This set has a good variety of brushes. Hope the company can improve glue -in bristles better because brushes do not hold up and some bristles drop off while painting.

    • Fine first brush for oil painting
I bought this set for my oil painting class and it served me well. I will say however that the bristles are on the scratchier side. So after a certain point you will find yourself working on a single area over and over because the brush wipes off the paint that you’re trying to put down. To put it shortly: These brushes are good for the first layers of an oil painting, but you will need a softer brush past that. ... show more

    • Cheaply made brushes offering a reasonably good assortment but they're STILL overpriced
First off, these are nothing close to professional brushes. They shed bristles - a lot on the first use and occasionally on subsequent uses. The assortment is pretty reasonable - several flat, several round, and two fan brushes in addition to one background/wash brush - and the stiffness is about what you would and should expect for hog bristles, but these brushes are cheaply made and do not hold their shape well after cleaning, with a few bristles fraying easily and refusing to join the rest of the herd as one tries to reshape them for drying. (It is important to understand that I am easy on brushes too, inasmuch as I clean my brushes with two washes and then re-shape them while in the process of painting - acrylics only - in order to protect their integrity and lengthen their useful lives.) I think this set is pretty pricey as well; I can get a set of 1 to 2 dozen assorted brushes that outperform these for slightly less than the $28 I paid for these. These brushes might be a good starter set for a beginner, but they are sure to be relegated to simple brushwork tasks (like blending or laying down a background color on the canvas) in favor of better quality brushes for more general painting efforts and implementation of more demanding techniques. Again, they are a bit pricey, especially since filbert and flat angle style brushes are not included and the round brushes are poorly formed with tips that are rounded off cones rather than sharply pointed. (These brushes are appropriate for use with acrylic or oil paints, not watercolors.) ... show more
