Description

The Banking Industry Architecture Network (BIAN) is a global, not-for-profit association of banks, solution providers, consultancy companies, integrators and academic partners, with the shared aim of defining a semantic standard for the banking industry covering all banking activity and almost all of the well- known architectural layers. BIAN’s Reference Architecture for the Financial Industry provides its users with a set of building blocks that, when used in different combinations, can support all of the functionality and information a bank needs for both its internal functioning and its collaboration with partners in an Open Finance and Open API economy. BIAN’s Reference Architecture for the Financial Industry is freely available on the BIAN website. This website also provides a wealth of information on both the theory and practice of the standard. So why this book? Importantly, it summarizes all of the above information and guides the reader through it on a step-by-step basis. It provides the reader with a thorough understanding of BIAN’s architecture and how it can be used to support an organization on its journey to becoming an agile business organization and developing an application platform. BIAN is a semantic standard. It provides business building blocks and defines them in business terms. It provides a business view on both the business and application architectures. This second edition not only includes the more recent deliverables, it also takes a stepped approach through the different topics. It aims to be more appealing to a business audience by addressing the building blocks of BIAN and their possible use in business terms, whilst also including many real-life examples of BIAN’s usage. As such, it should not only appeal to application and business architects, but also to their managers, their business partners and other stakeholders who work closely with them. The first part of the book focuses on the theory: BIAN’s organization, the principles and patterns on which its architecture is based, and its building blocks. The second part of the book explains – in methodology-independent terms – how BIAN can be applied in different architectural layers by different disciplines, in co-operation with architects. This part of the book includes a number of practical examples intended to improve the reader’s understanding of the building blocks of the BIAN architecture and encourage them to apply it for the benefit of their own organization. The final part of the book should inspire the reader even further by clearly illustrating the synergy between the content that BIAN delivers and the architecture methodology provided by TOGAF. • Let start the BIAN adoption journey
We cannot change the past, but we can reshape the future. Young people have the opportunity to create a happier, better future. – Dalai Lama A bank operated for many years. Its plan can be compare with an urban plan of a town. The “ingredients” for every town are the same, but the anticipated behavior of its inhabitants can be different. Hence the town plan will be different based on the local circumstances. The town plan is a static view of the actual (as is) or desired (to be) lay out of the city. This town plan can support any desired journey through the city and efficient and effective way. The “utility and infrastructure ingredients” of a city provided standardized “connection interfaces”. The to-be town plan and these standards enable an architect designing a new building to profit from the available infrastructure and utilities, while bringing the actual town plan one step closer to the desired state. The result of building without a governing town plan is a shanty town – buildings and roads are put up as and when they are needed, sewage, water and electricity supply is deficient and over time, chaos is inevitable. Without a town plan for the business, systems are built to meet the immediate needs of the processes as they are today, which will eventually lead to the same inevitable chaos in terms of overlapping and redundant applications and lack of functionality. The problem of application complexity goes much further than the obvious problem of redundancy in the overlapping applications. It is greatly exacerbated when the applications need to interact with each other. Every application has its own specific scope and boundary, and every point-to-point connection is unique. As the application portfolio grows to several hundred overlapping systems it is no surprise that adding or enhancing any system becomes an exercise in tracing highly complex dependencies. By adopting the BIAN standard, Banking architects are provided with a list of “ingredients” and standard connections, that will enable them to progressively rationalize the bank’s application portfolios, eliminating the redundancy and the associated operational complexity The financial industry are changing with banktech, fintech, regtech, suptech in the open API economy. A bank must change and needs to fully participate in this evolution. To survive in an industry with high investments in digitalization and low margins, the banks need to respond very quickly to change in System Agility, Process Agility, Business Agility. Agility is a persistent behavior or ability of an entity exhibits flexibility to accommodate expected or unexpected changes rapidly, follows the shortest time span, and uses economical, simple and quality instruments in a dynamic environment. With the core principles: Separation concerns, Loose coupling, Reusability, Encapsulation, Interoperability, Service Orientation, BIAN Framework is realy a revolution in architecture, a compass for a bank to re-evaluate its own difficulties, problems and challenges and advise how to build blocks for an agile architecture: strategy layer, business layer, application layer, technical layer together with motivation, implementation and migration perspective. BIAN Framework gives Architecture with a broad scope from the highest level -Enterprise Level divided to Domain Levels and System Levels to steer and support the design and implementation of the systems driven by urgency or opportunity. BIAN Framwork can apply for a holistic enterprise view, business layer, application layer, information and data, and interoperability and can use BIAN as a Frame of Reference to find and compare candidate solutions Just go, you will arrive in the BIAN adoption journey on a new cloud landscape to reshape the future. ... show more

  • Great book - essential reading as a framework for practitioners in the financial services industry
This 2nd edition of the BIAN book provides the reader with a detailed explanation of the theory and principles of the BIAN framework and how to apply it in different architectural layers. The book has two parts. The first part is about the origin of BIAN and its mission, the principles of BIAN’s reference architecture, BIAN Service Domains as elemental building blocks of business capabilities in banking, and the BIAN Service Landscape for organizing the Service Domains. The second part covers how BIAN as a reference framework can be used as a blueprint for enterprise analysis, as a business architecture for business design and decisions, as an application architecture for solutions, BIAN BOM for information and data architecture, and BIAN semantic APIs for interoperability. The book is a fully revised version of the one published in 2019. It will be a great addition to your book collection, whether you want to gain foundational knowledge on the BIAN framework and apply it in the digital banking transformation or prepare for the BIAN foundation certification. ... show more

  • BIAN - defining a semantic standard for the banking industry
Good to read and valuable to prepare yourself for the certification. I‘m partially personal and also for business reasons interested in BIAN. Defining a standard is the goal of the BIAN initiative in the banking industry. The book helps to get an insight in BIAN and is a good collection of the content of the framework, the structure, and the building blocks. ... show more
