  • Much better than expected
Style: 110 Pattern Name: Kayak
Background first - For years I had a Perception 14.5 Carolina kayak with rudder and loved to kayak the salt water in Rhode Island and nearby bays. As I got older, however, it became more and more difficult to load and unload the kayak from my vehicle, so I sold the kayak and thought that I was done. Five years later, however, I wanted to start kayaking in local rivers and ponds and after much research settled on the 18 pound Aquaglide Deschutes Inflatable 11 foot Kayak. I am really impressed with the performance and comfort of the kayak. I also bought the Aquaglide hand pump thinking that if it was difficult or took too long to inflate, I could always buy an electric pump. Well, it took only 10 minutes to easily inflate the kayak and attach the seat and skeg and I was in the water. No need for electric pump. Comparing it to the Carolina - Slower than the Carolina as expected but faster than I thought it would be. When I stopped paddling, the kayak would continue to glide for some time. The inflatable is much more stable from side to side than the Carolina. The bow seemed to move side to side a bit as I paddled, however, it tracks straight and is easy to turn. The seat is surprisingly comfortable and can be adjusted fore and aft for proper distance from the permanent foot rest. The hull is semi-rigid and when I mistakenly ran over a slightly submerged rock, I was pleasantly surprised to find no damage to the hull, not even a scratch. I keep discovering greatly engineered features. For example, in addition to the handles on either end, there is a handle in the center, which makes it really easy to carry the inflated kayak one handed to the water after inflation. No need to drag it. So yes, this is a great kayak, even for someone who comes from a more traditional kayaking background. ... show more

  • Recommend!
Style: 130 Pattern Name: Kayak
Just got back from taking this out for a couple test runs on the last camping trip and it didn’t disappoint. This was an upgrade for me from a previous brand’s somewhat more entry level kayak. And it truly feels like an upgrade that was well worth the money. Very stable and I liked that the floor is not inflated. As a single person kayaker who is extra-large, this makes sense because whenever I’d put too much weight in one spot on the inflatable flooring it would bounce up on the ends and feel unstable (and let water in). This doesn’t. I wouldn’t probably be able to stand up in it but I’m also clumsy and don’t feel like trying. It did help with getting in and out though. For my next trip I am going to pack more weight in the front for improved tracking. I’m about 3/4 of the weight limit on this thing so even with the skeg in (which is *way* easier to put on and take off than other brands) I felt like I needed a bit more counterbalance in the front. I’ll experiment with this more. Still tracks better as it is, than lower priced options, but was going back and forth a bit more than I like. If you are average size this will likely not be an issue for you. I worried about my butt being crammed in between the sides and I fit just fine; I generally wear a woman’s size 24 (us) if that helps others gauge the width of my butt (ha). The seat is great, so much better than an inflatable seat imo. I like that the kayak had something behind the seat to help with stability and so all that weight isn’t pulling on the straps with no support behind. I did buy a half-round exercise roller (18” long) to use as a foot rest and that worked much better for me than what was provided. So far everything met or exceeded my expectations. I did have to give myself a little tutorial on the valves because I wasn’t familiar with them and the air kept escaping. I just watched a video as I recall, searched for “Halkey Roberts valve”. I also bought a foot air pump and that worked well. Didn’t take too long to inflate. Just remember to account for air expanding in heat so you don’t over-inflate. Great purchase. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • Nice, light, and solid kayak
Style: 130 Pattern Name: Kayak
I’ve owned this kayak for a few weeks and have taken it out several times. I’ve used it at several beach’s/bays (salt water) in Southern California. It’s light weight, takes only minutes to setup (w/electric pump), and also dries quickly. I’m 5’11, 225 lbs and I’ve never felt like it was going to tip over or sink. The kayak feels solid and offers plenty of room with the open design. The seat is comfortable. Tracking is okay, not the best. The boat does sway quite a bit in the front for the first few paddles, but after several paddles the tracking greatly improves. I usually put my cooler bag in the front to give it some weight to help with tracking. It’s nimble and glides on the water. I’ve paddle in windy and choppy conditions and the kayak handled great. I was initially concerned with not having a drop stitch floor, but once you’re on the water the floor feels solid. The boat will drift quite a bit in windy conditions. The kayak can be a pain to put back in it’s bag. All in all I’m happy with this kayak and it serves my needs perfectly. ... show more

  • Very nice but expensive
Style: 145 Pattern Name: Kayak
I actually own 2 of these kayaks. Light weight, packs up well. Very stable in the water. Floats with the waves. You will need to buy separate paddles, life jackets, and a pump so make sure you budget that in. I bought the inflatable as it stores easily, easy to get to the ocean. It is not as fast as a hard sided kayak but not bad at all. Takes about 15 minutes to get set up once take it out of the car. At first I tired myself out trying to pump it up too fast. Over time I realized that slow and steady is better and easier. Once you are done kayaking you need to use the same pump to deflate it. The pump has 2 sides an inflate and a deflate. If you do not fully deflate the kayak you will never get it back in the carrying bag. We use our kayaks in Hilo Bay, Hi and Captain Cook bay over by Kona. Also, the kayak is wider than a hard side kayak make sure you get long paddles to compensate. The only annoying part for me is if you have a short sleeve shirt on and the top of the kayak gets wet. Your arms sometimes rub the top of the kayak causing chafing. The trick is to get a longer paddle and hold your arms up or wear a long sleeve shirt. All in all, I am extremely happy with these kayaks ... show more
