  • Supports ECC memory. Great BIOS interface.
I bought this board for a home server, so this review will mainly talk about ECC (Error Checking and Correcting) memory. The board itself works perfectly. I have Samsung DDR4-3200 ECC memory, two Samsung 980 Pro SSDs (for tiered caching in Windows Spaces), and 10 hard drives (6 of them on a Broadcom RAID controller). Much to my surprise, the BIOS doesn't suck. Almost all non-Asus boards I have used have terrible BIOS setup screens, which isn't an enormous problem because I spend maybe a few hours per year in them, but it's nice to have an interface set up by someone that has any clue about UI design. Gigabyte, I am talking to you. I would hazard to say that I think ASRock's is even better than Asus's. It uses some cool ideas such as providing a QR code to look up details of various BIOS settings, and it is at least as tweakable as any ROG Hero board I've owned. Nice work, ASRock! The reason I ordered this board, however, is its full ECC support. ECC is a memory technology that detects and fixes memory errors. Many random crashes and other unexplained behavior are likely caused by these errors, and because crashes are unacceptable from a server, they use memory that prevents the problem. Most boards are happy to use ECC modules, they just don't use the ECC feature. The ASRock BIOS has no ECC menu and makes absolutely zero mention of ECC. So how do I know it works? In Windows, enter this command in PowerShell or cmd: wmic memphysical get memoryerrorcorrection You will get an output that looks like this: MemoryErrorCorrection 6 That number, 6 means, that my board supports not only single-bit error checking and correction, but also multi-bit. The complete list of numbers you might see follows: 0 Reserved 1 Other 2 Unknown 3 None 4 Parity 5 Single-bit ECC 6 Multi-bit ECC (The good stuff!) 7 CRC With 8 SATA ports and two m.2 ports, this board is a great setup for a home server. I use Windows Server with Storage Spaces, which is similar in capability to ZFS using TrueNAS/FreeNAS except that it doesn't have the fragmentation issues or ludicrous memory recommendations, and it's much easier to use. You can also use Linux's very capable mdadm to set up software RAID, or use the motherboard's built-in RAID (which is also software RAID, just with lipstick). ... show more

  • The features I needed at a good price, came with updated BIOS for Ryzen 5X00G CPUs
Since I was replacing another x570 motherboard paired with a Ryzen 5700G, I needed a board with at least the 3.60 BIOS version. Fortunately, this board came with version 3.70 (I have updated to the latest - 3.90) and the system booted right up with the existing RAM, CPU and SSDs (SATA and PCIe NVME). The only thing I changed was the motherboard as I needed HDMI 2.0 and HDR support. I can't say too much about the board other than everything attached to it works as it should and I encountered no issues whatsoever in making the swap. In addition to the HDMI 2.0 support, I needed a board with 2x USB 3.x headers and at least 5 fan headers. This board had the necessary connectors as well as two M.2 (+ another one for a WiFi/BT card) and 8 SATA III connectors. I have Intel-based ASRock Rack server motherboards in my two media/NAS servers and they have been rock solid for quite some time. I have a good impression of ASRock and this x570 Steel Legend board did not disappoint. I looked at Gigabyte and Asus models as well as potential replacements but I am very happy with this ASRock board and its features for the price, Overall, this is a very solid board without being too expensive. ... show more

  • ASRock Continues to Deliver
I have owned several ASRock boards over the past decade and a half, and they have consistently met and exceeded expectations. This one is no different. Pros: Solid feature set for the price (in comparison to other x570 boards) including: VRMs sufficient for all but the highest end, overclocked 12+ core chips Top tier on-board sound Intel GB Lan (lots of sub $300 boards use Realtek) Tons of USB (7) and SATA (8) ports, and 1 USB-C Shielded NVME slot which is cooled by the nearby SB fan (many similarly priced X570 board NVMEs are not shielded/cooled) Great compatibility with RAM using latest BIOS (2x8GB 3600 CL16 runs with XMP settings stock) 6 Fan Headers (some of the similarly priced X570 boards have only 4-5) Extremely detailed BIOS for OC'ers/tinkerers Downsides: No Bios Flashback No Post Code Display (just 4 Post LEDs) Slow cold boot times compared to previous gens Not a huge fan of the camouflage aesthetic Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the board. If you're building for a 3700x or under, this is a no-brainer. While I do think that X570 prices are too high, you can't really fault the board partners for that. In a vacuum, I'm not sure this is a $200 board, but comparing it to the other competitors in the $200 price range and lower, this is one of the best values right now. ... show more

  • Great motherboard with small issues
Overall, paired with R5 3600, working all good and XMP is also working out of the box with Corsair Vengeance PRO RGB 3200, all stable with RAM. The armor is more silverish color rather than white as on photos, but also looking great. The only small issue that I've found was in I/O Shield RGB, it was flickering and even firmware reset didn't help. I've opened and noticed that connector was misplaced at the factory. So just connected it was and now all syncing good. ... show more
