    • Good intro to what it takes to manage a backyard greenhouse, but it’s not a how-to book

I’ve been thinking about getting a greenhouse for a long time, but have been worried about how to get started. I got this book to learn more about how it works: how to plan out the location, decide what to grow, manage the temperature and air flow, and what to do about watering and pest control. This book covers all those topics and several more, including a very helpful troubleshooting guide near the end. However, on almost all topics, the book provides explanations around the concepts but not a lot of actionable instructions. It’s great for understanding what needs to be done, and less so on how exactly to do it. There are no pictures, no diagrams, no illustrations at all, so you can’t “see” what it’s talking about when it describes things. For that reason, I would not call this a beginners’ book since it doesn’t show you what to do. For instance, the instructions for building a DIY greenhouse structure are light on details, and there are no diagrams, so if you’re building your own and need measurements and images, I’d recommend getting a different book. The book i great for learning what’s involved, but you’d need to get a different book for detailed instructions. If you just want to know how it works, and maybe get some ideas if you’re crafty and don’t need instructions, it’s a good book. ... show more

This book may be suitable for beginners, but without photos, drawings, or visual elements, it lacks significant value. The subject is explored in a general way with minimal detail. This does involve construction work, which requires detail, and gardening requires extensive detail.

I can't recommend this book. I'm on page 10 and so far I have noted so many poorly written sentences that I'm completely distracted and unable to focus on what the author is trying to convey. It's obvious no one has edited this book. I'm not questioning the author's expertise in greenhouse gardening but I have spent considerable time wondering if he is a native English speaker. As a disclaimer, I am not a professional editor but I have earned my Master's degree in education and am somewhat familiar with standard American English. Don't waste your money. ... show more

    • Succession Growing Was a Game Changer
Format: Paperback
Greenhouse Gardening for Beginners is a clear and helpful guide for anyone who wants to grow food year round. I am fairly new to gardening and wanted something that would not overwhelm me with technical terms. It makes greenhouse gardening feel possible even if you don't have much experience. What I liked most is how it explains things in plain language. It covers planning, building, budgeting, and even troubleshooting in a way that is easy to follow. After finishing it, I feel much more confident about setting up a greenhouse and keeping it going through the seasons. My favorite part was the section on succession growing. It shows how to plant in waves so your greenhouse keeps producing all year. You swap cool weather crops for warm weather ones and start the next seedlings before the last harvest is done. That made me realize I could grow a lot more food without needing extra space. Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who wants to enjoy fresh produce at home, save money at the store, or just get more out of gardening.     • Good Info But Presentation Could Use Polishing

While I did find that the book had some good information in it, I have some mixed feelings on it overall. At times I felt like I was reading two different books. About the first third of it felt a bit chaotic? Unorganized? I just didn't find it to flow very well. There were also instructions for constructing greenhouses, but it would have been much easier to convey the message through pictures/illustrations or even to incorporate some lists or steps instead of putting everything in paragraph form. Another part I remember reading and thinking "this would be so much easier to see in a table to get the point across". So again, there's good info here, I just think it could have been presented better and in a more organized or beginner friendly way - especially since it's marketed as "for beginners". ... show more
