Description

FROM THE 1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF PEOPLE WE MEET ON VACATION AND BOOK LOVERS! A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters. Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast. They’re polar opposites. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block. Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She’ll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he’ll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really. Read more

  • I loved it!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 🌶️ Synopsis: Gus is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January is a bestselling romance author. They first met in college and he constantly criticized her writing and her, calling her a "fairy princess". He's dark and broody and sexy. Years later they end up neighbors on the beach. Their lives are falling apart. His personal life. Her dad's death. Seems the only thing they have in common is writer's block. Review: This was my first Emily Henry book. I'm not sure if it was because she's new to me or because I was reading a paperback instead of on my iPad, but I was slow to get into it. Or maybe it took longer because there was a lot to process. Lots of emotions. Lots of backstory. Lots of information. I spent a lot of time just processing. When you take 2 people with a brief history, who are both broken in their own ways, looking for answers they're afraid of, there are bound to be a lot of things to process. I loved their witty banter and laughed many times throughout. I also cried a bunch. ... show more

  • Emotional
This is the first book I’ve read by this author. The heroine is emotional and feels deeply. She has had a rough year and meets the hero when she is at her lowest. The hero is guarded, pursues death in his writing and cynical. This was not a light hearted beach read, although the H/h lived on the beach. It did have a HEA but it was fraught with many unsure moments of the outcome. I borrowed the book from the library and I will read another from this author when I want a realistic story and not an escape read. ... show more

  • Thoroughly Enjoyed
I can't say this is a literary masterpiece but I actually really enjoyed this book. I was a bit skeptical because I didn't enjoy Emily Harp's other book, Book Lovers. But this one hit the spot for me. I really admired how both characters were flawed. It made you connect with them more. Usually in these types of books one character is semi flawed in a perfect kind of way. Like their flaws actually make them good. Not these two. There is something to actually loathe about both of them just as much as there is to like. I read some reviews that didn't like the main character, January's inner dialogue. I didn't mind it. In fact I kind of related to it, as someone who lives in their head a lot. It is sometimes annoying (also in real life 🙂) . I also appreciated that the sex scenes were not so over the top. I'm not prudish, but usually in this type of genre (I've read my fair share) it can go from a sweet, loving, heart string pulling moment to hardcore porn. Completely ruining the moment. This was slightly less vulgar. The title of the book can be misleading depending on how you look at it. It didn't bother me that it wasn't about actually being a "beach read", although I'm not one to harp on titles or chapter names. All in all I would recommend this book. ... show more

  • Book Review
Beach Read by Emily Henry ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I really liked the characters in this book, and the way the family secrets played into the major story line. Gus and January’s rivals to lovers trope had me smiling every time they got a little closer, and their book competition was one of my personal favorite moments of the book. Really good overall, and I recommend you try it! ... show more

  • Predictable, but an entertaining read
This book was pretty predictable (but also very unrealistic--I can't picture this situation happening to real life humans), but the characters were likeable, there were a few surprises that I didn't expect, and I liked that the plot included extra details and plot lines beyond just the main characters' romance. I liked January's journey and what she learned about herself. Overall, it was an enjoyable read and I would try another book by this author. ... show more

  • Another Hit By Emily Henry
I don’t love Rom Coms but if I’m reading one, it’s Emily Henry’s. Her writing is so good and of course I cried (at the Dad stuff not the romance stuff). I’m so excited to see this as a movie/show.

  • Another great Emily Henry book!
I really enjoyed Book Lovers, so this novel by Emily Henry was quickly added to my tbr. Since this has been Bookstagram's favorite, it needs no introduction. First, the lake house setting. I marveled at it and kept picturing myself there! If it wasn't for the circumstances surrounding January Andrews inheriting the house, I would say it was a perfect setup for her for writing her next novel. But it was quite an agonizing situation, and the author captured the emotions and the grieving process for the lost loved one and the betrayal in such a delicate way. SO good! The romance was wonderfully developed in this rivals to lovers trope. There was just the right amount of spicy for my liking, and I truly enjoyed the two main characters. This was a quick read and it tugged at all the heartstrings. Writer's block is a real deal, and if it wasn't for it, this could have been a different novel! My second Emily Henry book definitely didn't disappoint! I am always cautious about approaching "booksta made me do it" books, but I'm glad I picked this one up. I will absolutely be reading the other books by Emily. 4.5/5 stars from me. ... show more

  • Fantastic
I have thoroughly enjoyed every book by Emily Henry I have read, and this one was no exception. Ms. Henry builds a world that draws you in with characters that are flawed and seem real. January, Gus, Shandi and all the characters that make an appearance were fantastic, and the plot moved along nicely with a good ending. ... show more
