  • In-Depth Comparison
Size: 120mm PWM Style: Pure Wings 2
Quiet to one person may certainly not be considered quiet by someone else. For that reason, fan reviews are rarely reliable. Testing with a decibel meter can technically prove one fan is quieter than another, but doesn’t address the quality of the sound. I can subjectively say the Pure Wings fans are quiet and comparatively sound more pleasant than many other fans... mostly because I’ve tested and used a lot of fans (see photos). This is a subjective comparison from someone who has tested a lot of fans The Pure Wings are not the quietest fan and they don’t move the most air either. But, they are quiet enough and the sound they do make is extremely pleasant. I can detect no noticeable noise from the hub and the air from the blades has a soft sound. Below 600rpm, they are silent from any distance. Around 800rpm they become barely audible and are what I would consider quiet until 1200rpm. By 1500rpm, they are loud, but the noise is never harsh and does not drone at all. I run mine on a curve from 500rpm at idle and 1200rpm at load. All fans will make noise if you spin them fast enough. What matters the most is the tone of that noise. I have fans that are technically quiet, but have an unpleasant sound either from blades that drone or hubs that whirr, tick, or whine. The Pure Wings have none of those negative qualities and are comparatively better than everything else I’ve tested. For an alternative option, the Noctua Redux are the closest in terms of rpm and price. The Redux comes packaged the same as the Pure Wings, which is with nothing except 4 screws, both being an economy line. The Redux does have a higher static pressure than the Pure Wings, but that blade design also drones just a bit. The Arctic P12 are priced about the same and are receiving rave reviews. I would pass on those though. Two of mine make a noticeable tick and all of them have a whirring noise from the motor around 1200rpm. The best options sub-$15 are the Pure Wings or the Redux. If you want to spend more, Be Quiet Silent Wings and Noctua Brown are the best in terms of performance and the quality of noise. NZXT retail fans are also quite good. I was not impressed with Cougar Vortex fans or Arctic P12. Avoid the Cooler Master MF at all costs, they have a subjectively loud tick that makes them unusable. Any Corsair fan I’ve tested moves a ton of air, but are always loud. Be Quiet and Noctua are the best choices in my opinion, even their economy lines are better than the vast majority of what’s out there from other brands. **Update: I did some testing on the Pure Wings 140mm PWM non-high speed. That model has a rated rpm of 1000. I did have some trouble getting mine to 1000rpm using my digital fan hub, but instead topped out at 900rpm. I normally see a reduction due to dust filters and general case resistance, but it’s usually 50rpm or less. What I can say is that the 140mm is subjectively quieter than the 120mm at the same rpm, which is impressive given how quiet the 120mm is. My recommendation if you want the 140mm option is to buy the high speed version and set a custom fan curve. Or, buy the regular version and just run it at 80% to 100% all the time, which would work because it is so quiet. If you found my comparison helpful, please press that button. ... show more

  • Holy Moses!
Size: 120mm Style: Pure Wings 2
Ive got a pretty extreme rig. Massive Lian Li case with liquid cooling CPU, quad GPU setup, dual PSU's, 240mm radiator for the CPU and about 7 case fans trying to create a proper (and funcional) air flow. I had a mix match of Enermax fans, corsair fans and cooler master fans pumping air into my case. After installing 6 of these Be Quiet! fans into my pc, I have never been so floored in my life! before my rig sounded like a turbo prop airplane or a demonic hoover. now? It sounds like a kitten yawning or a sock being dragged across a silk sheet. an angelic whisper of confidence that is keeping the harsh dilapidated computer components I have, cool and silent as a velvet hair gliding across the smoothest skin on your body. 10/10 ... show more

  • Good fan
Size: 92mm Style: Pure Wings 2
I ordered a Pure Wings 2 non-PWM 92mm fan (BL045). I received the PWM version (BL038) which has BQ PUW2-9225-MR-PWM on the back and a 4-pin connector. This doesn't really matter since I received essentially the same fan. There is no difference using this fan in a non-PWM circuit other than it uses a 4-pin vice 3-pin connector, and of course there will be a small portion of the connector extending past a 3-pin header. These connectors were designed to be compatible with each other. Pin 1 is ground, 2 is +12, 3 is RPM sense and 4 is the PWM signal. Using a PWM fan (4-pin) on a non-PWM header (3-pin) just means that fan will always run at 100% just like a non-PWM fan (unless fan speed is controlled by varying input voltage on pins 1-2). I mention this only because the description of the fan (it is listed as BL045 which is a non-PWM fan) does not correctly match the item that was sent (BL038 is their PWM version) and buyers should be aware of the discrepancy. There are several comments here about receiving a PWM fan instead of the non-PWM fan in the description so it looks like PWM fans are being sent for both. Decided to use it in a PWM circuit. Works great (and silent). ... show more

  • IT FAILED!
Size: 92mm Style: Pure Wings 2
I was very pleased with how quiet this fan was when I first installed it. Two months later, it was too quiet. It had quit, and forced my computer to shut down -- twice. Thank Gaia it has a good thermal shut-down system or it would have burned out. Nothing manufactured en-mass is without the occasional failure, so I'm not angry, but I expect the Pure Wings company to make good on this. I'll update this review if they do. ... show more

  • Fan Connector and PWM
Size: 92mm Style: Pure Wings 2
The box states plainly that the fan has a 3-pin connector, but the fan I got has a 4-pin connector. This is a BL045 92 mm fan. The part number on the fan label is PUW2-9225-MR-PWM, so I assume it has PWM capability. This isn't a problem for my installation, and it might be a positive for many people. But it's not the way the fan is represented. If you expect it to fit a 3-pin connector on your motherboard, you may be in for a surprise. I recently bought a 120 mm fan, same series, and it had a 3-pin connector. ... show more

  • Bought two in the past few years and might buy more in the future!
Size: 140mm Style: Pure Wings 2
About four years ago I built my own computer. I have a Corsair 300R case and from the get-go I used the stock fans that came preinstalled. About a year in one started to make a grinding noise and I replaced it with one of the Pure Wings 2 fans, and was left impressed right away with how easy it was to install the new fan as well as the low noise level they had at max RPM. The second time and more recently my front chassis fan was making a loud grinding noise as well (which may have definitely been the bearings going out) so I went with a brand I knew and bought another one of these fans. This time around it was just as easy although the screws were too big so I had to reuse the screws from the stock fan. Again, quiet again as always. I would very much recommend going with these fans if you want a middle-ground between quiet and affordable. Three years later with one of these fans and have had no problems, so hopefully the one I have just purchased and installed will also be the same. My only complaint is the pricing of these fans on Amazon, whereas other outlets offer them cheaper - except consider the fact Amazon would be the only place to get faster shipping. ... show more
