  • German price for Turkish vise.
The Bessey BV-DF5SB Vise is great so far, albeit I have only owned it for ~1 month. Understand that this vise is (with 90% certainty) a rebranded Ridgid F-50 vise. The only technical difference I could find was that the Bessey is advertised at 90,000 PSI tensile strength steel, whereas the Ridgid F-50 is advertised at 75,000 PSI tensile strength steel. Even the blue paint seems identical. The Ridgid F-50 has the Ridgid logo forged into the vise, whereas the Bessey BV-DF5SB is branded with a small sticker. Bessey is a German based company that, until recently, manufactured clamps almost exclusively. Ridgid is based in Belgium and offers a much broader tool line. Now for the Bessey BV-DF5SB vise. Country of Origin (COO): - Although Bessey is a German based company with the vast majority of its clamps made in Germany, this vise, advertised as "made in Europe" is NOT made in Germany. The Bessey BV-DF5SB is MADE IN TURKEY (the sole reason for 4 stars instead of 5) Jaws: - Bessey advertises this as a 5" vise, but the jaws actually measure closer to 5.5" - Be aware that the jaws on this unit are not replaceable, so be careful doing any grinding or drilling of material while using this vise. - The jaws are perfectly parallel, and because of the extremely precise lockup of the assembly, exhibit no slop in any direction. - The faces assume a mild cross-hatch pattern which has not been an issue for me; I purchased (separately) the "Bessey BV-NVJ Multi-Purpose Vise Jaws (Jaws ONLY)" which work well when securing sensitive stock, small tubing/piping, or odd shaped objects. At ~$15, they were a worthwhile addition. - The pipe jaws are quite stout and provide ample lockup of pipe in the horizontal direction. The teeth on the pipe jaws are pretty aggressive, so if you do not want to damage your material, be sure to protect it with a rubber / leather pad. Action: - The spindle screw engages immediately in either direction with ZERO take up / creep. In other words, if I want to tighten the vise after loosening it or 'vise'-versa , the threads of the spindle are mated so perfectly with the fixed portion of the vise, the change in direction occurs immediately. This makes fine adjustment of material being held a snap. I am really impressed by this. - The spindle screw 'housing' or 'guard' material and moving jaw are forged in 1 piece, and are therefore the same strong steel throughout. The housing does a great job at keeping dirt and dust out without taking up too much width or height. - The smooth and wobble-free action of the vise is a product of the alignment and interplay between the machined surfaces of the housing (see the silver chamfered corners of the spindle housing in the picture) and the fully adjustable / serviceable alignment plate attached beneath the rear (static) jaw. The plate rides along the machined surfaces of the spindle housing keeping it in line and keeping the jaws parallel at all times. The adjustability of this feature is great because if the jaws do come out of parallel or the action becomes messy down the road, the plate can be tightened back down and the vise will operate as it did the day I bought it (That's the idea anyways). Components: - As stated above, the jaws are not removable. - The handle (for tightening and loosening the jaws) is long and sturdy. It is held captive within the spindle via rubber rings that fit on each end in machined recesses. The packaging included 3 of these rings (1 extra) which is nice of Bessey. - The smaller handles (for tightening and loosening the rotation of the vise) are the same, and there is 1 handle on each side, which provides very positive lockup when you want to keep it from rotating. - There are 3 holes to mount this vise to your bench. The side without a mounting hole goes to the front, and by mounting the vise with the baseplate at the edge of your bench allows the user to secure material vertically with no difficulty. In other words, when the vise is mounted such that the baseplate is at the edge of the bench, the rear (static) jaw is in line (vertically) with the bench. Because of the 3 hole configuration, I suspect that this is intended to be a bench vise, and not a vise ideal for mounting to a plate on a bumper or trailer hitch. TL:DR The fit and finish is great and so far she hasn't let me down. I have many German made Bessey clamps and was expecting the quality of this vise to be on par with them, which it is. I was very discouraged to find out (upon the arrival of the vise) that it is manufactured in Turkey, NOT Germany. The price is a bit steep especially considering the Ridgid F-50 can be had for ~$285 w/ free shipping via amazon prime. Weldfabulous (the amazon vendor) took their sweet ass time shipping it. It didn't even leave their facility for until 10 days after I ordered it. It came double boxed, which is necessary with a heavy item such as this, and undamaged. I would probably not buy this one again if given the chance. For the money, and since it is not made in Germany, there are better offerings out there. Having said that, the vise is great and I expect it to outlast me. ... show more

  • Stout vise for its size and fine operation.
This is a mid sized bench vise with very smooth and fine operation. At the same time it is very robust with very strong hold. I purchased this as an open box with small damages to the paint. I do not have any issue with it being made in Turkey and is not coming with a side of sauerkraut and cold beer. It is made well, regardless where it was made. ... show more

  • Robust and sturdy vise.
Very nice vise. Well built and sturdy. Delivered without a handle so I could not use. Seller worked with overseas distributor to get me a handle within two weeks. Happy. One downside is the jaw opening width is too short for all my projects.
