  • Quality tool that is faster and easier than a traditional hand tool for pop rivets
I bought one of these Astro model ADR14 tools to use instead of my collection of three hand rivet tools (the traditional pliers style), because my old arthritic hands don't like squeezing the levers anymore. The tool chucks up into any drill motor, whether it is cordless electric, corded electric, pneumatic, as long as that drill motor has a slow-speed/high-torque mode that can allow its use as a screwdriver. The back end of the tool has a conventional 1/4" hex shaft, just like any screwdriver bit you could chuck up in a drill. The manufacturer recommends that for best results, a cordless drill motor should have an 18V battery; cordless drills with lesser batteries such as 12V and 14.4V, etc; will still work, but will not be able to deliver enough torque for large sizes of pop rivet, or pop rivets made of harder materials such as steel, or if they work they might exhaust a lesser battery after setting just a few rivets. The tool comes with a blow-molded case that holds it and the six included 'nosepieces" (3/32", 1/8", 5/32", 3/16", 7/32", 1/4"), plus the included small wrench that is used to change nosepieces on the tool. In a rather significant screw-up, the case is configured to precisely fit the tool with the 1/4" nosepiece installed, but that nosepiece has a shallower nut on its end, and some of the other nosepieces have a deeper nut, and if any of those are installed on the tool, it will not fit into the case; I used an X-Acto knife to carve out a bit of plastic to allow ANY nosepiece to fit. The tool has a maximum mandrel draw distance of 0.5" (1/2"). This means that in order for this tool to properly set (install) a pop rivet, there can be no more than 0.5" of the rivet extending past the materials being joined by the rivet, when you initially stick the rivet through those pieces. I should clarify that the mandrel's "head" at the end of the rivet does not count in this measurement; only the body of the rivet itself is important here. Note that Astro also has a nearly identical tool, model ADR36, which costs a few dollars less, but which is not rated for the larger 5/32" and 1/4" rivets, and its kit does not include those nosepieces. Astro's website suggests that the ADR36's maximum mandrel draw is 0.7", which is a bit longer than the ADR14's maximum draw of 0.5". Except for that, I don't see any reason to buy the ADR36 instead of the ADR14. This tool is designed for use with pop-rivets (blind rivets) made from aluminum, copper, steel, and stainless steel. The harder materials and/or the larger sizes require the most torque from the drill motor you use. The entire tool is made of CNC machined aluminum and steel parts, and it can all come apart for repair or replacement of any component, if needed. Mostly it screws apart, but at least one snap ring is used as well. In practice, you use this tool just like a traditional hand rivet tool, except your drill motor does the work of drawing back on the rivets' mandrels. Run the drill motor clockwise to draw, and reverse it to counterclockwise to loosen the internal draw chuck and drive the snapped-off mandrel out of the tool. You must hold onto the knurled body of the tool when running the drill motor, otherwise the whole tool will spin rather than draw on the rivet's mandrel. However, you don't need to grip the tool tightly, just a light and easy grip is required. I can't fault anything about this tool (except for the aforementioned case snafu). It seems to be a very good design, well manufactured from quality materials and well packaged. ... show more

  • Wow! This thing is awesome.
I stumbled across this tool while looking for for something else. This is one of those tools that you might only use a handful of times but could be a life saver when you need it. As soon as I ran across this tool, I couldn’t press the purchase button quick enough. First off, there’s nothing cheap feeling about this tool, it’s all metal construction ( in a pinch you could use this as a weapon, lol) . I ran this tool through every driver that I owned, from impact, drill and even on my little 12 volt screw driver. I also practiced riveting with my right angle flex attachment and my straight flex driver adapter for tight spots. For even more compact situations, my little 1/4 thumb ratchet also worked perfectly, so in a pinch this tool can be used with no power. I only have aluminum rivets and this tool handle them great, but my guess is that stainless rivets are going to put a lot more stress on the part that grabs the rivets. My past rivet guns would failed while using stainless, and it was always the same little gripping part that ether stripped out or broke all together. I wouldn’t mind paying extra if they provided this tool with extra replacement parts, or at least offer the replacement parts separately, but only time will tell on the longevity of this tool. I will definitely be purchasing the rest of the tools in this lineup. I will try to post pictures of all the tools as well as all the attachments that I was able to run with this tool on. Some fellow reviewers are complaining that the tool doesn’t eject the spent stud, I didn’t have that issue, ( or at least not yet ). I’m happy with my purchase, thank you! ... show more

  • Nothing but good to say
I bought this riveter as a used warehouse deal to “test” repairing aluminum side panels. The riveter had problems right out of the box. I called Astro and Nikki was very nice and immediately shipped the pieces to repair it. In the mean time seeing the quality I bought a 2nd one and put it thru its paces. I can say it is faster than a Marson pneumatic riveter and its more convenient than a Big Daddy hand riveter. It had no problem pulling 1/4” steel/steel rivets. It set shaver rivets perfectly and obviously the smaller sizes of pop rivets were no problems. I haven’t tried it on 1/4” stainless rivets yet. Like other calls to Astro, the customer service was and is superb. ... show more

Used in the field for trailer roof patches running 3/16 rivets worked well for about a week then the threads on shaft stripped returned to amazon and had another sent it didn’t last 2 days and same thing happened if it wasn’t for the thread on the shaft stripping this would be an awesome tool maybe it’s just not made for repetitive work lol ... show more

  • High quality heavy duty tool.
I shopped quite a bit before I found this riveting tool. Other drill powered riveters I saw were made of plastic and reviewers complained they were flimsy . This one is all metal and the only one I found that can set a 1/4" rivet. All the drill powered riveters I looked at have the drawback that you have to hold the tool with one hand and the drill with the other hand , leaving no hand to steady the work piece . I happened to have an extra 9.6V Makita drill I wasn't using , so I dedicated it for using with the rivet tool. I found a used radiator hose the right diameter and clamped it to the front of the drill and around the tool . Now I am good for 1 handled riviting. Dedicated rivit tools that allow 1 handed operation cost hundreds of dollars up to over a thousand dollars . And most have a maximum capacity for setting a 3/16" rivit . I haven't had this tool very long , but if it holds up like I expect , I will be very happy . ... show more

  • Works like a Charm!
After having read the reviews, I was somewhat apprehensive about buying this. All of my fears have been relieved. I use a Craftsman 20V drill. I read the instructions for how to start and how to release the mandrel...I’ve put in about 10, 1/4” rivets and it works flawlessly!
