Format: Avebury

Description

A solo album that establishes Abbie Lathe's credentials in folk territory, Avebury is a colourful, broad mixture of traditional songs, a clutch of acoustic pop rock covers and her own eclectic originals. Abbie's warm, expressive voice decorates Avebury Song, with frolic and an English root. That same Englishness pervades the ballad Searching for Lambs, her vocal a rich, whispered, come hither, as well as a laid back, almost classical rendering of Paul Weller's English Rose.

  • achieving good pacing. The Jam cover is beautiful
This is a solid four-star record with one added star for Abbie's girl-next-door likability. Naturally, I first caught onto that likability on 'Bib and Tuck.' Own that album, by the way. As for this record, it stands alone as an organic staple. Not flashy, but natural and healthy. The tracks were sequenced well, mixing originals and covers, achieving good pacing. The Jam cover is beautiful, and I actually prefer her version of Gilbert O'Sullivan's 'Nothing Rhymed' to the original. As for Abbie's originals, you'll have to just enjoy their pure and simple magic once you own the CD. For me, the best track here is 'Curlew.' And yes, the repeated piano motif does call to mind a bird in flight. Gorgeous, and liberating. Order this album, and be glad to own it. ... show more
