  • This does NOT look or feel like a "budget" machine
Color: 02 Red Walnut Wood
I'm 42 and average by pretty much any metric, and while I'm fortunate enough to be on the slender side, I'm at the age now where I can literally feel myself getting softer and weaker by the year. I've been telling myself since my early 30's that I need to do something about it, and after many failed gym memberships and attempts at regular running routines over the years, I've decided that rowing might just be the thing for me. I'm much more into the idea of zoning out to a podcast or audiobook and just doing repetitive movements on a rower than going to the gym and dealing with complicated workout routines that I know I'm not going to follow through with after a few months. So I started looking into rowers, and as you've probably seen there are a LOT of options, but pretty quickly I knew that I wanted a water rower for natural feel and the supposedly "meditative" swooshing noise. I read the reviews and I watched the YouTube videos, I looked at the Ergottas and the HydroRowers and the WaterRowers and all the other name brands, but I really didn't want to spend over a grand on a machine that for all my good intentions might end up sitting in the corner as a reminder of the money I wasted. I liked the Mr. Captains as a budget-friendly alternative and I ALMOST pulled the trigger on it- in fact I had one in my Amazon cart - but I was a little bothered by the fact that they're not real wood, but veneered MDF. I know, big deal., but the other thing was they wanted $100 more to get it in red walnut rather than oak. I mean, am I really gonna pay an extra hundred bucks for some red veneer? I decided to look just a little longer, and I found this Battife. No video reviews, not very many Amazon reviews, a brand I'd never heard of or seen mentioned in any of the dozens of "Best Water Rowers" articles I'd read. But damned if it didn't look nice, and it's (supposedly) real wood. And I could get the red walnut for a hundred bucks less than the Mr. Captain. Fine, what the heck. Weeks of research on what pretty much came down to an impulse buy. Delivery was supposed to be 2-3 weeks out. Ugh, I hate waiting for something once I've made my decision, but whatever, none of the other rowers would have arrived any faster - I checked. While waiting I kept second guessing myself. Should I have gotten the name-brand WaterRower? Do I trust a "knock-off" manufacturer to line up all the holes correctly, especially in (supposedly) real solid wood? Am I going to have to send parts back and wait even longer to get replacements before I get to meditate to those lovely swooshing sounds? Would it be too loud? Imagine my surprise when it arrived today, a mere 5 days after my order. And both boxes came on the same delivery! I work from home and had just started my lunch break, and I couldn't resist at least popping the boxes open and taking a look. First off, can confirm; this is 100% real, solid red walnut. Check photo #4 to see the end grain on one of the pieces. You can't fake that. And the pieces are beautifully crafted, the edges perfectly straight and even. Not a knot or warp in sight. The wood is lightly treated, just enough of a finish that I wouldn't be scared if I spilled some water on it, but light enough to really emphasize the natural beauty of the wood. I didn't bother with the manual, I just used the tutorial video on the Amazon page, and to my surprise I had the whole thing together before the end of my lunch break. My unit didn't exactly match the one in the video, it looks like they've made some slight improvements; more washers for the wheels, closer tolerances, etc. Adding water took almost as long as putting the thing together, but that's only because I didn't have a super clean bucket laying around and had to use a pitcher. I've got it all assembled, and I could not be happier. The seat rolls smoothly and silently. The tank is as clear as crystal. There's actually water in the tank in my images, but it's all so clear you can barely tell. The structure is solid as a rock. I keep looking over at it, wondering how this thing is the "bargain" version. Okay, sure, it doesn't have a fancy monitor, but between phones and tablets I've probably got half a dozen fancy monitors around here if I ever feel like I need one. And that water swooshing sound, yes it's as soft and gentle and soothing as you hope, just enough to be satisfying without being remotely loud. Is this the machine that will finally get me into an exercise routine I can stick with? Time will tell, but damn if this isn't one handsome, well-made piece of kit. ... show more

  • No regrets
Color: 02 Oak Wood
This rower is built to last and is suspiciously exactly like another manufacture…at half the price? Yes “made in China” but designed in USA. I found the rower to be of excellent quality with no problems in assembly or usage. The rower I owned previously (resistant turn knob) failed too quickly bc of seat roller bearings. It was inevitable and quite a few rowers share this defective design. The rubber roller wheels on an axle sold me and the water resistance is so much smoother and gives a great swooshing sound each row…my 88 yo mom tried it and wants one now…save the $500 and buy this model. You won’t regret it! ... show more

  • Solid, great value, great customer service
Color: 03 Red Walnut with Support
Overall: Great! Recommend! Bought this rower back in April. I use it average about 1 to 3 times a week, usually max ~10-15 minutes, shortest 2-5, longest ~30 min. Looks - Beautiful sold wood and I love the dark water barrel. Looks quality and $$$. It’s easy to maneuver and lift to stand and set back down when ready to use again. Blends well with our interior, and not a large black plastic eye sore. Setup - We experienced the alignment issue at the foot base part, but my husband is handy and may have used his own screws with drill (I can’t remember) and a little brute force to eventually make it connect. The water pump it comes with was ridiculous easy and cool to use. We used distilled water. I bought reservoir cleaning tablets, but haven’t used them yet, but also probably need to replace the water now to assure continued freshness. Have had it almost 8 months and no mildew issue. Experience - It’s been great and the swishing water and sometimes creak of the wood truly makes you feel like you’re rowing a canoe on the water. Meditative and relaxing. Additionally, I’ve downloaded the Hydrow app on my iPad to use their Journey water videos to help that effect. Neither the iPad or app connects or tracks with my rowing of course, but the display monitor helps you manually track your needed stats like RPMs in tandem and I use an Apple Watch for heart rate monitoring. Posture is key with the machine. After longer uses I feel it in my hips and lower back and need to stretch those areas immediately after. Not sure if I’m not used to using those muscles, previous injuries unrelated to this machine, if a posture issue, or just what happens with rowers after long use but it’s not every session (mostly when I do it multiple days in a row or longer sessions). It’s low impact so won’t feel that major burn or joint paint after a workout. Movement is Leg > core > arms. I mostly feel the strength resistance in my arms, lats, and core. I’m short so not sure I get best leg push resistance as I’m already pulling by that point. However, I definitely burn calories and still feel like I got a good cardio workout in with some potential for toning. Moreso when I row at faster HIIT speeds, but keeping it steady and rhythmic is preferred. I use the machine in tandem with daily walking, some jogging, some yoga/Pilates, and mat strength & floor exercises. Support - Customer service has been great. A few weeks ago the battery in the display monitor exploded making the display unusable. I contacted them and was immediately sent a replacement. Works like new! ... show more

  • Nice and useful
Color: 01 Red Walnut Wood
Everything is fine, just be ready to replace some of the rolling parts beneath the seat after a while . Cheap speare parts but it took me a while to find them. It would be better if the manufacturer offers them in Amazon as well

  • Have a friend with you when you put this together, and hold on to the siphon when you add the water
Color: 01 Red Walnut Wood
This is a wonderful rowing machine! It is aesthetically pleasing as well as functional, and super smooth and quiet while using. If you choose to buy this rower, and I do recommend it as a mid line entry into rowing machines, take this advice: I. Have a friend with you when you set it up. And, 2. When you go to fill the reservoir, hold on to the pipe from the siphon. When I went to fill up the tank, I dropped the plastic 4-in siphon tip. Clunk. WTH! It took two of us 15 minutes, and a sharp pair of curved pliers to finangle out the 4-in plastic tube that would have 100% kept the resistance paddles from working. This is a weird design flaw with the siphon, not the rower. This is a wonderful machine and I'm looking forward to using it for many years to come! ... show more
