Autel Evo II Pro review: (I've updated this review after owning it for about 2 weeks now 06/30/2020) It is a not-quite-ready-for-release quirky aircraft, wherein some basic bugs have not even been worked out. But it has an absolutely great camera and gimbal! What a dichotomy, what a shame! I think the many bugs the aircraft has, could end up crashing a lot of Evo IIs and breaking the amazing cameras and gimbals right off of them. A few specifics: 1. It flies herky-jerky, as if unseen obstacles were there, when there are none. And you can shut off all the visual sensors, but this behavior will continue. In fact, I've seen many instances that proved the visual sensor cameras are actually still on, when you have turned them all off. 2. The range isn't as good as DJI drones, on average I would say it is about half. Also, within 10 seconds of the video signal breaking up, you totally lose connection to the aircraft and have to rely on return to home (which thankfully has worked well thus far). 3. Lots of little things make it feel like this is Autel's very first drone (it is not). The file counter resets every time you reboot the aircraft, so all your files will have the same few numbers starting with 0001 each day or each reboot. This is inexcusable! Also, many other settings reset with each reboot or sooner. When I turn off the visual sensor cameras, they are often on again, later in the very same flight. And as I stated earlier, they were never really off, you can’t totally shut them off. 4. the battery doesn't seem to last much longer than a DJI Mavic 2 battery, despite Autel's claims of a much longer flight time. Extra batteries are INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE! $220 is about the best you can do for ONE battery. Shame on Autel for charging so much and for out-right lying about how much flight time they get (your flight time will always be under 30 minutes while they falsely claim 34-40 minutes). DJI has several models who's batteries are about half that price. 5. They put a beautiful, bright, full color display on the remote. It can show everything including the video feed, so you don't need a phone or tablet, right? Wrong. It isn't a touch screen display! So you have to use an archaic interface to painstakingly navigate one setting at a time via scroll wheel, it takes forever. It does not appear that the remote control records flight data either, so if you choose to fly without a smart phone or tablet and you crash, there won't be any map to help you find your aircraft. Also about the use of a tablet- the clamp is too small for anything but a phone, it is made of flimsy plastic, feels like it will eventually break-off. Comparing again to the Mavic 2s, who’s standard clamps are big enough to hold an Apple iPad Mini 5- very handy and much more functional than Autel's remote control. 6. Each of my 6K video files begin with a black frame. This isn't much of a problem on the first video file, but at 4 minutes into the video, it breaks the video into a separate file, because the file sizes are enormous and many computers can't del with a 3.5GB video file. Now DJI also breaks videos into multiple files, but DJI's video files do not lose any frames, so it is simple to reconnect the files in your video editor. But remember that black frame Autel has at the beginning of each video file? Well, on your second video file (breaks at 4 minutes with no notification to you) the black frame takes the place of an actual frame which is missing, so when you want to reconnect the files from your 6K video best shot of the day, there will be a frame missing- this needs to be fixed ASAP! DJI hasn't had this missing video frame problem since the Phantom 3 Pro, 5 years ago. The Good: I do think that most of this is firmware-fixable, if they can find someone to quickly polish the firmware and get these awful quirks out of the aircraft. If they do that, they will have the best prosumer drone flying. I will tell you a few good things I did observe; The sensor system seems very advanced, better than DJI's. It is continually telling you not only that it sees those branches ahead, but also exactly how close or far they are is showing on your display and this happens even if you shut them off, unless you also want to shut off the constant reporting of how near the obstacles are. If you shut sensors off to fly, the next time you boot up, they will be ON again. The hardware is really quite nice, the orange color makes it very visible against most any background, especially a blue sky. Also, this is not a BIG aircraft as so many have said. It is just a little bigger than a Mavic 2 Pro. If you place one on top of the other and look down on them, they have the same arm span and the bodies look nearly the same size from the top. Also, Autel Evo II Pro is only about 6 ounces (0.17 kilogram) heavier than a Mavic 2 Pro- it's size is not a big deal at all. The camera makes incredibly detailed images and videos, and it gets better results in low light than any drone camera with the so called “one inch” sensor (these sensors are actually only 0.6 inch measured diagonally), even greatly exceeds the great cameras DJI had on their Phantom 4 Pro (by a lot). The aircraft lands smoothly on a surface or on your hand, when you get it down to around 2 feet high, you can feel the AI kick in and smooth the landing to perfection. For this, it is using those downward facing visual sensors that I have usually shut off- but they are clearly still ON. This aircraft is a little bit louder than a Mavic II Pro, but it is a little heavier as well. All in all, it flies pretty quietly. I pray that they will issue a big firmware fix very, very soon, I want to keep the Autel Evo II Pro for its camera, I really love this camera's 6K video! I need a way to truly shut off the sensors for fully manual and smooth flight so the camera can work the magic it was built to do.

So happy with this aircraft. This is a very nimble, capable and rugged unit. I do like the DJI pro-line drones, but there is something to be said about more heft while remaining stationary and stable in windy conditions and the Evo II just cuts through those conditions like nothing can nudge it. The gimbal is a beauty silky smooth even on snappy turns and stops. There are so many features on this drone and its flight controls but maybe some of the greatest features are being non-geo-locked, the insane amount of collision/proximity sensors and its manual flight capabilities (and some people complained about the lack of safety features. Bah! Training wheels! Let ‘er rip! I say!). Seriously, it is awesome to fly and I’m glad the focus is Flying and controls rather than the gimmicky automated camera and tracking features (even though they are there). This drone and it’s 6k sensor package make for an insane aircraft-mounted camera system that will rival that of some very expensive production level UAVs (when in capable hands). You get a LOT of bang for your buck here, but there is a bit more of a learning curve, research and work arounds with the Autel Evo II as there is not as large of a consumer-level userbase. DJI has more variety for drones, third party accessories and more software training wheel features, however Autel has being adopted for private, commercial, industrial and rescue and emergency purposes/roles taking it into some more serious professional commercial pilot territory. Honestly you can’t go wrong with either manufacture. Just do a LOT of research about the drone you ‘want to fly’ vs the drones you are interested in. If you are considering pro-level drone, look to Autel, DJI, Parrot etc.. Avoid any brands that do not have an international site or offer industry leading innovative drone technology. Generic and cheap build brands are NOT the way to go (you’ll end up limping back to a proper drone in the long run, save yourself the pain and $). Some things to note. No FPV googles are native to the EVO II’s 2.4Ghz transmission. Best bet is get a Live Deck and output to your goggles. A less optimal was is to get cheap Phone “vr” goggles or better, get a Viper FX and place your phone in there for your controller’s live video feed. Yes! the camera is good and it does very well in low light. You’ll need your phone to access the camera settings and make adjustments such as the aperture. There are some accessories via Autel such as the Rotor guards and batteries. I highly suggest guards (just a no brainer) and extra batteries just in case. Get a hard case. Protect your aircraft! Soft cases are good for soft landings and you never know!

First off let me say that I believe Autel is a fine company and makes great products. I had the Autel Evo 1 and extremely pleased (wish I hadn't sold it a week before I had issues with this one smh) with the performance of this drone and the way it flew. With the Autel Evo 2 that's just not the case. When camera was functioning properly, there's little competition to how good this thing is. However, as far as the flying characteristics are concerned I was very dissatisfied. It seems like some firmware updates enabled a better performance and then some would just completely set it back. It's very difficult to get those smooth flight motions that I was able to get with the EVO 1. I had issues also with the camera having "soft" images and losing focus, being over exposed etc. Fyi, I fly professionally so I'm experience on dialing up the camera settings but this one was too much. I think some of the drones do very well and if you aren't being demanding with what you need flight wise you will be pleased. I also would like to believe that my camera issue was just a bad struck of luck. Also, I left out that the one I sent back was my replacement for one that had a horizon tilt that I just couldn't get rid of no matter how hard I tried on calibration process. To make sure I hadn't lost my mind and forgot how to operate or use my manual settings on a drone, I purchased the mavic air 2 in which I've had no issues with camera settings, horizon tilt or flight characteristics. I think this drone has amazing potential however, I think firmware wise it's not there yet.
