  • A basshead's wireless gaming delight
If 4.5 stars was a thing, I'd give it that. I'm no audiophile, but using these after having my V-moda XS's I haven't had a problem with audio quality. This thing is awesome. It's very comfy, and the material won't let your head get too hot from long sessions. I have my xbone and PC on the same desk, and it connects to both wirelessly at the same time (however does need to connect to xbox controller if you want to chat, the only downside) The connections are simple. You run the optical from your xbox, and run the USB power from your PC, which you also use for a microphone, and run a 3.5mm line from your pc to the transmitter for audio. 3 cables and you're completely done setting this thing up. Plug in the short USB cable to the back of the transmitter to charge it when it's on the stand not in use. I'd recommend picking up a 6 foot amazon basics micro-usb cable so if it runs out of juice while you're playing you can plug it in and keep going. You will have to shave off some excess plastic on the micro-usb side though, just use a file or a mini-saw on a multitool. Just don't forget to update your headset and your xbox one controllers! Anyways, onto audio. I wanted surround on my PC and my Xbox, and this thing wirelessly delivers. With the aforementioned 3.5mm jack from pc to transmitter above, and setting it up as a surround connection with your audio devices manager, it sounds great. It delivers the sound I want from playing Battlefield on PC or Halo/Forza on my Xbox, big bass with nice clarity on the highs. You can use the other 2 pre-sets, 'core' and 'gaming' or whatever, but I just prefer the first one, 'media'. The other two artificially boost the mids and highs too much imo. Be sure to fine tune these even more on PC using your audio eq settings. The mic is passable. It's nowhere near the best, but it doesn't bother my friends on skype, even when I just downgraded from the great V-moda Boom Mic. You can find a lot of mic samples with a quick youtube search. There's not much more to say here. It wirelessly connects to my xbox and pc, sounds great on both, I can nearly walk across my entire smaller sized house (20-25 feet) without audio cutting out, it's very comfy for extended periods, and it just works. If it doesn't feel like it's fitting you well, try making the headband smaller, for my average sized head I made it go down 2.5 blocks on the headband. The price on these may be steep, so just be a smart shopper. Look for used Amazon Warehouse deals specifically, I bought mine in 'very good' condition for 200, and the box's seals weren't even broken! 100 dollars off for nothing wrong! Sign up for amazon cards, get the giftcards and make sure you don't use them to pay when checking out since they are made default payment options. Be a smart shopper, and enjoy the best Xbox/PC wireless setup you can buy! EDIT: With the release of Windows 10, you can join and create parties within the Xbox App on your PC. So, if you plan on gaming with a party, you can have fully wireless chat and game at the same time! Just have your PC setup like above, and start the party. You can listen to both your PC and your Xbox at the same time, so that also fixes the music snapping issue completely! ... show more

  • Halo headset
*Update* I've had the headset for about 3-4 months. Got them with the launch of Halo 5. Everything was great at first but then some issues started to come up. The first issue was periodically the headset would not turn off. Whenever you tried to power them down they would not respond. Even when I would turn off the receiver they would stay powered on. Reached out to Astro and they suggested to let them drain completely and reinstall the latest firmware. So I let them drain and installed the latest firmware. Then things got worse. The mic would barely pick up my voice. Even with the mic pretty much in my mouth my friends would say I sound distant. I play a lot of multi-player so not being able to talk blows. Another issue that came up is that when using this headset my controller will disconnect itself randomly and will refuse to reconnect. These issues only happen when using this headset. I have a pair of A40s and a few turtle beach headsets and they all work flawlessly. I contaced Astro again and they told me to send them in for a repair. I boxed them up and sent them to Astro. A few days after they received them they said they were unable to recreate the issue and will be returning them to me. I am truly disappointed in this headset. They are now simply on display with my other Halo collectibles. Amazing headset! The sound is superb. I originally purchased the Astro A40 Halo edition from Amazon. The A40s were great and I had zero issues with them but the wife and I are big Halo fans so we purchased the A50s as well. The A50s are in a league of their own. The sound is great. Plenty of deep bass and clarity. The audio is wireless but in order to use the chat function you will have to connect them to your controller. But I don't really see that as an issue. ... show more

  • Seems great but plagued with technical problems
In short, this headset is definitely not worth $300. It would be if everything worked as advertised but that is not the case. So here's the short... Pros 1) Very comfortable. I can wear this headset for hours before I need to take them off 2) I love being able to swivel the ear pieces around and lay them on my shoulder, really wish more headphones had this feature 3) Mic mute when you swivel it up and it gets it out of the way 4) Very light weight but fairly well built 5) Great sound, not the best I've heard but very good 6) Virtual surround sounds actually sounds good to me 7) Can be used while charging while via USB 8) Awesome that it can be used on PC and consoles 9) Can use the optical input at the same time as the analog. I like this because I have a bluetooth receiver connected so that I can listen to my iPad while streaming videos. 10) Love having the base to holds the headphones when not in use Cons 1) Out of the box I had issues getting them to work. I had to sync back to the transmitter twice before they would work. 2) Periodically, they will just stop responding and I have to sync them back to the transmitter 3) The mic quality is terrible. When paying this much for a headset the mic should sound far better than a $30 headset. I bought a $30 USB headset for my wife and it sounds 10x better than these. This really aggravates me. 4) When removing them from charge to use them, there is a 30 second timer until they power off so you have to start something that plays sound to keep them from powering off. This is obviously a power saving feature but should be able to be set by the user. The worst part is that when they do power off, they emit a deafening beep that is awful if you forget and are wearing them. On top of that, it plays back through voice chat software and others hear it and are deafened by it as well. Terrible design decision. 5) When the battery is running low, it emits a deafening tone through the headphones as well that is nigh on painful and again, others in voice chat hear it. What is the point of that?! It could be much softer. 6) There haven't been any firmware updates for these in years that could easily resolve some of these issues. 7) The PC audio coming through the analog jack is terrible compared to the optical input. This may sound obvious but I've never heard such a difference before. 8) Customer support is terrible. Meh 1) The voice and game adjustments are OK, but I never use them personally since I primarily use these on my PC now. This may be more useful on consoles though 2) The sound settings switch is OK but I always leave mine on full range. Again, this might be better used on consoles. So, given the fact that there are more pros then cons then my review should be higher right? Well the cons are pretty big ones for a headset that is this expensive. I have to do something to make them work again almost on a weekly basis and the fact that there haven't been any updates for these in years makes it seem like they have abandoned them to just focus on newer products. Combine that fact with terrible customer support makes me feel like that I would have a similar experience if I purchased any of their other products, so I will not. This will be my last Astro purchase. In hindsight, I wish I would have spent this money on the Blue wireless headphones. The reason for the three stars on this review is for the nice features that do work and work well but if you're looking for something reliable (key point there) with a good mic, look elsewhere. ... show more
