    • Soft wax pencils with vibrant colors.
The Black Widow brand (in 2022) is composed only of soft wax pencils. It has a total of 180 colors divided into the seven sets. The latest set is the Dragon which stresses darker & more vibrant colors. The Monarchs stressed pastels. The first five sets have a short color dip while the last two have a longer color dip. Do not confuse soft wax cores with the soft oil cores found in so many of the cheaper but popular Chinese pencils. Oil and wax are very different cores. Wax is the easiest to learn. Just pick up & apply to paper. Don’t expect the two pencils to act the same. One is transparent & the other is opaque so different techniques work for the different pencils (don’t claim your Chinese oil pencil is just like a wax Prismacolor because, of course, they are not). You don’t need to burnish wax pencils as you do oil. No need to lay down layer after light layer of oil pencil: wax is opaque so you color quickly. Wax is easy on aching hand joints too because the cores are not hard. I’m just learning oil pencil now but wax is my favorite of the two & of the two wax brands I own, Black Widow is my favorite. The cores do not break like Prismacolor Premiers do. They are soft but not too soft. I love the Dragons. This is a great set for colorists who do a lot of landscapes. It has six medium to dark greens plus a few blue green. Also four browns, a gold (called cardboard), some berrylicious deep reds & a few unusual blue shades filled out with yellows, oranges, pinks etc. A bit of something for everyone. It’s a great companion to the Monarch set & the two will give you most of what you need to get started in coloring. Once you know your way around the wax pencils, then you can try the oil and watercolors. Ink pencils (Inktense) are my next type to try. You can’t go wrong with Black Widow! ... show more

I love these pencils! They came in this beautiful tin and were wrapped in plastic wrap to protect them from moving around and possible breakage. The colors are so vibrant and pigment is outstanding. They blend beautifully and I can even use them with my other pencils. Another thing I love about them is the black wood they are cased in and the unique and fun color names like “bruise “, “sundown” and “serpent “. This is my second set and I plan on buying the rest of the sets in the future. ... show more

    • Beautiful colors and lovely laydown
I am a colorist who likes to use quality colored pencils. I own several sets of artist grade pencils. I began buying Black Widow sets this year. I think the colors are beautiful, with fun names, and I also appreciate their quality. They perform well in coloring books, layering and blending well. I can get rich color by adding layers. The pencils are good value. Once I began using them, I decided I wanted the complete set, and the Dragon set gives me that. The Dragons are a good collection, adding greens and reds and some other colors to an already robust set. The weaknesses of these pencils are their non uniform casings, and their slightly off balance palette. It is hard to blend an aqua blue, for instance, using several different pencils. But wowee, you can get a gorgeous variety of reds. There are several unique colors. Charcoal green is a personal favorite. I also love Brown Bug, and the new Sabre. I don't do reviews, but I bought 1 set and then ordered another 4 sets over the next 2 days. So, Black Widow definitely deserves a shout out. These are my favorite pencils. Even over my Castle and Prisma Colors. They blend beautifully. They are smooth, silky, and effortless. I can press hard without worrying about breaking them. This set has wonderfully vibrant colors, filling in some holes in the overall colors but some are very close to others. I swatched all my Black Widow pencils out and noted with a star which are from this set so you can see the colors and where they fit in the current available range. I did have a lead break with this set, the Evil Red. It broke twice in a row, the third time I sharpened it very carefully and it didn't break. In the sample I colored and attached here, I tried to use as many of these colors as possible, but didn't get them all in. This set does not come with a white, so I borrowed one from another set to burnish with. Like all black widows, they work best in light layers, building up slowly, from light to dark. I love that you don't get wax bloom with these! Odorless mineral spirits work great if you are using a toothier paper that leaves white specs showing through. As a preference, I don't like these on smooth paper, I feel like they need a little tooth to grab onto. These lay down more like oil pencils in my opinion, not like Prismacolors where you can put down one thick layer and are good to go. I prefer slow layering in my coloring and so these are perfect for me. ... show more

    • My favorite Colored Pencils
Black Widow Dragon colored pencils have exceeded my expectations yet again. I have all the complete sets of Black Widows and these are as excellent as all of the previous sets. The colors are vibrant and a perfect addition to the other sets. The lay down is smooth, layering is wonderful and they are now my go to pencil to color and do art work with. I also own Polychromos and Prismacolor colored pencils, but I find myself returning to these almost exclusively now. For the price point they are amazing and they are comparable to some of the best out there. I would highly recommend them. The Dragon set has completed my collection and now I wait to see if more sets will be forthcoming. I recommend all of the sets of Black Widow, my favorites are the Monarch set, Skin Tone sets, and of course these, but best of all would be to collect all the sets, as the colors all are geared to make one huge set. No need for any other pencils and incredibly affordable. ... show more

Love the colors. These are simi soft pencil. Colors lays down nice and creamy. Blends really well. Have no trouble with point breakage. 2 of the pencils have the writing backward. Not a deal breaker but kills my OCD.
