  • If you go in with reasonable expectations- this is an awesome extension of your powerful PC.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this little monster. I am not going to go into the specs or everything it is capable of, you need to read that on the product overview page. But put simply, it allows you to play your Steam games on an HDTV located elsewhere- whether it be in the same room or another- as long as you have wired or wireless connectivity at both ends. I have a gigabit wired network with gigabit switches in my home. Trust me when I say a wired network will make a big difference as opposed to running a wireless network when playing with this unit. Although wireless has grown leaps and bounds over the past ten years, it is still in no way perfect and is something else to troubleshoot when problems arise in networking realm. You are almost always better going wired. First - lets start with my host computer build: 2nd Gen Intel i5 processor 3.4 Ghz / 24 GB DDR 3 RAM / RAID MIRROR / and most importantly, an Nvidia GTX 970 MSI OC edition. With that said, I have been able to play every game I have tried on the Steam Link with no complications. With games that require or depend heavily on a keyboard and mouse, there are USB ports just for those very components, and so far my wireless KB and wired gaming mouse has worked perfectly without any hiccups. There is an additional USB port for a wired controller if you so choose, but the Steam Link supports many wireless controller schemes, and I use my PS4 controller with no problem whatsoever. The interface is very simple. It boots and begins by default in what Steam calls "Big Picture Mode" I have found this to be the friendliest mode to use, especially when there are other children in the house who play. I cannot speak highly enough at how well this unit games as far as smoothness is concerned. At the time of this review, me and my youngest boy are working on Dark Souls, and it streams in 60 FPS at 1080p on my 55" LCD HDTV. There are limitations however. As one would or should expect, only so much information can be transferred at one time over an ethernet wire, and no matter how good equipment you have (I have great gigabit switches in place with large packet handling and I use solid copper Cat6 wiring. My host computer has a TP-LINK gigabit PCIe card installed) you are going to see motion blurs and fine details blur on a fairly regular basis, especially when a lot is going on in the game. It should also be noted that the Steam Link has a fast ethernet port, or a 100 Mbps port as opposed to a gigabit port (1000 Mbps) which is up to ten times faster. *Opinion Alert* Some might suggest the fast ethernet port on the Steam Link could be the bottleneck and reason for the graphics blur. Getting a stronger processor to handle gigabit speeds, along with getting a gigabit port on a new improved Steam Link means driving the cost of the unit up, maybe even considerably. *Other thoughts* When I upgraded my video card on the host computer from a GTX 770 to the GTX 970, there was a noticeable improvement in how well the gameplay translated to the Steam Link. The colors were a little more colorful- the action seemed to be a little smoother, there were noticeably finer details, etc. If you go in with expectations reasonable, this is a fantastic purchase at full price, and an absolute STEAL when they put it on sale for $35. ... show more

  • The most brilliant box in my apartment.
This is the best KVM switch ever made. As long as Steam is running on each PC, you can easily swap PC's without plugging in wires. You could stop the review there, and be done and give it 5 stars, but this is so much more for the price tag. Low latency playback, and entire ecosystem built around it for gaming (that works fantastically). This box is brilliant. It's worth the 50 bucks a thousand times over. Minor gripes: 1) There's still some steam bugs you gotta work out (and hopefully are being worked out, this gets updates pretty regularly). Namely steam occasionally crashes requiring you to run back and forth to the PC and back. It's best to set up the PC by the TV when you first get going, then move it away later. 2) It's wonky if you want to keep your PC active while using the Link to hook up a TV. Especially with multiple monitors, and especially when those monitors work at a different resolution. For me, I have a dual monitor setup with 1440 x 900 monitors, and a 4k TV. The link and my PC are capable of streaming 1080p, but to get it on there I have to go to the desktop (exiting out of Big Picture Mode on Steam), and then open monitors, set to show only one 1, and have that one set to be 1080p. 3) If your current monitors are less resolution than your TV, the link does not provide an option for adding a higher resolution. This is something you can do if you have an AMD GPU and AMD Catalyst (there's other more complex ways to do it too), but what a pain in the bum if you don't. You'll be totally limited to the resolution of your crappy monitor or laptop. This is something Valve should add in. 4) I was surprised by the weight distribution of this, but it's still not quite able to lay flat once you get all the cables into it. This is because they test them in big rooms where the cables come from up top or along the floor, rather than most home setups where the cables are going to run downward. Real minor gripe and easy to get around with a little tape. Overall love this box, would be happy if I paid 200 bucks for it. At 50 it's an absolute steal. ... show more
