This is the most awesome tape. It is quite unique and doesn’t work like any other type of tape. It has no adhesive but instead relies on a molecular bond between itself and self-fuses into a solid permanently. The first time I saw this tape is in 1965 when my dad brought home a small strip from his work on the F4 Phantom Fighter Jets at McDonnell Douglas. This type of tape was developed for the F4. Even today aircraft mechanics still refer to this tape as F4 tape. There are many thicknesses and widths with two different styles. This style (Rectangular Type I) has a uniform cross-section while the other style (Triangular US Military Type II) has a tapered edge that when wrapped on an object with a half overlap, it creates a smooth seamless finish. Rectangular is generally used for electrical insulation while the triangular type is best at used for sealing applications to prevent liquid or moisture intrusion. This tape is medium thickness, I measured 0.032-inches by 1.00-inch wide. I tried out the tape on an electric heating controller that I keep knocking off the table. I made a bumper edge with 2 wraps of the tape. It works great. It must be stretched to activate and once cured it can not be unwound but can easily be cut off without leaving residue on the thing that you wrapped.

I use self-fusing silicone tape on the joints in my dust collection system for my woodshop. A couple of tight wraps around the joint and it makes an air tight seal. It's great for this because not only can it be a permanent seal, since there is no adhesive to dry out or oxidize and fail, but it also can be easily cut and removed. Since there is no adhesive, it removes cleanly without any adhesive residue, making alterations to the dust collection ducts easy. It's a shame this type of tape mostly only comes in short rolls, because it doesn't go far. If you're only using it for an emergency repair, or for one small project, this size should be plenty. Heck, if you need to use a couple rolls, the sheer utility of it makes it well worth it.

I'm primarily planning on not using this silicone tape unless something goes wrong with a water pipe that needs an immediate temporary repair. However... if I need it I'll be really glad to have it in my bag of tricks, thank you. I may also give it a whirl at wrapping around underground rated waterproof wire nuts as another layer of protection against corrosion of the wires of my landscaping low voltage lighting system. In my electrical use example it is only a backup, and this type of installation in my area does not require a permit so it is easy for me to use this tape and not have an inspection problem. However, UL 510 compliance is claimed in the product listing. As far as my past-professional experience goes, all rated products (and many others as well) need to be "Listed and Labeled" according to the adopted building and electrical codes of virtually every jurisdiction having authority. That is the only way that an Inspector will know that this is the correct material for its intended application. I would recommend that anyone considering the use of this tape on a permit-required activity must check with their Electrical Inspector BEFORE using the product instead of after. Since it was covered in a plastic protector all the way throughout the roll, I guess I expected this would have a sticky side. When I first went to use it, I was surprised to find that it did not. So far I have only needed relatively thin and short pieces. It's easy to cut to the desired length (or cut down the middle for a thinner piece) and application is easier than expected. It stretches easily and adheres to itself very well! While it wasn't going anywhere on its own, I did find that it was easy to pull apart and reuse or reposition after it had been applied. Really impressed with this, though I haven't used it for anything major (like fixing a leak) so I can't speak to its ability to do something like that. It's got some unique properties and functions unlike other tapes I've used. No need to worry about it sticking to anything else but itself. The only down side is that getting started can be a little tricky, because it will not stick to the surface you are applying it to, so you need to be sure to hold in place with one hand while wrapping with the other.

Silicone tape usually comes in either .5mm or 1 mm thickness. I already have the thinner tape, which is great, but I got this because I wanted to try some thicker 1 mm tape. Unlike the thinner tape, I can’t break this by pulling it apart with my hands. So I think this is a better choice for fixing leaks, especially bigger ones. But I haven’t had an opportunity yet to actually fix a leak with it. And because it's thicker, you'll need to wrap a handle or bar fewer times if you're using it for padding or to improve a grip. Other than the thickness, this tape doesn’t seem to be any different from the other silicone tape I own. Silicone tape only sticks to itself and it’s incredibly useful for fixing small leaks, adding padding and heat resistance to a handle, and holding something together while glue dries.

I have used silicone rubber tape like this for years. Although shown for wrapping for a better grip, this tape has many other uses. I have used it to repair a pin hole leak in an attic water pipe, a leaking undersink drain pipe, and a garden hose. I have even used it for weathersealing cable connections, and it works perfectly keeping all the moisture and dirt away. All the repairs resulted in a permanent fix. This tape is amazing! It stretches tight and sticks only to itself. Then over time it sort of forms a solid piece of silicone rubber. It is great for wrapping the handles of common tools because it protects them and improves the grip. The tape supplied on this order is identical to the brand name tapes I have used. Highly recommended.
