    • Sweet (and sometimes Salty) Story of a Hero Dog and his Opening to Understanding The World
This one's a really sweet fil that, on the surface, is basically a fast-paced adventure about a super dog and his adventures out in the real world. But it's a lot more than that, too. It serves as a surprisingly touching story of identity, friendship, and going for what really matters in life. At its core, BOLT is about a young girl and her loyal dog (both actors). She knows she's an actor, but poor Bolt seems to really believe he’s a superhero because that’s all he’s ever known. He barks and things blow up, etc. But as the story unfolds, Bolt and we in the audience get to see there’s so much more than saving the world or chasing fame and fortune. Clearly, it's a morality tale (for children as well as adults) reminding us that having a safe, loving home and friends (human or animal who care about us is THE ULTIMATE prize in life!. I like that the film, ironically, also takes on the entertainment industry, subtly (and sometimes not-so-subtly) highlighting exploitation of animals and child actors. And it very pointedly reminds us that agents and execs will almost always prioritize profit over people. They definitely don't come out looking good! All in all, this is a cool animated film. Good story line, sufficient action and sufficient heart-felt emotion... that it serves very well in that sweet space between social commentary and a family-friendly presentation that works!     • Heart Warming!
While the plot was predictable, the way it was carried out was great. It was such a good movie that the predictable plot could be overlooked and made almost refreshing. The dog reminded me of my dog and the cat reminded me of my cat and the hampster reminded me of my guinea pig. The bonds between them all and the girl just sum up how I feel about a dog's loyalty and cat's personality and the feisty little rodent sidekick. :) As other reviewers have said, the animation and effects/characters/CG is the best Disney CG so far (not counting Pixar/Disney CG in this). They perfected the characteristics and traits of real animals in the animation of the animals, but also was able to personify the animals as well. This is one of John Travolta's best work I think - he did such a good job as the voice of Bolt that I didn't even realize it was him (which when you don't realize an actor is that actor, I think that means they did a fantastic job). I loved the duet between Bolt (Travolta) and Penny (Miley Cyrus) and the little 2-D animation for the end credits - there are just so many things about this movie that I loved - it was all the details and small things they did to make it realistic. It was believable and cute and sweet and heart-wrenching and touching. Maybe it's because I love animals and all the animals in this movie reminded me of mine or others I have met, but I was pleasantly surprised and endeared by this movie when I wasn't expecting much of anything out of Disney (CG) movies anymore. My only regret with this movie was I got to see an early plot/story outline and artwork for the movie back when it was in preproduction (Disney came and did a presentation at my college on the movies they were making and this was one of them), and it seemed so much more original. The cat was supposed to be a mechanic with an eyepatch, and Bolt was a TV star, but more of a pampered one and the film was at that time titled "American Dog" and it was more about Bolt becoming his own person rather than just the "movie star." He was still on a cross-country journey out to rescue his owner (Penny) but there seemed to be more originality to the story and characters. Overall, this film turned out really well, but I just wonder what it COULD have been had it been more original and not so cookie-cutter. The artist that designed and created Lilo and Stitch was also the one to come up with the original story/character designs and while the animals look really similar to how they did in preproduction, I would have liked to have seen his ideas be the ones they used for the final version. I think the area that has the most impact in this movie is its emotional content. If you love your pets (dogs especially) and know that they will do anything for you, then you will also like this movie. If all you care about is a surprising new story idea, then you probably won't like it. P.S. The pigeons' animation (and probably their accents) nailed it. ... show more

    • The best Disney animated movie since Lilo & Stitch
Not to knock on some other animated movies that have come out since Lilo & Stitch, but I believe that this is the best Disney animated movie to be released since Lilo & Stitch. Hannah Montana fans will be happy that Miley Cyrus, has a voice in this movie, but how about the rest of us? What Bolt does lack, is orginal. Films have been seen like this, where a dog gets lost. But of course you will want to know if the movie is worth your time, and my opinion it is, while somebody else's opinions it is not, so you will have to decide for yourself. The movie begins with a young Penny (Chloe Moretz) goes to a pet shop and buys a dog. And she names him Bolt, then the movie jumps to 5 years later, where Penny (Miley Cyrus) and Bolt (John Travolta) are on a set of a TV show filming an epsiode, in which her TV dad (Sean Donnellan) is kidnapped by the TV show's villian Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell), and she has to go to rescue him. When filming ends, Penny takes Bolt back to his trailer, he never leaves the set, and some of the people with the show, including the director (James Lipton) wants the show to be real to Bolt, and he worries while looking at film, discovers a boom mike on film. While a woman named Mindy (Kari Wahlgren) from the network doesn't care about the boom mike, and is more worried about the ratings for the show. Meanwhile Penny decides that she wants to take Bolt home for the weekend, and she apporaches her own Mom (Grey Delisle) with the idea, but her agent (Greg Germann) is against the idea. So after filming of the next episode, in which Penny gets kidnapped on the show, Bolt who doesn't know that she is really alright, is so worried sick. And when his door on top of the trailer is opened, he manges to get out to find her, with leads him to be accidently packed in a box with styrofoam peanuts. And he ends up in New York City, a long way from Hollywood, where the show is filmed. He meets up with a couple of clueless piegons, that knows that he looks familar, but can't figure where or why he looks familar. Then he meets up with Mittens (Susie Essman) a felmale alley cat, that he assumes to be apart of Penny's disappearance, and also assumes that she works for the villain of the show, that he doesn't know by name, but only as the green eyed man. And when she sees on his name tag, that says Hollywood, she shows him a map, that they are in New York, and he has to get to Hollywood, or right by a waffle on the map. And he forces her to take the trip with him. Along the way, they meet up with a hampster named Rino (Mark Walton) who watches TV, and is a huge fan of Bolt, and the first one to actually regonize him, and know him by name. I am going to leave you to see the movie to see what will happen, and if Bolt and Penny will be reunited. But if you like a lot of their animated movies, then I will see that you should love Bolt, and I can't remember too many animated movies even from Disney to use the word awesome like this movie. ... show more

    • Charming and Delightful for the Entire Family
I've now seen Bolt twice, once in 2D and now in 3D; both times we found the movie to be a heartwarming adventure that focuses on the triumph of good over evil and the great importance of friends and faithful love. The movie is really fun to watch and picks up the viewers and carries them along for a fast paced adventure across the entire United States. The sound and picture are both excellent and the 3D version is very effective. The 3D version is presently only available through Sony for purchasers of a Sony 3D TV. That is similar to the Panasonic program which offers Avatar in 3D to purchasers of a Panasonic 3D TV. I suspect they will both be available for general purchase within a year or so. The story is of a girl and her dog that just happens to hit the big time in Hollywood as stars of an adventure series, but are then separated by an unfortunate set of circumstances. The story follows the adventures of the dog, Bolt, who is devoted to his beloved girl and determined to find her again. Bolt's life is complicated by one awkward misconception; he has come to believe that the special effects wonders he performs on stage are all real; he believes he can really do all of those miraculous things he appears to do courtesy of the special effects and stage props. During his journey home he encounters all sorts of adventures which teach him the reality of his personal strengths and weaknesses and the value of friendship. The movie is remarkable in its clear cut presentation of high moral and ethical principles; I definitely recommend it as a first-rate movie for all of the family! ... show more

    • Great, very funny movie, once you get thru the first 11 minutes.
Once you get thru the first 11 minutes, this movie just gets better and better and funnier and funnier. Clearly the first 11 minutes (actually the first 2 minutes are fine but the next 9 are torture! (at least for a middle aged woman)) were meant for the 3D movie screen.....nothing but action, that must have looked impressive in 3D. But I never saw it in 3D. No matter......once Bolt meets Mittens, and then Rhino, this movie becomes quite hilarious. Even the pigeons are a riot! I highly recommend this funny, funny movie. It's one of the funniest animated movies ever made. Please note, the description "two-disc deluxe edition + digital copy" is misleading. It is just 1 disc plus the digital copy. But there are lots of special features on the 1 disc. ... show more

    • Awesome says Daphne the American Eskimo
My dog (Daphne, American Eskimo, Eskie) believe it or not loves to watch TV especially when there are dogs and cats in a movie or on television program. She jumps on our bed and has her eyes glued to the tube. Well, we both watched Bolt and we were so glad we purchased this movie. We didn't want to pause it and run to the kitchen for a snack as we were so involved in this cute movie. I liked it that they had John Travolta as Bolts voice over. Mylie Cyrus they could have left out of the movie and someone else to do Penny the little girl. Not a Mylie Cyrus lover what so ever as she does not have a good reputation. But what I liked about the movie was how Penny showed a great concern for her little dog. Now, in the movie it is said that Bolt really wasn't her dog, but Daphne and I failed to believe this. Penny really loves that little dog. It's a good movie for kids and even pets. The movie shows how much love a pet can bring to all of us and how a child can learn to care for their pet. Penny never gives up on finding Bolt. Anyway, Daphne gives this movie a 4 paws up. You will have to see this movie. I can see why it has such high rating and it well deserves those high ratings. ... show more

    • One of the best Disney movies you probably haven't seen
Bolt is a heartwarming tale from Disney about a sheltered movie star dog learning the ups and downs of reality after a mishap puts him across the country with no easy way home. One of the earlier hits of the Disney Animation Studios, Bolt has the look and feel of the better-known Pixar Studios films. However, it proves once again that DAS has the chops to compete with the likes of Pixar. When Pixar lost it's edge and was only making sequels, DAS was creating movies like this. In the years that followed, only a couple of Pixar movies have grabbed me, but every DAS release is a winner. Bolt is animated in a beautiful 'water-color' background look and is a sight to behold. It's not as beautiful as say, 'The Good Dinosaur', but it holds it's own. All of the characters are well-developed, and range from hilarious (Rhino the hamster) to despicable (Penny's agent guy) to a character that you hate at first to one you learn to love (Mittens). There is lots of action in this movie, befitting of the action-hero roles that Bolt and Penny play. My entire family LOVES this movie, and we rewatch it all the time. It has lots to keep little ones and grownups alike completely entertained. It is one of the best 'hidden gems' from DAS, and certainly worthy of your collection. ... show more

    • Great Movie - Pay Attention to Region Codes
This is one of very few reviews on the 3D version of this movie. I have Bolt in 2D Blu-Ray. When I saw it available in 3D, I jumped at it. And I fell in love with this movie all over again. This is a great movie for the 3D format. It is really done well, and with all the special effects, it's well worth it. But be careful reading the region code notice. The 3D disc (the movie) in this set is unlocked for regions A,B, and C. In other words, it WILL play anywhere. I'm in the USA and had no problem. However, the Special Features disk is on the 2D Region Code B disk. That disk can only play in region B players. That's in Europe. It will not play on Blu-Ray players in the USA. That's no big deal if you already own the region A (USA) Blu-Ray 2D version of the movie, because the special features are the same on both the 2D and 3D sets. Just be aware of the Region Code B restriction on the Special Features disk in this set. PS...The Special Features and 2D version of the movie are both on the same disk. I would have still bought this 3D set even if it had NO special features. 3D movies are still in short supply, and hard to come by. No telling when (or even if) Disney will decide to market this movie in the USA any time soon. In the mean time, this is the only way to see Bolt in 3D, and it is well worth it! ... show more
