  • I use the 80x with middle and high school
The higher 80x power is a little tricky for younger kids. I use the 20-40x scopes for them. The higher the power, the smaller the field of view and the more patience it takes to get things in focus. This scope cannot easily be changed from a 20-40x to a 40-80x. You have to take out some very tiny screws to change the occular lenses. (It is not something you want the students doing all the time, since the screws will certainly get lost in the process.) Since I own 8 of these scopes and use them all with 20-40x, I bought this scope to be permanently set on 40-80x. If you are working with multiple students a lot of the time and want to offer the higher magnification you might want to consider doing what I did and having some scopes devoted to the 40-80x. However, I must say that for most things, the 20-40x is plenty of magnification for students. You can really see a lot at 40x! So if you just want a good basic choice for classroom use, save your money and just get the scope with the 20-40x. One feature that this particular scope has is the rechargeable batteries. But you can also use regular batteries. My other scopes just use AAs and they last a long time. I love having them be cordless. Also I like the cool LED lights. The lights on my old plug-in scopes used to get dangerously hot. These LEDs are super safe. ... show more

  • Excellent Stereo Microscope
I read all the reviews on this Stereo Microscope before buying including the negative reviews. My unit arrived in perfect condition after just a few short days and I couldn’t be more pleased. The quality of the build is top notch and the LED light controls are wonderful. I use it for Philately (Stamps) and the quality of the image is exceptional. Some reviewer complained about the difficulty of changing the eyepieces because of the screw size. If you remove the screw I could see their consternation but removal isn’t necessary, just back it out slowly until you can remove the eyepiece without fully removing the screw. Insert the new eye piece and retighten. I was able change out eye pieces in less than 2 minutes. One also complained about customer service with AmScope. I contacted them because I decided I wanted the ability to achieve 10X magnification. I contacted AmScope via their website and within 4 hours I had the part number to order for the 5X eye piece. My experience was perfect. The other thing I really like about this unit is that the LED lights can be plugged in or run on battery so the unit is very portable. Now I just have to decide whether or not I want to order a USB camera - still researching this as they have many options. ... show more

  • Good for insect ID
I'm using this to ID insects, and it works fairly well. The focal range is very short, so I have to constantly be adjusting it, and the zoom is a little TOO high for larger insects, but overall it works fine, gives me a clear picture, and is at a very good pricepoint for a stereo microscope.

  • Impressed
I bought this one after waiting for nearly 15 years as I was so much interested to own a stereo microscope since my school days. This amscope product is a sturdy equipment with an excellent finish. I was really surprised to see my own hands under this microscope. Also I enjoyed looking at various specimens. Its input power is 110-240V AC, so it can be used anywhere in the world. It was absolutely a worthwhile purchase for a hobbyist like me. ... show more

  • Excellent
I'm very happy with this scope so far. An interesting thing happened, in my case. The picture shown here on Amazon, and the picture shown on the Amscope website, and the scope in the video on the Amscope website that shows the operation, all show the lighting controlled by two rocker switches, one is on-off and the other selects whether top light or bottom light, no intensity control. The scope I received is the same model number, but instead of the rocker switches, it has two rotary switches, one for top light and one for bottom light, and each switch rotates from off to high and controls the light intensity of both lights, and, if so desired, both lights can be on at the same time, though I can't imagine when I would want to do that. But it was a happy surprise, I suppose they have updated the model, but they haven't changed the pictures, even on their own website. Interesting. Anyway 5 stars. So far. One small amendment: Those tiny screws you have to remove and replace to change the eyepieces are a pain, However, it's a small price to pay. Still 5. ... show more

  • Fantastic microscope!
The microscope is awesome, it's an experience looking at insects through it. Originally it arrived missing the 20x eyepiece set. I was able to eventually email the seller and once the email was received it was less than an hour to resolve. Their support was good.

  • No manual
I gave 5 stars for all of the features, but an overall rating of 4, which should be 4.5. That there is no printed manual doesn't bother me, but the fact that the PDF manual that I downloaded does not include the features of this upgraded scope. Luckily it is easy enough to figure out how to swap out eyepieces, replace batteries, and operate the dual knobs for the lights, but still. How much effort/expense does it take to update a manual for new models? ... show more

  • Great microscope, but be careful with seller
Great microscope! Easy to use and great optics. LED lights are bright and give a nice white light. The rechargeable batteries make it portable and the charger tells you when they are finished charging. The only strange thing is that you can't use both the top and bottom lights at the same time, although I don't know when you would want to. A note on the seller: don't rely on the product descriptions on Amscope.com - many of them are inaccurate and they won't refund shipping costs ($30 each way for a microscope this size) if you buy from Amazon and return it because it didn't match Amscope.com's product description. Ask them first to see if their products actually have the features they advertise. ... show more
