Good beginner read. Gives just the right amount of knowledge in each aspect, with a lot of great extras. History, types, similar takes from other cultures. I did not know that bonsai was derived from a different style which isn't even from Japan.

    • For traditional bonsai trees only
I got a Dwarf Jade bonsai, knowing absolutely nothing about it. I thought that I could learn how to take care of it from a book about bonsai. I followed the advice. The tree died. In trying to figure out where I went wrong, and if I had a defective tree in the first place, I started researching my tree's species. It turns out that you care for a traditional bonsai tree (typically native the northern North Hemisphere) much differently than a tree native to a warmer climate. While acknowledging that non-traditional trees can be made into bonsai, as this book does, all of the advice is aimed at traditional trees. I had killed my tree because I didn't understand how to take care of it, as it is native to Africa, and this book (among many others) does not address the needs of non-traditional trees. I would suggest that you find the Latin Botanical name of your intended bonsai tree and do a little research first, so you know what advice about bonsai applies to your tree (some advice applies to all) and what does not. ... show more
