  • This is the future - All fish tanks should be designed like this
I agree with the majority of other posters here: 1. Setup is very easy 2. Works great, exactly like it is supposed to 3. This product is very expensive for what you get - you have to purchase your own 10 gallon tank, substrate, heater, and light. 4. This is not for beginners who don’t want to learn and take the time to test water quality, appropriate plant choices, etc. That being said, you definitely should purchase a water quality testing kit that tests the pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. If you don’t, you will wind up wasting a lot of money with dead fish. Here is what I love the most about this product and why I give it 5 stars despite it being way overpriced: 1. This is not the first aquarium I’ve had and I can tell you that the garden works way better than any other filtration system out there. I’ve had the system set up for over three months and after testing the water consistently for weeks, with the garden fully stocked it has kept all of my water levels completely stable and exactly where they are supposed to be. The tank water stays crystal clear and no additional filtration is needed other than the garden. 2. Although this setup is designed for a 10 gallon tank only, it is adaptable to other tank sizes if you rig it correctly. The pump is powerful enough to where you do not need to buy an extra one. As you can see in my second photo, I upgraded my 10 gallon tank to a 25 gallon, and the powerful pump in this system works just as great! 3. It really is a great conversation piece, everyone that comes over asks about it and is interested in it. 4. I know some people will disagree with my comment here, but idc, we all have an opinion and here is mine: this garden setup makes the tank environment so stable that you never have to change the water (I’ve verified this by extensive and daily water testing). This is the best part because I hate changing water out of a tank, it’s so messy! But it’s even worse to have a dirty tank because it’s mean to the fish. But with this system, *no* water changes are needed. The only time I deal with the tank water is when I add water because some of it evaporates, which is natural of course. And in my case, I upgraded to a 25 gallon tank shortly after purchasing it, so additional water was added then. But that’s it! Fully self-sustaining, or at least so far! Update: I’ve now had this system for 7 months and I still give it 5 stars. In fact, with a little rigging I upgraded the 25 gallon tank to a 75 gallon tank and I swear the little pump built for a 10 gallon keeps the 75 gallon very clean too! I’ve had the 75 gallon setup for three months :) ... show more

  • Good starting point for extensive customization
AquaSprouts provided a useful baseline for me to get started with aquaponics. However, it can be a better value by eliminating some of the subpar accessories and drop the price down to simply reflect the base structure. I read the reviews before purchasing and already had a customization plan and expectation of additional costs -- you should too. In short, very pleased with the final results but wished the initial product was much cheaper if they excluded the "bloatware". The Basics - The AquaSprouts' tank dimensions seem specifically tailored to the ubiquitous Aqueon $10 10Gal tank. Suspect other 10Gals may have trouble fitting under it -- either too tall or too wide. - As others noted, does not come with lights, tank, or any other aquarium/gardening essentials aside from the gardening media. Be prepared to spend at least another $40-60 more to complete a basic setup. My setup: - I cycled a new tank with fish added about a month prior to setting up the garden portion of this aquaponics, just felt more familiar doing it in this order. - Walstad-style planted tank with organic garden soil capped with Flourite Black. Added a small piezoelectric airpump to pump a sponge filter and airstone on each side, mostly for aesthetics. Also added a heater. - I've positioned the AquaSprouts "backward", with the overflow lip facing forward and front of tank sticking out, instead of the default in which the front of tank is flush with the AquaSprouts structure. This makes it much easier to access the tank for feeding, cleaning, etc, since this is all sitting in front of a wall. - Velcro'd a cheap LED aquarium light to the underside ceiling of the AquaSprouts growbed. - Bought the same LED above for the garden, attached via zipties under the provided overhang. - Ditched the provided water pump because it was too bulky with unreasonably thick power cord. Replaced with 3rd party. - Ditched the provided water pump black tubing because, again, too bulky and rigid. Replaced with some clear tubing and connector. - Ditched the provided analog timer plug for smart plug, again too bulky and antiquated. You get the idea here. - Virtually every powered equipment in this setup is plugged into an Alexa-compatible smart plug input, aside from constants (heater, air pump). Was able to fit all of these on one power strip hub. All of the lighting and water pump schedules are fully automated and managed via Alexa routines. Lighting: 13 hours both tank and garden. Water pump: 15 minutes every hour, as recommended by AquaSprouts, although I span it 13 hours to not disturb the fish overnight. As you may have gathered above, I found the accessories useless/unsatisfactory and spent extra money to replace with better products, in addition to all the other stuff I wanted for my specific setup. But having put all this effort in, I'm very happy with the results and the plants I'm trying out are growing very quickly since day one, which is a pleasant surprise. ... show more
