  • Very High Quality Barlow, Highly Recommended !
Size: 2" ED 2x High-quality Dual Power
I used it to double the focal length of my SVbony 80ED scope, and it worked amazingly well. On the SVbony 80ED with 0.8x Flattener the backfocus needs to be around 102mm. Some pictures I took with it are shown below. Five stars !

I ordered this for my 10" DOB trust rod telescope. Well constructed product. Very happy with the quality.

  • Great views with 2" eyepieces. Borderline useless with 1.25" eyepieces.
Size: 2" ED 2x High-quality Dual Power
This review is for the 2" 2x version of this product. I'll admit that I'm new to Astronomy, having acquired my first telescope - an Orion Skyline 8" - less than 2 months ago. With that in mind, I wanted to expand the magnifications I had to choose from, so I bought this Barlow. When used with my 2" 30mm Eyepiece, the magnification is great, and views are crisp and clear. So no complaints there. Where I do have complaints, however, is with the claim that this can be used with 1.25" eyepieces. I have three 1.25" eyepieces and only one 2", so I bought this Barlow specifically because it's advertised as working for both. Unfortunately, when using the included 1.25" adapter, I can't get any of my 1.25" eyepieces to focus - even at relatively low magnifications, like 160x. If I drop my extender (35mm) into the end of the Barlow, I can get close, but then I have to switch to a different 1.25" adapter because the one that came with the barlow is designed to slide into a notch on the Barlow, so it doesn't fit well into my extender. Even worse - at that point I'm adding so much weight to the end of the scope that I can't swap between using a 1.25" eyepiece normally and using one with the Barlow unless I pull the entire telescope off of the mount to adjust the altitude trunnions, or I crank them down so tight that it's difficult to adjust the altitude on the scope. I suspect these are problems that an experienced Astronomer would have foreseen and been able to avoid, but if it's barely functional with the adapter, why have the adapter in the first place? I'm giving it two stars for not working as advertised. P.S. I've discovered in another review that I can extend this Barlow by only inserting it partway into my focuser, which may allow my 1.25" eyepieces to focus. I haven't tried that yet, so I'm going to try it. If it works, I'll update this review to 3 stars because it technically functions, but with it being such a hassle to use, I don't think anything will convince me that this Barlow is worth 5. Edit: I'm very late getting back to this, but the workaround of inserting the barlow only partway into the focuser worked fine, and I've been using this barlow ever since to get nice views with both the 2" and 1.25" eyepieces ever since. This thing definitely doesn't deserve two stars, as it's a solid product, but I'm not giving it 5 because of how beginner-unfriendly it was to work with. ... show more

  • Very sharp images and wide FOV
Size: 2" ED 2x High-quality Dual Power
Wide FOV is of course with eyepiece, but I was prepared to sacrifice it for more magnification and was very pleased that I did not lose on FOV, not perceptibly! The fit of my 2in eyepiece was very tight and I was worried the size was wrong... Had to force and twist, but in the end, very satisfactory result. ... show more

  • Bad Vignetting (hot spot in center, falloff on edges)
Size: 1.25" 3x Short Focus
I received the "new" version, but was disappointed with the vignetting. See the attached flat field image and daytime moon image which shows the (quite bad) hotspot in the center. It does provide the advertised 3X magnification, and I thought that perhaps the hotspot was an artifact of zooming my telescope that much, but later when I compared it to a 3x teleconverter I found that the hotspot was entirely the fault of the Astromania 3X barlow. If you decide to buy it anyways, note that it is "short focus" so you may need an extender depending upon your optical path to pull focus. ... show more

  • Scratched!
Size: 2" ED 2x High-quality Dual Power
It’s 3 stars just for this item not the whole store. I just received this in the mail about 10 minutes ago. Opened the package and the box was damaged, I opened the box and the lens was packaged well on the inside. However when I opened the inside packaging and took the covers off I see these scratches! I got back on here and did a product exchange and the replacement is due to arrive in just 2 days when this one took about 5. So I’m happy they expedited shipping on the replacement. The quality of the rest of the Barlow very good. Seems sturdy and well made. I can’t comment on how well the lens actually is at this time but I’m sure it will be just fine on the replacement. Over all, anything I’ve ever bought from astromainia has been great for the price. This will not stop me from buying from them. At least not yet. Update: The new one came in and it’s not scratched. ... show more

  • Astromania achieves quality and value at a modest cost
Size: 1.25" 3x Short Focus
This is a review on the general quality of astromania products. I have purchased a focal reducer, a double helix focuser, a 3x barlow and a UHC filter. The material quality of these products is exceptional, in their machanical design and manufacture. They are well built, sturdy, perform their function well, and if used properly will last at least as long as any of these products made by any top shelf competitors. That said, their actual optical performance is, in my experience ( I am a retired electrical engineer not trained in such things, however, I am a somewhat experienced amateur astronomer) adequate for my eyes ( I've used those eyes for 65 years so I've learned not to expect miracles from my optics) . However they are comparable with higher priced competitors, within my ability to judge these things. Now, if you want to compare their products with top shelf manufacturers of optics ( Astromania's hardware by itself, is top notch) costing as much as 3x's the price, they will invariably fall short. This is a comparison that should really not be made. Of course, high end optics are materially ( high quality optical lenses, and their coatings are costly) and technically (research & development costs $), labor intensive. And as much as I believe that these high end manufacturers are trying to be competitive, I am forced to conclude that there is a real gap in designed specs & cost such that a comparison cannot, and shouldnt be made. Bottom line, I am satisfied that I'm getting value for my $ . I would encourage others to as least check into their products and see themselves. ... show more
