  • Good lefty guitar for the money!
Color: Sunburst
Despite wide-spread insistence from various online sources that all children should be taught right-handed guitar if possible, we followed the sage advice of our son’s first guitar instructor — who recognized that he was a “true lefty” — and from the start we allowed him to learn to play guitar left-handed. He has been playing lefty for 5 years now, and we have never regretted it (in some ways it may have even been easier, since all of his instructors are righty, and he is able to watch them face-to-face and mirror their example.) The only down-side is that there are far fewer left-handed instruments out there. Not every manufacturer makes lefty versions of all their guitars, so the overall selection is limited, and what available models there are on the market are very rarely stocked in stores. Each time our son has needed a guitar we have done all the research we could, chosen a mid-priced (read: several hundred $$$) option from a reputable maker, ordered it sight-unseen from Guitar Center or Sam Ash and received a quality instrument, which has then been treated with care and respect. This year our son needed a lefty acoustic to carry back and forth to school, and while he has an Ibanez AEG that would have done the job, we were not thrilled with the idea of him hauling it around on the bus, in the hallways, leaving it in the music room, etc., We searched for a budget-friendly left-handed acoustic that could be brought to school (or the beach, or camping,) without having to worry too much about it getting knocked around, but because lefty guitars are more of a specialty item, it has been almost impossible to find one — those $50 acoustic guitars you see piled up on display in music stores at the holidays just don’t seem to exist for lefties. So when we found this Ashthorpe acoustic/electric on Amazon we figured we would order it and hope for the best, and we have not been disappointed. Honestly, for the price we half-expected some major defects in sound and/or construction, but really this guitar has neither: the build quality is solid, the neck is straight and true and the fret wires don’t stick out or cut. The sound is great both plugged in and unplugged, with a bright, treble-leaning voice when played acoustic (perhaps because the body is shallower and a little wider than some others,) and while it does not have an on-board tuner it does have a 4-band EQ that can be manipulated to achieve a wide range of tones when amplified. The cosmetics are really what give this guitar’s low price away: while the wrap and inlays are real on the neck, they are faux-finished on the body using either paint or decals to achieve the effects; the staining/airbrushing on the “Sunburst” pattern is a little uneven in places, and the glue at the joints could have been wiped cleaner in some spots. However, these are minor issues for our purposes, and are far outweighed by the overall value for what really is an incredibly reasonable price (don’t forget this also comes with a decent gig-bag, strap, picks, etc,) so still giving it 5 stars. Would highly recommend to any lefty taking up guitar for the first time, as a second/back-up instrument or as a gift for that special musically-inclined lefty in your life. :) ... show more

  • Terrible quailty "Read before you buy"
Color: Sunburst
UPDATE: I received the 2nd guitar it shipment was late. Took 5 days just to end up with this (See picture). Also the lady at Ashthorpe had the nerve to tell me I was to disguard the previous guitar & I could not donate to the Goodwill. She also told me do not buy another guitar if the replacement is defective as it may be a bad batch. The picture is not of a bad batch but rather poor craftsmanship which brings me to the lady stating these guitars are mass made & maybe I should buy another more expensive guitar. Last I checked all guitars except high end one are mass made. I bought 2 of these one was ok after much work. The other is unplayable! All guitars need to be setup but the 2nd guitar I received the bridge that holds the saddle was 0.012 oversized which allowed the saddle to flop frontward & backward & just falls out not good because over time the saddle will bend if you keep the plastic. If you upgrade to a bone saddle the bridge which is wood will crack & at that point you throw the guitar out. Tolerances for saddle snugness should be +0.002 to 0.004 not 0.012. The nut every string height at the 1st fret were so off much. 0.020 +0.004 to -0.004 is standard for nut height at 1st fret. The G or 3rd string has less the 0.010 which causes fret buzz. The D or 4th string less then 0.015 fret buzz. The low E or 6th string had 0.030 way too high. The action at the 12th fret was 10/64 on both the Low & high E string which makes the rest of the strings that high & makes the guitar unplayable past the 7th fret not to mention the Low E is always slightly suppose to be higher then the high e by at least 2/64" or 1/32". Lowering the action or string height would require the saddle to be sand down to about half of the material & the material left would leave only about 3/64" at each end above the bridge & your action height or string height at the 12th fret would still be only 7/64 low E & 6/64th high e so if you like lower a action forget it, it's not possible without resetting the neck. This also leaves nothing to adjust for the future when the body sinks. You are wasting your money on this if you get one like I did. In fact if you take it to a luthier you will be paying $600.00 or more to address these issues. A beginner & even a pro guitarist would struggle playing this guitar because it will require a lot of strength to fret single strings not to mention full bar chords. The prices on these went up from last year a lot & the price went up again after I bought mine. I will update this review after I receive my replacement & see if that has issues. The quality does NOT reflect an increase in price. Instead you have reviews saying how good this guitar is & sounds. The company keeps raising the price but if you buy this & want to return it you are require to keep the original box all the accessories & you will need to drop it off at a UPS store. Once the company receives the guitar back they may charge you a 50% re-stocking fee if you don't include everything so if you change to the lighter string gauge that's included be prepared to get charged that 50% re-stocking fee. I would truly stay away from this company & guitar if I get another one that has these or worse. You've been warned by someone that has done many setups. ... show more

  • Fun Guitar, but not calibrated very well
Color: Sunburst
I’m right-handed, but I’ve always wanted a left-handed guitar just for fun. As a cheap guitar, the action (space between the strings and fretboard) on this guitar is terrible. The guitar nut and bridge are too tall and need to be sanded down. Still, I expected a cheap guitar, and that’s what I got. If you’re a beginner, high action means that it’s harder to press down the strings. I’d just buy something in the $200 or more range, or if you’re good with your hands, get some sandpaper and MusicNomad tools and fix it yourself. You can also pay a professional to do it for you, but I don’t know how much it would cost. Other than the action though, this is a pretty decent guitar. The body is pretty shallow, but the sound is still good. ... show more

  • This is ok for a first guitar. It’s kind of cheaply made.
The guitar is cheaply made. I chose the red and black guitar. Very pretty. The first one sent to me came with a cracked neck on both sides. They offered money off. I chose to ask for a replacement as the guitar would not be able to keep a tune. Even the new guitar they sent me does not keep in tune. Not sure why. I am a beginner. I suppose it might be good for a child? ... show more

  • Very competent instrument that should keep a beginner engaged & encouraged to continue playing.
Color: Sunburst
Well made guitar & very serviceable for what it was made to be, & as it was advertised-- very affordable, & more than adiquit for newbie to start with. And it's good enuff to serve the player as their skills develope. You don't have to fight this guitar, or have your finger tips in constant pain as was the case w/ what I learned on. The guitar & accessories are a great band for your buck for sure! Almost as good as the product & price was the fact that it it was shipped & arrived 3 days early. ... show more
