  • Practical looking, but less than ideal.
Practical looking Welder, fit and finish seems to be good – mostly metal wire feed mechanism is a nice touch; power cord, and the leads needed to be a bit longer like 8' minimum (instead of 6' - 6'-6"), electrode holder and ground are chintzy, with small dinse connection (10-25) – electrode holder also doesn't have indentation/grooves to restrain the electrodes. Wire welding process (Flux Core) works decent up to105 IPM on a 20amp breaker /110v supply and better at 160 IPM on 30amp/220v, but when it comes to Stick welding process neither 20amp/110v nor 30amp 220 is sufficient especially a 7018 (but you might get somewhere with 6013 but with higher than recommended amps) – as per the manual some 50amp input current is needed with is very disappointing. ... show more

  • Good welder
Works well on wire feed on 120 volt, but need 220 for the stick welding. Meets my needs. Good value for the money

  • great bang for the buck
really it is hard to say anything bad about this unit for the price...... its nice and small and lightweight so it is somewhat portable ........ much easier to get from point a to point b than a full sized welder..... im no pro and i got this so i could tinker and learn..... and so far i am pretty happy with it..... pretty easy to get started as it included everything you need to get started...... great kit for the price and hard to find a flaw in it for the price range ... show more

  • Way better than it has any right to be.
I'm somewhat sad to say that compared to my old Hobart Handler 140 (110v), this 160amp ARCCAPTAIN welder really holds its own. While my old Hobart will likely outlive this one ten times over (it's already 12 years old with no signs of slowing down) the fact is that this machine has more power, dual voltage inputs, and supports not only MIG and flux core but stick and TIG as well. And it does all that for less than half the price I paid for my Hobart 12 years ago. How'd they get it so cheap? Well, the build quality is suspect. The welder's body is made of paper-thin sheet metal, and you can tell every component and accessory has been manufactured of the lowest-quality materials they could possibly get away with. It is also amazingly small and lightweight. Great for portability, but combined with the questionable build quality it results in a welder that feels delicate and breakable. So how's it weld? Better than my Hobart, surprisingly. Please note I am judging this welder in 220v mode, while my old one was 110 only. Not a perfectly even matchup, but it's my only other point of reference. While I had some initial issues with setup (all my own fault, the instructions are very clear) once I got it dialed in it runs flux core like nobody's business. I'm a hobbyist, and flux-core is all I run, period. I don't have the space or money or desire for expensive gas cylinders and all the hassle it entails, and I appreciate the ability to weld outside in the wind, or with a fan blowing on me to clear out the toxic fumes. This ARCCAPTAIN produces amazingly clean, low-slag welds which may have been possible with the Hobart, but required more skill to obtain. The welds this gives me are smooth and trouble-free. It's also noticeably more powerful than the Hobart, not a big shocker considering the extra supply voltage and additional 20 amps output, but it makes a really big difference. It does have its limitations. The 160amp version that I received does not have the ability to manually adjust feed speed, being that it's a "synergic" type welder. While it seems that the automatic feed speed adjustment works well, there are legitimate situations that require more customized settings which this is simply incapable of making. Therefore, you have to move at exactly the speed the machine tells you. You can adjust amps from 40-160 and turn the voltage up or down slightly within a specified range, but that's it. It feels like a set of training wheels that I can't take off. Kind of frustrating, because from what I'm reading the 200amp version of this welder does have the ability to turn the "synergic" mode off. If I was to suggest a welder to someone new to the hobby, I think this could certainly be the one. I'd mainly recommend it to someone who's unsure they want to get into welding, or only has a few small projects in mind. It is so inexpensive, this could easily pay for itself if you only used it once. The problem is, I can tell it's not going to hold up in the long term, so if you're planning to dedicate yourself to welding as a hobby this just isn't what I'd suggest. That said, I got it for free and I'm going to use it til it breaks. If I haven't updated this review with news of it breaking, you can safely assume mine is still working fine to this day. ... show more
