  • A MIDI Controller Supreme
Color: White Version
Initially the 3 magnetic DAW overlays were missing. The seller quickly got those to me - so kudos for customer support. I have been playing piano for essentially all of my 76 years of life including 4 bands. I play mostly jazz but was also in an experimental psychedelic jam band for 10 years. My focus is playing live and recording live (instead of teasing songs into commercial works.) A while back I decided to transition from hard synths to VST. What I discovered was that my premium synths just didn't interact correctly with the VSTs and especially my DAW (Reaper, which I adore and highly recommend.) When my Korg Kronos 88 DIED, I decided to get something that really worked. as a premium MIDI controller. I play both weighted keys (bottom) and semi-weighted (upper) keyboards. With almost no training or study, this KeyLab ii 88 came up and impressed me. I quickly loaded up Omnisphere 2/Keyscape, Pianoteq 8, and GG Audio Blue3 organ into Reaper. The KL88 immediately saw them and controls them beautifully. - through Reaper! This is THE way to go. It is everything I dreamed I could do and get. And, speaking of training, the online KL88 manual explains absolutely everything and there are tons of YT vids on using it. If you haven't tricked this mad-dog controller out to your heart's content, it is just from being lazy about it. Keyboard Touch: So, KL88 won't 'flow' the way a waterfall/semi-weighted keyboard will. I play organ on my upper semi-weighted keyboard. I am a bit heavy handed and I find the touch on the KL88 to be perfect. If you aren't used to hammer weighting, it may seem sluggish and require effort. Yup, that's a hammer-weighted keyboard. It 'seems' sluggish - but it is not; It is quick, and it has that continuous feedback as you press a key. I think it is a faithful treatment of a good physical grand. I am completely happy with it. That said, I'm sure there are those who prefer something else. Cool. When this thing first came in, I set it up in my living room. When my Kronos died (as in unrepairable), I moved the KL88 to my studio. Now, I so desperately miss it in the living room, I will probably buy a second one. It isn't that heavy to move, but that is a pain in the a** to do so often. I think it is abolutely worth the price for anyone who wants top-shelf touch and control of everything except US House of Representatives. Build Quality: Well, they haven't made a keyboard like this baby since the Korg Triton. It is solid and tight. The case is metal with nice wood end pieces. I have finally gotten over wishing mine was black. I just can't read the labels or see the controls on the black as well as the white. I guess white is the new black. It <is> gorgeous. All the knobs, buttons and sliders work. Maybe the sliders are ever-so-slightly wobbly, but they are fine. I'd prefer they had a bit more physical resistance, but they are (as I said) fine. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the pads. I'm sure I will think of something fun. Remember, I play live. I sure LOVE that this weighs like half of the big synths I used to haul around and it delivers present and future flexibility - and is exciting to play. So five stars it is. Bravo Arturia and thanks. ... show more

  • A challenge... Keylab 88 mk2
Color: White Version
Where to start... Packaging, it was well boxed, protected, and clean when opened. Midi inputs have a delay on my pc, its a desktop windows machine with the a AMD 5900 12 core. The keys feel like trying to squeeze play dough into a form. My grand piano is a much different feel, its not fancy but its a piano and for comparison, the real deal push key = sound. This one is like pushing a straw in a milkshake waiting half a sec and sound. (Keylab, Kontakt, Steinberg, FLstudio) all have delays. lowering buffer just ends up with staticy noise. Did you know there is no built in arpeggiator too? As far as software, this does comes with Analog Lab 5. Some awesome instruments. BUT, should you try to open and edit most of them, you are prompted to buy them. ... ? I know, you just paid what! for the controller and it comes with software that gives you paywalls?!?!? unLUCKY You if you too bought it. Every DAW tried is a nightmare to connect. Like I mentioned multiple DAW on the midi delay... The S88 has a Cubase setting. Steinberg's Cubase 12 Pro won't connect for DAW, midi notes come through, but the record button sounds like a c2# key was pressed. And don't get me started on using Maschine with it. It does have pads and sliders unlike the major competitor, unfortunately they pads play chords or keys. You can get a c major or get a c key. Where is the ARP button? Oh, buy through the paywall and edit notes on a VST... No that is WRONG! Not sure what the benefit is, since it doesn't work with DAWs? The keys are responsive, may cause carpal tunnel if you play much given the pressure it takes The DAW is not very easy to work with Knob controls don't work well outside of "Analog Labs" Did I mention its cool to make synth sounds, but it really helps to have a DAW recording to start with layers... And the A-Live software that was included is so limited.. you get 8 channels, if you can get it to work with the DAW controls on the Keylab, congrats! Also, the plastic keys scratch easily. :-( Going to keep trying, googling, and hoping to get this to work. First impression = ::thumbsdown:: ... show more

  • Solid all around
Color: White Version
I'm not a professional musician, I got this for casual play. I have shown it to a couple of friends who are more serious musicians, and they both thought it was great, although neither of them are primarily keyboardists. I'm used to the action on a 20-or-so year old Yamaha digital piano, and I find this keyboard's action to be very comfortable and precise. The fulcrum point on the keys is far enough towards the back that it's easy enough to play in key signatures with a lot of black keys, although it's not as easy as on a Steinway D (I haven't had the chance to play on more similar keyboards to give a more useful comparison). The midi controls feel solid. You unfortunately can't assign a midi mapping to the central dial in user-mode, which was a little disappointing. It can be used to control your DAW if you use the built-in mode for that DAW, however. The wood accents aren't real wood, and they're not even very good laminate (see attached photos). This isn't the absolute cheapest 88-key weighted controller. At this price point I feel like we should at least get *good* fake wood! Doesn't bother me at all while playing though. ... show more

A completely amazing midi keyboard in every way. You notice the beauty of the keyboard right out of the package. The retro-style wooden legs separate this keyboard into a style of its own. The weighted key action is superb. Exactly the action I am looking for like a real piano. The sound library from Arturia packaged is amazing. Everything you need to get started in any style of music. The knobs and pads are a perfect compliment to the tactile control of the software parameters. The quality of sounds will impress. Best keyboard purchase I've ever made. ... show more
