Description

This Variety Pack contains four exotic species lumber including zebrawood, purpleheart, padauk and okoume. Zebrawood has a golden-yellow color with narrow veining or streaks of dark brown to black, giving a zebra-like appearance; Purpleheart lumber is a deep and beautiful eggplant purple once exposed to oxygen, and further ages to a dark brown; Padauk is a bright orange or almost crimson wood when freshly cut, but oxidizes to a darker, rich purple-brown over time; Okoume is a lighter hardwood (both in weight and in color) and only darkens slightly with age.

New to wood working but these are some good pieces of wood. I did not have to do any adjustments to the wood out-of-the-box. Everything was straight and smooth. Proceeded right to gluing up to work on a cutting board design.

Size: 3/4" x 2" x 12"
I received 8 perfect pieces of wood (2 of each species). There is absolutely no cracks, checks, chips, or discoloration anywhere. All 8 wood pieces are 3/4" x 2" x 12", cut perfectly square on 6 sides, and sanded smooth to around 120 grit or so. All 8 wood pieces have great looking grain and color. The trick to getting a deep "permanent" purple color out of the Purple Heart wood is to sand it, wipe it down with Acetone, and put it in sunlight for about an hour (don't forget to rotate and flip each piece). The UV light works with the Acetone to greatly deepen the purple color, and the Acetone won't raise the wood grain after sanding. After getting the desired shade of purple, lock it in with a few coats of Polyurethane. The deep purple color will last virtually forever if kept indoors. I really like this wood, and I will definitely be purchasing more wood from this seller, in the future, for more woodworking projects. Highly recommended! ... show more

Their wood is very nice. I got a variety pack with one badly warped piece of Zebrawood. Sent them a message and they promised to send out a whole new set without return of the good pieces I had. This is how customer service is done! Will gladly order from them again.

Great box to get to know some exotic woods. I found the zebra wood hard to work with and will not plan to buy zebra wood again, but it does finish beautifully if you can prevent it from chipping, burning and tearing out. The two pieces of Purple Heart are really very purple. I made one into a tool rail I can see and feel everyday, and I hope sealing it with the finish will keep the purple color a long time. I will buy this box again, or maybe some other variety without the zebra wood. 5 stars. ... show more
