsai. I can't wait to see what michi my bonsai wants to show me ... show more

  • Bonsai Trees!
Format: Kindle
I really did not know there were so many Bonsai trees. This was interesting to know the angles of the trees, natural inspiration, key features and visual appeal. I enjoyed reading Bonsai Basic. Learning about how to take care of Bonsai trees. Learning the meaning of the trees, weight balance, how to clean the trees. Learning the contrast, composition, clarity and consistency of the trees. This was a fascinating book to read. There is so much information in the book about Bonsai trees. Recommended read if you are into the Bonsai trees. ... show more

  • Great resource on many levels.
Format: Kindle
There is a lot of information packed into this book which starts with a broad scope look at the art and then zooms in for a very thorough step by step explanation of the art. It covers all aspects from tree selection through growth and care to presentation in an easily understood and workable manner. Included are very useful video links for visuals. I especially appreciate the attention to observation and response to the tree’s patterns and needs. A wonderful book both for beginners and for those interested in a deeper appreciation of the art. I have both the hard copy and the digital form. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Like having a pet
Format: Kindle
This book is aimed at someone like me, just starting out with bonsai. It focuses on simplifying bonsai care, zeroing in on the 20% of tasks that produce 80% of the results. Each chapter has specific steps to build your skills within one month, starting from selecting the style of the tree you like to learning styling techniques and display options. The book includes some images, but I was disappointed that the images were black and white and did not show the vibrancy of boisai trees. The verbal descriptions, however, were very good. They’re concise, clear, and organized into sections covering key aspects of care. I also appreciated the “pro-tips”, the short, insightful nuggets about different parts of bonsai care that added depth. A bonsai tree is like a pet because it needs lots of care to thrive. You water it, trim its branches, and tend to it carefully, just like feeding and grooming a pet. In return, it rewards you with its beautiful, tidy look, growing vibrant and healthy because of the attention you give it. ... show more

  • Review of Bonsai Basics by John Willard
Format: Kindle
Like his previous book (about wilderness survival for kids), Bonsai Basics has a well organized and friendly style. With step by step directions for a beginner to delve into the ancient art of Bonsai. It not only is very clear about how to proceed, but emphasizes a worry-free, calm approach. I especially like how the need to see the tree freshly is such an important part of Bonsai – Mr. Willard invites the reader to take the necessary time for seeing, even listening to and feeling, the tree. Like with his previous book, there are case studies and links to videos about Bonsai, as well as practical tips and interesting asides, that also will help the reader. I highly recommend this book ... show more

If you’ve ever looked at a bonsai tree and thought, “Wow, I could totally do that!”—only to immediately kill a succulent—then Bonsai Basics: No Complications, No Guesswork is the leafy lifesaver you didn’t know you needed. This delightfully down-to-earth guide gently holds your pruning shears and whispers, “You got this,” as it walks you through bonsai without making you feel like you need a PhD in tree whispering. With a mix of ancient wisdom and modern convenience (QR codes! Who knew enlightenment could be scanned?), it teaches you how to keep your miniature forest friends alive and spiritually fulfilled. ... show more
