    • Great value for the money
Warning: Novella review incoming. TL;DR: Pros: Screen is amazing in color and clarity, solid construction, battery life is great, it has a headphone jack Neutral: a little underpowered (at least for my needs), cameras could be better Cons: Charging port is a little finicky, touch screen has intermittent issues with responsiveness Overview: I bought this because I broke the screen on my Axon 7 and needed a quick, cheap replacement. Looking around at the options, this seemed to be the best bang for the buck, and being curious about Blu phones for years, I went for it. Now that I've had it for several months, I feel I can review it fairly. Lets start with the bad. From the day I got this phone, I've had issues with the charging cable staying in the port. I don't know if it's my particular handset, or a systemic issue, but I have to be very gentle with it once it's plugged in, least the slightest jostle pops the cord out. It's not limited to a particular cord either. Luckily, once it's plugged in, the phone has no issues charging or transferring data, so it's a rather minor issue to me, but it does tarnish the overall appeal of the G9 Pro. The only other issue I've really had with this phone is intermittent touch response issues. At times I'll unlock my phone via the fingerprint scanner and when I do the screen lock up and goes unresponsive. The phone itself is fine, as apps keep running and all the other controls keep working, it just doesn't register my touch. If I lock the screen again and unlock it via pass-code, that'll clear up the issue, but it can take a time or three to do it. Frustrating, but I'm not sure if that's a hardware or Blu software/firmware issue, or a third party issue so I can't fully blame Blu. The phone is still perfectly usable however, so it's more an annoyance than anything else. Edit 4/2/20: I believe I've finally figured out the culprit for the screen issue. After running a few experiments, it seems that the problem stems from a lack of available RAM on the device. I noticed that the screen would sometimes go unresponsive when available RAM dropped below 1.75 Gigs, and was even more frequent when available RAM was around 1.5 Gigs. After uninstalling several apps and force stopping quite a few others, the problem seems to have largely been resolved. I'm still going to count this as a con, because the device should still run fine with that amount of RAM free, but at least I know what's going on. Keep this in mind if you plan on running quite a few apps on your phone. The neutral: The phone is under powered for my needs. As I said, this was a quick replacement for my Axon 7. Don't get me wrong, it's a great phone... for what it is. That might seem like a bit of a back-handed compliment, and perhaps it is, but let's be honest, it's not going to take on the S10's, IPhone 11's, and such of the world. While the Axon 7 wasn't quite that high end even back when it was new, it still is leagues ahead of the G9 Pro in terms of raw specs and power. I understood that when I bought the phone, that this was in almost all regards a downgrade. I'm not a power-user though, and I figured I could get away with the lower specs. It works, but the lower specs are more noticeable than I was anticipating. In good conscience, I can't blame Blu for that though. Taken for what it actually is, not what I hoped it would be, it's a decent phone. If you need a smartphone to get you through the day and only use it intermittently, it should work fine for you. If you're expecting it to go up against even mid-tier flagships from a year ago, or even just have staying power for more than a year or two, you might want to look elsewhere though. The other point to note is the cameras. While on paper this thing should be a beast in the photography department, it's markedly worse than my Axon in terms of quality. For someone like myself who rarely uses my phone for photography or video recording, it's passable. I assume most of my issues are with Blu's processing software, so using a third party app might make things better, but I've never been bothered enough to try. I still think it's worth a mention however. Now onto the pros of this phone. For starters, the screen is amazing. Point blank. I went from a 1440p AMOLED screen on my Axon 7 to a 1080p IPS (I would guess, I know it's not OLED though), and the difference doesn't even bother me. What should be a stark, and quite frankly disgusting, change has been met with indifference. The colors are vibrant, the images crisp, and brightness adjusts to most any need or preference. If Blu only got a single thing correct with this phone, the screen has to be it. However, they did more right as well with the battery. At 4000mAh, it usually lasts me two full days before needing a charge, and with the fast charger, I can get a 50% charge stupid fast. I've never properly timed it, but it's less than an hour and I'm good to go. Construction is also on point. It's a solidly built phone, and it's take a few tumbles in the time I've had it without cracking or breaking. Even the looks are nice. I've actually had several people ask if it was a Galaxy Note. I'll round this off with a seemingly minor pro: IT HAS A HEADPHONE JACK! Seriously though, so many high-end manufacturers going away from having a dedicated port. As someone who's been getting into audiophile gear the last several years, (read: I have headphones almost as expensive at high end flagship phones) it's refreshing to be able to plug my nice headphones in and listen, and the audio quality is surprisingly good as well. To wrap this up, I want to state that this phone is good for what it is. It has its quirks and its compromises, but at $200, what phone doesn't?     • Impressive performance
I recently received a 3 month service promo from Mint Mobile and needed an unlocked phone. Figured I’d have a back up line for a few months, while getting to experience Android 9. The build quality is actually really great. The hologram back is interesting, and not something that looks cheesy. I was also surprised to see a clear case and screen protector included in the box. My phone also had a screen protector already installed. The SIM card tray can hold two SIM cards, and the tray also holds the MicroSD card. Thankfully, the SIM card I had fit perfectly, and was immediately recognized upon power up. The most I had to do was confirm the carrier selection. It was also already fully updated, so there weren’t any updates to install when I finished setup. The setup was quick and easy. There isn’t a lot of bloatware installed (thank you BLU), and it feels a bit more stock than I was expecting. The Fingerprint scanner on the back immediately recognizes my finger, and yes you can add more than one finger to unlock. The only thing missing, is NFC. This means you can’t use it for mobile payments at your favorite store. I’ve also seen some reviews talk about the wireless charging, and it not appearing to charge. I realized fairly quickly that it would take 5 seconds (exactly) before the charging animation to prompt. This was replicated fairly easy, with the charging area being in the center. Using three different chargers, it began charging 5 seconds after it was on the wireless charger. It charges fairly quickly wirelessly, but is super fast using the USB C cable and Power Adapter. It’s also nice to have 128 gb of storage. I do some video editing, and the extra storage means I can sync my online cloud storage files for review as I travel. The large bright screen makes video viewing enjoyable. It’s not as great as an OLED screen, but it offers a pretty great vivid picture. There are some color setting you can change in settings to make the picture more cool or warmer; your preference. Cell service has been pretty great, and I have yet to find a dead spot with Mint (T-Mobile's network). I’m getting full 4G LTE data and voice quality is clear. People I’ve spoken with on the phone can hear me, but I did notice there doesn’t appear to be a way to enable WiFi Calling and Text on the phone. The service provider offers it, but there isn’t a setting to be found to enable it. I’m not sure if that’s the case for everyone, but I have yet to figure out a way to enable it. With 4GB of RAM, I have yet to run into any app slowdown or lag issues. Streaming apps are very clear and will play 1080p with ease. WiFi performance is great on my eero network over 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz. Over 5 Ghz, I’m getting about 430 Mbps internal network speeds. With my ISP speed at 300 Mbps, I’m getting around 230 Mbps in speed tests on 5 Ghz and around 140 to 180 Mbps on 2.4 Ghz. Websites load quickly on every browser (FireFox was a bit quicker in my tests), and downloads are quick. Moving between apps is pretty much seamless, with no slow down. Was also happy to see it supported IPv6. The phone also prompted to format the installed MicroSD card upon power up, and also allowed me to add it as additional system storage, or external portable storage. I’m not sure I’ll run out of space anytime soon, after adding another 32 GB. In terms of audio, the small speaker is loud, but I wish there was stereo. However, for those who still use it, this does include a headphone jack, and it does come with some basic headphones. Audio quality over Bluetooth is pretty great, and the phone paired quickly to my Sony Wireless headphones. The battery life is surprisingly great. During light use like checking emails, sending a few text messages, and the occasional social media check, I still had 95% at the end of the day. During my heavier use, the battery was still at around 60% at the end of the day. Even leaving the phone off the charger overnight only saw the battery discharge maybe 4%. For those of you that play a lot of mobile games, this won’t play fortnite without some sort of workaround (you can Google it). The Epic Games app will state it’s not compatible. I’m not sure if that’s a deal breaker for you. Otherwise, it installed other games and played fairly well. I’m sure there are other phones that play a bit better, but it played most everything else I threw at it, including PUBG on Medium settings. The camera is fairly good quality, but I wouldn’t say it blows away the likes of a current gen Pixel, Galaxy S, or an iPhone. However, it does offer a few really great modes, and the ultra wide lens is pretty great. Don’t expect great quality in low light, but with some decent lighting you’ll capture some great shots. The “108 MP” mode seems gimmicky, but it still takes a decent shot! Overall, I’m really impressed with the BLU G9 Pro. The performance you get for $200 is pretty great when compared to some that are 2 to 3 times the price. The lack of NFC for mobile payments should be considered if that’s something you’re looking for, and is the only reason I gave this 4 stars. ... show more
