Description

Former Olympic figure skater and self-professed America's Sweetheart Adam Rippon shares his underdog journey from beautiful mess to outrageous success in this hilarious, big-hearted memoir that the Washington Post calls "comedic gold." Your mom probably told you it's what on the inside that counts. Well, then she was never a competitive figure skater. Olympic medalist Adam Rippon has been making it pretty for the judges even when, just below the surface, everything was an absolute mess. From traveling to practices on the Greyhound bus next to ex convicts to being so poor he could only afford to eat the free apples at his gym, Rippon got through the toughest times with a smile on his face, a glint in his eye, and quip ready for anyone listening. Beautiful on the Outside looks at his journey from a homeschooled kid in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to a self-professed American sweetheart on the world stage and all the disasters and self-delusions it took to get him there. Yeah, it may be what's on the inside that counts, but life is so much better when it's beautiful on the outside. Read more

  • Love love love this book!
I’ve listened to this audiobook about 6 times since it came out, but I wanted the hardcover book for my library as well. When I saw that I could get an autographed copy, I just had to have it. If you haven’t read or listened to this book, I suggest you do so immediately! You will laugh and cry and sometimes you’ll do both at the same time. Adam Rippon is more then just an Olympic medalist, he is truly an inspiration and an amazing human being. ... show more

  • Great Read
Format: Kindle
The book was hilarious and tells it like it is. He was brutally honest about so many things many of us would sugarcoat. This book gives us so many lessons of how to be honest with yourself and those around you. I love the relationship between Adam and his mother. There were so many moments I laughed out loud. It’s a truly inspirational read. I would highly recommend this book. ... show more

  • As charming as Adam himself
This was even better than I expected it to be...funny, charming, introspective, and brutally honest at times, it captures his "voice" perfectly. He talks about being gay in the book, but his story is so much more than than that, and inspirational not just for gay people or figure skating fans, but for anyone who has had to face daunting obstacles and tried to find their own way in the world no matter what. Some of the stories are known from interviews and articles, but there's a lot of new material here for fans of Adam -- and maybe even non-fans, because this book might help them understand why we love him so much. ... show more

  • Love Adam and this book
Format: Hardcover
As an avid fan of figure skating, I really enjoyed this book, and I must say Adam explains the elements of skating in an easy-to-grasp manner that makes this book enjoyable for all audiences. Adam perfectly blended his storytelling with his sarcastic humor. Would totally recommend!

  • Entertaining, funny read
Format: Kindle
Unless you are a figure skater yourself, a book about the life of an Olympic figure skater probably sounds boring, but Adam Rippon doesn't do boring. The book is chock full of emotional stories, witty comments, and of course great insight into the ups and downs of a middle class young man struggling to become an Olympic figure skater. I highly recommend it. ... show more

  • So many lessons!
Format: Kindle
I really did not know what to expect but I really enjoyed this book. There are many lessons to learn from this book, hard work pays off, be who you truly are, take chances, etc. What is also evident is that this is a caring young man with what I find to be a hilarious sense of humor.

  • I laughed. I cried. I nearly wet myself.
Format: Hardcover
I laughed. I cried. I nearly wet myself. I knew the book would be funny and entertaining, but it far exceeded my expectations. Adam is a true storyteller, and I'm thrilled he's now sharing THIS gift with us. (Seriously, is there anything he can't do?) He doesn't hold back or sugarcoat anything, and it doesn't seem like there's really anything off limits as he tells us about his life in skating and, well, his life thus far. I learned quite a bit about what it's like to be an elite skater, what it's like to work towards the Olympics and everything that goes into it, and a bit about what it's like to be Adam Rippon. He's brutally honest, self-deprecating, and a masterful storyteller that had me reading the book from cover to cover in one day. If you're a fan of Adam, a fan of figure skating, a fan of athletes, and/or just want a good laugh, pick up this book. You won't regret it! (i own the hardcover, kindle ebook, and audiobook and it's worth every penny). ... show more
