no software to program unit on the website... so far, sent email with request... hand programming is a pain. will wait for reply to email but may send it back for false advertisement... no software and comes with a cable lol.......

This is not a 70w radio. Verified by two Daiwa SWR/Power meters, power output actually measures only 50w. The max power option that you can select in the CPS is 60w. I'm led to believe that any review that repeats the 70w claim hasn't actually tested the unit or installed/used the CPS. The CPS is very quirky and takes 3x as long as it should to program the radio. ... show more

    • Good 2m mobile amateur transceiver
Just got this AnyTone UV-588MAX today. This is a amateur (ham) transceiver for the 2m band only (that is, it is not a dual band VHF-UHF unit like other AnyTone products). It comes with the usual accessories (power cable, mic, mounting bracket and hardware) but it does not include the programming cable (which I found AnyTone has not released; they expect it to become available at the end of July 2025). The construction seems solid and the fit and finish are good. The instruction manual is a step up from many others I've used. It's written in clear English and and it's fairly easy to figure out how to make changes in the radio. You can download a PDF of the manual from the AnyTone site. Within an hour of unboxing I had it programmed for my local repeater and joined in a net from which I got very positive responses concerning signal strength and audio quality, even on low power. I don't have a VHF power meter but the description claims 10W on low power, 25W on mid, and 70W on high. The supplied mic allows you to directly enter frequencies and many other settings. The buttons on the mic keypad are backlit which is a nice touch. The audio output is fairly good but is a bit muffled. I think I will get an external speaker (there is a jack on the rear panel). It works well on the NOAA weather frequencies. It also can access Airband and FM broadcast frequencies. Some things I don't like about it: -there's no dedicated squelch knob; you have to change squelch settings in the setup. There is a button to temporarily override the squelch setting. -the display is lit in red and the color is not changeable. I would appreciate a lighter background to make it easier to read the screen. -I downloaded the software to program the radio (it apparently isn't programmable by CHIRP yet). I haven't found a way to copy my usual frequency lists from CHIRP and I'm not very excited about entering them in by hand. In any case, as I mentioned above, I don't have the programming cable so this is a moot point for now. Other than these relatively minor issues, the unit seems solid and works well.
