    • Good tool for the price with some minor issues

Comes in a nice case, looks and feels like a quality product. The accessories are pretty standard and should meet most peoples needs. Some reviews indicated that the motor and/or the flexible extension became hot after a short use so I decided to do some basic testing with the extension attached. 1) Ran the tool for 15 min. at the highest speed (#6) for 15 mi. then 2) reduced the speed to the lowest speed (#1) for an additional 5 min and checked for any speed variation. There was no speed variation and both the tool and the flexible extension remained very cool. The grip on the extension did get warmer but not at all hot. Then decided to put the tool under some load. 3) I chucked up the larger buffing pad, applied some compound and buffed a metal piece for a couple of min at the highest speed. The motor slowed a bit under load but nothing abnormal. Then did some deburring of a metal piece using the small grinding wheel. I decided the acid test would be to 4) try and drill a hole on a pine 2 X 4 with the included 1/8 in drill bit. This did not work out so well. The correct drill speed for this size drill is 3000 rpm which is close to the slowest speed of the tool. Drilled about 3/4 inch at #1 speed but it was a real struggle for the tool at this point. I could drill the hole at a much higher speed (#5) but you will ruin any steel bit at these kinds of speed. This tool, according to the instructions, is supposed to have a metal insert in the nose cone that can be used to tighten the chuck. Mine was missing. Contacted the company and ask them to send me the missing part. One more thing. All these flexible extensions are not, repeat not, designed to be bent at anything more then a very moderate angle/radius. If they are operated at to small a radius they will surely overheat and break. So, no long term test, but this tool seems to do the job it was designed for. Its not a RotoZip production tool but it seems to be a great value. Would buy again ... show more

    • A mostly very good rotary tool at a great price

This is a solid rotary tool, with a few minor caveats. I bought it to replace a different brand that cost three times as much and fried itself after two years of very light use. So if this one lasts as long, I’ll still be ahead of the game. First the good: - The price, obviously. - Comes with a decent selection of attachments, including a flexible shaft (see caveats below) - Handy carrying case - Feels solidly made - Variable speeds The caveats: - The button used to lock the collet to change bits is a little finicky and requires a bit of twisting to get it to engage. - The on-off switch is on the butt-end of the tool, near the cord. Would have been handier with a thumb switch near the front so you could toggle on or off one-handed. - The included instructions for tightening the collet on the Flexible shaft are flat-out wrong. I nearly returned the tool after being unable to fully tighten any bits when using the extension. However, a brief internet search yielded instructions for a similar brand which worked. You need to insert a small L-shaped key, similar to an Allen wrench (included with the accessories) to brace the collet and tighten it. So just be aware of that. I had to replace a knuckle on a car and as always, I ran into an unexpected problem and new tools were needed for the problem. The tools purchased could not solve the problem so the backup plan was to cut it off! Luckily this kit was available without much cost. I already suffered added expenses just to replace my knuckle, so that I can replace a hub assembly that is stuck on like no other, so I did not want to spend much more. This was at the right price, with the right accessories and decent quality! The price is so right that once you use it for your initial need, you feel good about keeping it - even if you never use it again! The assortment of accessories were good, even though the main accessory - the bolt cutting wheels, only included 4 - and two of them got destroyed! One was my fault for tightening the mandrel too tight, while the other just flew away somewhere, never to be found! One mandrel got bent as well. Once perfected with the device, it did what it was supposed to do, even though I had to be in the most awkward positions to do it! The ONLY negative I can give this thing is the attachment extension (which played a large factor in my purchase) was weaker when compared to using the main device itself. In fact, the loses in two wheels were due to using the extension! Once I just used the device itself - no problems! I got this because I thought that I would have to get in a tight space that the device could not reach, but it ended up reaching. I do have another job (drilling out a broken off bolt!) that I hope this can handle and I hope that the extension can hold together for it. Other than that - I have no complaints and this was a much needed tool, contemplated for years, but I never made the move on it until I NEEDED to - i'm glad that I did. The price of this tool made it more attractive to me because I had a specific job for it and I didn't want to spend too much on something I might only use once. It performed to my expectations for the cutting work I did and I also appreciated the grinding accessories included with thr tool. Compared to a pricier unit with a quick change chuck, the price point is reflected in the basic design of the bit changing mechanism and the tiny screw that holds them on seems pretty easy to loose. The accessories are decent quality. And there is a good assortment for a variety of work and there are several of each kind. It will accept any srew on bit, you certainly could buy some better ones for your needs. I was totally happy with the price and performance. The lifespan might be less than the best rated tools, but they cost a lot more, so for a specific job or occasional use this is a great choice from many similar items. ... show more
