For the price, this unit did a very nice job. My two quibbles are that 1) it's hard to see the alignment marker to align it with the mark on the wood, and 2) that the hole center wasn't exactly aligned with the mark - it looked to be off by a millimeter or so - but as long as you drill both pieces with the jig in the same orientation, that doesn't matter very much.

I had to make a scarf joint with a long 2x6 in my storage shed so I could hang a ladder. That means I had to drill 3 holes very straight to secure them together with 3/8 diameter bolts. It is very difficult to drill perfectly straight for this. This product is perfect for that. The maker of this product should advertise it is also great for drilling holes for scarf joints too, not just for dowels. Very solid construction and easy to use.

Update: the company reached out to me about my interest in a replacement. I told them I would try it. The replacement worked nearly flawlessly. Dowels go in placed properly. If I had an improvement to suggest it would be the alignment markers need to be more visible and placed where you can easily match them to the markings on the board. Bought this to help speed up a project. I decided to test it out on a smaller project first. When I joined the 2 boards they ended up twisted. Tried again with the same results. So I drew a centerline down a straight board and it seems that the center scribe marks on the jig would find themselves on opposite sides of that line. It would be fine to mark and use the jig on one board then flip it for use on the other board. but if you are nearing then of the board you already have to flip the jig for stable clamping which now sets the dowels out of alignment.

The device came needing adjustment for center, but adjustment videos can be found on Internet. It still has some slight movement when in use, so you have to be careful that there is no tension on the center piece when using. Generally, for the price and typical use it works fine though.
