  • An expertly presented compilation of axe forging!!! An expertly presented compilation of axe forging!!!
Format: Paperback
I've been following Nils Ögren on YouTube for several years and have been forging as a hobby for almost 11yrs... Probably about 8yrs ago I forged my own axe eye drift and attempted a couple miserable failures on hatchets so I set aside that aspiration for a while and pursued other blacksmithing works...well I finally gave it another go a few months ago, following along one of Nils' videos (my hatchet pictured). So when I found out that Nils took the time to put his expertise and talent to paper, I had to buy it. This book provides all of the essentials required for a competent beginner blacksmith to start their own journey of forging axes. The chapters are all very easily digestible and cover all the necessary topics like tools, methods, steel selection, and heat treatment. The text, (which is never too wordy), is perfectly complemented with excellent drawings and photographs and serves well to keep the reader engaged and ensure that all the points are clearly understood. Overall, the book is clear, concise and expertly compiled, avoiding pedantic explanations that could easily go deep in the weeds and cause more confusion than clarity. As Nils explains, this book will not hold your hand and guarantee that your first axe is perfect, you have to put in the hours and build the experience but this book will provide a solid foundation and helpful advice for facing inevitable mistakes. Happy reading! ... show more

  • This is the book your looking for! This is the book your looking for!
Format: Paperback
I have been a smith for years, and have always had an interest in making axes. However while there are books on knife and blacksmithing, there are almost no books on axe making, until now! This is exactly the book you are looking for if you want to learn how to make axes, and is the new standard on what all axe making books should be! Nils Ogren had also included helpful business information and QR codes to videos in the book for more information. It is an easy read packed with tons of useful information. I am looking forward to more books like this in the future! Nils is a true inspiration and an amazing teacher! He hit it out of the park with this book! ... show more

  • Good - not great. Lacks technical detail that would have been easy to include
Format: Paperback
While this is not a bad book, I have to admit that for the price I find it disappointing. I hope that Nils can accept this criticism as well intentioned, as there ISN'T really any other axe forging book in print that I'm aware of. I really was hoping for some more specific "basic recipes" for forging an axe. But a great deal of technical details for beginners that would have been easy for the author to include are instead glossed over. Things like tongs. It would have been great for the author to say "these are the tongs I like for handling the type of axes I make, here are their measurements. This is why I like this style of tong for this job, vs saying "figure out what kind of tongs would best for you" WHAT??? This same thing holds true for other speciallized tools for axe forging. Much more detail (including preferably example drawings with suggested measurements) should have been provided with regards to eye punches, and axe eye drifts. Especially for the first one or two "beginner" projects. These are tools the "beginner" has to forge/grind themselves and it would be helpful for a beginner's book to help the reader out by giving them more specific recommendations for tools that will be able to WORK. Makeing a drift is a big job. Making one wrong and having to do it over is discouraging. I also think that the axe forging area of the book is scanty in detail. There should be a layout drawing of the billet (with measurements) to give beginners a clear starting point. It is obviously possible for the author to make such drawings, but he chose not to. This should be changed if a revision is ever printed. ... show more

Bought this book in late September of 25 , couldn't wait for it to get here. Got horribly ill first of November 25. Just now getting back on my feet and making up for lost time! Just finished my first axe ever, all my excitement restored. Thank you NILS ÖGREN.
