  • Great AIO in the rare 280mm variety

I upgraded from a 240mm Thermalright Frozen Notte to this and the difference is night and day. Ryzen 9850x3D with stock configuration (no undervolting) was up in the 90-95 degree zone with full load before making this upgrade, and now early results show temperatures never escaping the 70s. I couldn’t even really believe stress-ng as it was never exceeding the 60s and that almost seemed wrong. I haven’t yet gotten a chance to get into more extended use so obviously the giant radiator isn’t yet warming up, but early quick tests show that this is able to move heat off the chip very effectively. I paired this with a Thermal Grizzly PTM sheet. There are not many 280mm AIOs out there and it’s a bit of an oddball choice of form factor. This is probably the best one on the market. The reason to buy of these is most likely you’ve got a smaller form factor case that can’t do a 320mm or larger AIO. I installed this into the ssupd Meshilicious case. It’s definitely a challenge but not horrendous. You need to be in 3-slot mode, you need to remove the front 240mm AIO screw brackets, and you’ll need to pull out your center spine as well as unscrew the corners of the back of the case to allow some more wiggle room. I basically left my motherboard and GPU installed but removed them from the case attached to the spine to get the AIO in. It technically exceeds the thickness specs of the case by a couple millimeters but it just fits. Back to reviewing this item itself, some people complain about installation with the brackets but it’s straightforward and I actually kind of like it compared to the stock AMD brackets. The way the CPU block stays out of the way and allows you to so clearly see your mounting position is great, then you pop the VRM fan on top when you’re all screwed in. The Arctic manual on the website has excellent animated imagery to guide you. I am running the 3 way cable, which lets you plug in to three fan headers on your board to customize fan curve for each component of the AIO. In BIOS set the VRM fan to 40% flat, then the pump fan always at 100%, then a typical fan curve on the AIO fans. Weirdly there’s very little guidance on this subject but this seems fine enough by my estimation. My Amazon seller seemed to be Arctic themselves, and they sent me an open box item, including a bit of thermal compound leftover on the block, which wasn’t ideal, but the kit was complete so I have no complaints. This is the best cooler I have used yet. I had the cooler master 360L, for about 6-7monthd, top mounted as an exhaust in my Hyte Y60, and recently my temps started rising. After inspection the radiator had almost no water in it. So I bought the LF 280. The 38mm thick radiator is too thick for the top of my case so I mounted this as an intake on the front/side of my case. I had to reverse the fans to do that. I had to get two sent to me, as the first one was clearly used. I won’t hold that against the product, but a warning to others - be sure you inspect the product closely. The second cooler I got was brand new and works great. I have a 9700x that I’ve over clocked to get 24,058 points in Cinebench R23. When playing Arc Raiders my cpu was getting up to 84° with my CM 360L, then I tried the first LF 280 that showed up and my temps dropped to 55-58°° in game, and the brand new cooler was giving me 50-51° in the same game with the same settings. Under a 100% 148w Cinebenc R23 load I was hitting 81°, which is better than my CM 360L ever did, even on the stock cpu tune. I will say that the VRM fan is prone to ramping up even though I use the splitter cable. Noise level is acceptable otherwise. ... show more

  • Excellent AIO for high TDP CPU's - if you can get it to fit
Upgraded system from Ryzen 5900X to 9900X. I don't overclock or game much, but 9900X set for higher TDP in BIOS. Initially reused old 240mm AIO (Corsair H100i Pro). Idle temp was ~50 C and 95+ C under heavy video editing with some throttling - needed to upgrade AIO too. Pros: Fantastic price of $86 can't be beat. Same system with 280mm Arctic idles in high 30's C and only hits mid-high 70's C under same load. That's 20C cooler under load! and no throttling. Supplied fans cool fantastically, yet can barely be heard under full load (1650 rpm) The Arctic components are impressively built. All parts HD and well finished. The AMD mounting was easy to install. Out of box everything setup for top of case install - nothing to change. Minor Cons: No install documentation provided - Web only and cannot be downloaded - had to view on another device during install. My case was "approved" (Corsair 4000D Airflow), but everything was very tight. Fan wires and memory modules inaccessible after radiator in place. Hoses are stiff - had to restrain with big tie wrap to allow case door to be put back. Pump speed reporting whacky - out of box showed 4000-4800 rpm? Had to dial-in a 0.6 adj factor to get readings to 2800 max. If it will fit, highly recommend this AIO for hot CPUs ... show more

After upgrading from an i5-13600k to an i9-14900K (thermal monster), I realized my NZXT Z53 240mm AIO wasn't enough to keep temps in my comfort zone especially if I were to unlock from Intel default power limits. I needed an upgrade, but I didn't want to do so at the expense of a new case, especially because I like the size, aesthetics, and quality of my NZXT H5 Elite case. I discovered the Arctic Liquid Cooler III after hearing positive reviews from notable tech channels, particularly Gamers Nexus, who illustrated the advancements Artic made to significantly improve this cooler over its v2 model. GN concluded it runs cooler than most AIOs on the market and quieter, also the build quality was great. I agree to all these conclusions. The package includes a CPU contact frame for Intel PCs, built-in VRM fan, 38mm thick radiator (+25% vs competitors), Arctic MX4 thermal paste, and a well-built AIO unit, making this a fantastic value in an age of inflated prices. Installation was fairly easy (accept an issue for Intel users as noted below) and I was even able to top mount this 280mm Arctic cooler inside my mid-size case that was designed for 240mm max. The only issue was the VRM fan enclosure was touching the radiator fan blade just enough to cause it to clip when spinning. I used a Dremel drill to remove some plastic from the top of the VRM enclosure (no effect in functionality or aesthetics when mounted) and it cleared! Very happy with the custom fit feel. To sum it up, the Arctic 280mm keep temps about 10 DEGRESS COLDER compared to my NZXT 240mm during bench tests and about 12-14 degrees when gaming. This more efficient cooler allows me to run at a slower fan speed which improves immersion during gaming or watching movies/videos due to a quieter sound output. While I don't have an exact dB difference, it's apparent. I included a before and after photo comparing a 3 min Cinebench multicore test with my previous NZXT and the Arctic. My temps have since further improved due to applying fresh thermal paste (my Arctic unit came with slightly dried out paste) and tightening down the contact frame and cooler to the frame more than I had originally. The real reason I wanted to write this review was to bring attention to the room for error potentially leading to an insidious and often overlooked issue most users would have little idea was caused by their new cooler. INTEL USERS... simply put it's CRITICAL to tighten the screws holding down the contact frame to the motherboard enough that proper contact is made with the socket pins and the CPU. This is a challenge as Artic has NOT given any specific detail on how much to tighten these screws. Too tight and you risk damaging your CPU socket; too loose and you may experience small stutters/lag/instability during completive gaming environments like I and others have, a problem that occurs with improper installation of any aftermarket contact frame. I was disappointed that Arctic did not specify how tight to tighten these screws. At least sell or rent a tool for this specific step to give customers a way to professionally install the frame with accuracy and reliability. Performance: 5/5 Build Quality: 5/5 Sound Level: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Ease of Installation: 3/5 Overall: 4/5 NOTE: For Intel users, I can NOT recommend this cooler to inexperienced builders or those who demand absolute reliability (stability) with their rig. There's simply room for error because of the addition of the contact frame and the imprecision caused by variability on how tight the contact frame can be installed. It's unacceptable when it comes to something as important as CPU to pin contact pressure. ... show more

  • Quality product and good price
PROS: Quality build, cheap price, fans preinstalled CONS: Installation I want to comment on the installation because it’s a hot topic with this air cooler. the hardest part is easily installing the cooler to the bracket if you are using the AMD bracket (apparently instal for intel is much easier). The amd bracket is in dire need of a redesign. I watched multiple videos and read the manual on installation. Ultimately it only took me about two minutes to screw the cooler onto the cpu, so I really can’t complain too much. It requires a bit of force as well as keeping the unit aligned to the brackets, it’s a pretty counter intuitive process but thankfully I was well researched on the process and I didn’t struggle too much. Honestly all the bad reviews on installation made me worry more than needed. Take your time and watch guides on how to do it. Everything else about the installation is good though. My biggest piece of advice for installation if you’re going to buy this is install the pump to the cpu BEFORE putting the mobo in the case. This way you can easily align the pump to the bracket. Second piece of advice is you’re going to have to use more force to push it down than you would like to, it’s okay, you’re not going to hurt the cpu.   • Works well with ProArt X870E with modifications to the M2 NVME quick release heat sink
3-07-25. A Asus ProArt x870E MB went into a Sliverstome RM46-502-I 4U case, with AMD 9950X3D CPU and Asus 5070TI OC GPU. Install and configuration instructions were minimal, with no documentation on POST issues or BIOS settings for UEFI Win 11 Pro install on NVME. Internet was no help with too many variations between MFG. MB Bios was at ver. 1203, so I had to scale back install to single RAM stick, 2TB Samsung Pro 990 NVME and hoped system stayed stable until chipset drivers could be loaded. Once loaded got caught in endless reboot loop with windows install wiped out until after Wifi chipset driver installed, then Windows update took over and system became stable enough to complete chipset. Drivers install to create a stabile system. About 24 hours to get the OS stabilized. As a followup after a few weeks of use, the required low profile CPU cooler, Noctua NH-D12L chromax.black was one of the few that allowed proper 4U case clearance and air flow through case. CPU Heat pipe stubs clear case cover by 4mm. Single 120mm CPU fan and at 1200 rpm, CPU at 95C with 30 CPU threads enabled, 10% overclock and 96% utilization during an hourlong 15000 x 12500 rendering run was woefully inadequate. With these high temps using only CPU to render, an AIO will be the better choice (cost is about the same as air CPU cooler) but max width and height for rear case radiator is 333mm x 140mm. An Artic Freezer III 280 fits the case and can dissipate up to 230W according to documentation. A 360mm radiator would will not fit the case, a 240mm does not have the heat dissipation capacity. Using RTX5070Ti 16GB OC 10% with 99% utilization on GPU 58C GPU temp , CPU remained at 76C with 10% utilization during same rendering run using open CL with the GPU only render taking about 10 minutes longer to render same image. An update 4-11-25: the Arctic Liquid Freezer III 280 was purchased and installed and found that the CPU block interfered with the ProArt M2 NVME quick release heat sink block. A 0.750"x0.5" x 1.25" chunk was machined from the NVME heat sink to allow M2 quick release to clear and snap into place. The same hour long 15000 x 12500 rendering run was used, CPU at 78C max with 30 CPU threads enabled, 10% overclock and 96% utilization with max 175W reported by Amour Crate during an hourlong rendering using only the CPU. Asus tech support was made aware of the NVME heatsink interference with a 3rd party AIO cooler. Suggested fix: Since the M2 quick release is near the GPU, there is enough clearance to remove the material along the complete length of the heatsink and add material to remaining heat sink to regain original heatsink disspation.
