  • Haven't read a page of it, but looks solid on my office book shelf
Earn instant street cred with this book on your office shelf. People walk in and think, "Man, this guy must really know his stuff! He's got Blue Ocean Strategy on his shelf, and must have read it cover to cover, because why else would someone put this legendary sales book on their shelf at work?!?!" Get ready for that big promotion kemosabe! ... show more

  • Blue Ocean Strategy can introduce transformation in many ways
Very insightful content with the best takeaway for me being the strategy of making the competition irrelevant. Not to ignore the competition but to understand the consumers who hire a product or service to solve a problem and differentiate your product or service to avoid commoditization. There are tools to help hypothesize how your company's competencies of understanding new technologies, new materials, new channels for reaching consumers, etc. are more simply, more efficiently, less expensively changing the way consumers end-use a product or service to the extent that it expands the market to non-consumers. Much like Apple did when it introduced PC's into the home and how Amazon is leveraging the Internet as a way of changing how consumers buy products around the world. As I read the book I would put it down often just to think about how I could use what I was learning and apply it in the classroom. This is a good read whether you are a businessman, a doctor, a teacher, a volunteer or involved in any other discipline. ... show more

  • In Pursuit of Blue Oceans on Dead Seas
The expanded edition of Blue Ocean Strategy, is metaphorical, witty, and almost Biblical in its commentary of the bloody waters of competitive Red Ocean market forces . I wish I could say my own pursuit of enlightenment led me to Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne’s masterpiece on embracing and leveraging difference. Instead, I was referred to it by a young intrapreneur. Based on what we were attempting to achieve in entrepreneurship in our community, he strongly recommended that I read it. I recently ordered the book and could not put it down. The stories were compelling -- both the winners and losers. While most of the expanded edition builds on the original work, the final chapters dispel misconceptions and explore the mis-steps and mistakes of early Blue Ocean strategy disciples. As I read, I reflected on the work of developing entrepreneurial ventures in barren and sometimes depressed sub-economies in under-served communities. I reflected on the range of talent, resourcefulness, and perseverance in these communities. Why, then, don’t they have more “Blue Oceans” of uncontested market space? Or is it that our minds and souls are so numb that, as in the book’s Circus del Sol case study illustrates, we can’t envision the extra-ordinary? Are we living in self-imposed exile in a proverbial Dead Sea while the Blue Ocean waves are licking at our feet? Just ordered the new book released in September and anxiously waiting to read and compare the books. ... show more

  • How to Run your Business and Become the Competition
This is a very technical book to read cover to cover, which explains the 3 star rating. However the message is clear. If you run your business attempting to price your product or device below the competition or by adding "bells and whistles" to an existing product, you will continually be looking over your shoulder to fend off your competitors. The book includes several excellent examples of companies that used the existing product or service but found a way to market these to previously untapped markets creating a space in the marketplace and become the leader in that space. ... show more

  • Must-read.
I picked up this book on a recommendation, expecting it to be rather eye-opening. The best thing: it is! It provides a well-heeled approach to a different way of thinking about your business. And, as I said in the title of my review, it earns a spot on a “must read” list of books on business. I am contemplating buying several of these and gifting them to all the managers and partners we work with, because it is just that good. Even if it does get somewhat technical on occasion, this is a great strategy book to acquaint yourself with. Even if you are already an innovator and visionary - there is plenty of information within, which will help you break out of the confines of the “tried and true”. At the very least, it will stimulate your creative juices and give you an approach to systemizing innovation within any industry. It is just that good. Perhaps, it is THE best book on economics and business I’ve ever read... ... show more

  • A different way of thinking
This is a classic book that will survive many generations. This strategy challenges conventional thought but isn't some random idea. There are case studies, larger analysis, etc that culminated on this rigorous and interesting book. I'm glad I didn't settle for watching a YouTube video about what the blue ocean strategy is and instead delved into this book which was packed with practical advice. If I may be critical, I wish the government and nonprofit examples were replaced with business examples. There was a lot of time devoted to policing, fundraising, etc. that while it proved the point would have been much more useful to the typical business person reading this book if they were all for profit case studies. ... show more

  • Fantastic book, one of the best I've ever read on business
One of the best business books I've ever read. Such good practical advice in this book, I almost want to trash it to keep the competition from reading it ;) What this book does best is give you a formula to think about things you may not have considered in your drive to compete with other companies in your space. The sign of a good book is one in which stands up to the test of time. I read this book and it felt like it could have been written yesterday. I got halfway through and decided to check the publication date. I was shocked to find out how many years ago it was written. The only thing that gives away its age are the examples it uses. However, I think that adds to the value because we all know what eventually happened with those companies and in many cases they failed because they got away from the principles in this book. ... show more
