  • Style with Performance
Color: Chestnut Fade Lens Color: Cosmetan Brown Polarized
Now it's granted that American Optical isn't really a style house, and certainly not one like Hermes or Versace...but that's just fine with me. Because these sunglasses are more about classic styling and performance over fashion forward designs. Now the Alden seem to be to be a fairly new style to the AO portfolio. Typically the brand has historically skewed to Aviator style designs, which given their history is understandable. But I do think that AO has a very good entry into the space of more style sunglasses. I mean, I was getting some minor Clubmaster vibes from these frames, but only minor. Plus there's the matter of AO being independent of the Luxottica monopoly in this space, so that's something else to consider (and likely appreciate). Anyway, quality and build is VERY solid. It's clear these are premium. Hold these next to a pair of mass markets and it's obvious. Heck, hold them next to a pair of RayBans and they are better, in my opinion. Now then. How do they perform? I found these sunglasses to be very good, especially for driving. Again, not surprising given AO's history. But the fit also works well and holds true to the stated width. The slant on the lens seems to me to be a slight bit shallow from the top, but nothing to really complain about. Then there's my biggest issue with premium sunglasses, or indeed items of most types: branding. This is why I won't wear RayBans anymore...because the stupid large obnoxious RayBan logo is on every possible flat surface of the frames, even the lenses. NOT SO with these. Yes, there is branding but it is rather subtle, focused on the front of the frames in a minimalist way. A VERY small logo on the lens as well, which frankly I didn't immediately notice. As a whole, these are somewhat versatile, both from a use standpoint as well as a style one. There's a great look here with the Chestnut Fade and a blue or cream sport coat with complimentary shirt and appropriate slacks. A polo and jeans/chinos are another idea. Honestly though, if you're using sunglasses as part of a look, you're going to need several pair. Even at that though, these shades will work actually AS SUNGLASSES and not a simple style accessory. I really like these a lot. A very good product from AO. ... show more

  • Seems good quality but are crooked out of the box
Color: Black Smoke Lens Color: Calobar Green Polarized
I normally wouldn't spend this amount of money for sunglasses (call be cheap, but hey). So I was excited to get them. They came well protected in the packaging so that was impressive. But when I put them on the left temple was crooked. I was afraid I would break them if I tried to straighten them, so I had to take them to an optician and have them straightened and fit to my face. Not sure what I was expecting for this price but the quality control needs to be a bit better on making sure everything is as it should be. (it appears several other people have had issues with bent temples as well). All in all, they seem to be good quality other then they look a bit big on my face (and I thought I had a big head, lol) ... show more

  • Suitable replacement for my aging wayfarers
Color: Black Smoke Lens Color: Calobar Green Polarized
This is the second pair of sunglasses I ever owned since I retired my B&L Wayfarer II 's I purchased in 1986. My Criteria for a replacement: American made. Look good. Comfortable lightweight acetate frame. I had adjust them slightly to remedy slipping this was easy enough with a hot air gun along for adjusting the arms for a proper fit, which took 2 minutes. They fit perfectly zero slipping and are comfortable enough for all day wear the styling is classic and timeless and the polarized lenses really help out with morning and afternoon driving with the sun in your face. Great quality and stye. ... show more

  • Very disappointed
Color: Midnight Hazel Lens Color: True Color Gray Polarized
I was very excited to get these AO Alden sunglasses but my excitement faded fast after trying them on. The frames are extremely crooked on the left side so the lense literally hits my eye and they fall off of my face if I look down. I ended up being able to bend the arm enough for them to stay on my face and look a little less crooked but that's definitely not something I expected to happen or have to do with these sunglasses. They seem like a really nice quality, they're sturdy and the lenses have great visibility. The 2 tone frames look really nice and the 53mm lense width is a great overall size that isn't too large or small on my narrow face. The sunglasses come with a nice vintage looking leather case. Nice looking sunglasses but quality control is lacking. ... show more

  • classic style and modern functionality
Color: Midnight Hazel Lens Color: True Color Gray Polarized
I recently picked up the midnight hazel version and let me tell you, they've become my favorite sunglasses. I'm really liking the polarized lenses... and the style of these glasses is really unique to me... So much nicer than just your average run of the mill black frame glasses. Really good balance between classic style and modern flair. I'm appreciating the attention to quality and you can really feel the craftsmanship with these glasses. Not really screaming for attention like some designer glasses do, so I like that as well... but when you get up close you can tell they look sharp. Sitting perfectly on my face and no issues with them not staying on. I'm enjoying them most for driving and being out on the town shopping and going out to eat. I'd highly recommend these to others! ... show more

  • A bit wide, but very nice
Color: Black Smoke Lens Color: Calobar Green Polarized
Out of the box, these need to be adjusted a bit unless you have a wide head. For me, they fit pretty loosely giving me concern that they will fall off. For the price, I wouldn't want to risk that happening, so I'm going to take them to an optician and have them adjusted. Otherwise, these are very nice quality and well worth the listed price. ... show more

  • Very nice
Color: Black Smoke Lens Color: Calobar Green Polarized
These sunglasses are very nice! The quality of both the frames and lens are right up there with other high end brands I know and currently wear. These sunglasses specifically the design is really sharp, and I like the green polarized lens that come with, make the optics on these pop well in my opinion. They are definitely high quality, and I will keep them as my main or backup ... show more
