  • Better than expected, hopeful it'll last a while
Style: Keyboard only (1-Pack)
I've been burned by keyboards in the past. I spend most of my day on my computer, so I'm constantly pounding away on a keyboard. I've bought $80 dollar products, I've bought $40 dollar products, and you know what? They wear down equally fast. So I thought, if I'm going to play replace the keyboard every 12 months no matter what, why not save some money? So I got this one. First impression after taking it out of the box: "Wow, shiny." Not used to a gloss finish on a keyboard, so it was a bit of a surprise. It looks nice, until it gets smudged up, then it's just plain ol' hard to clean. So that's a bit of a downside for this. First impression after starting to use it: "Wow, clicky-clacky." If you need a stealth keyboard, this is not it. This is the kind of keyboard they use to record typing sounds for TV and movies. It definitely says "someone's typing!!!" with all three exclamation points. Now, to the finer details. How is it for actual typing for someone that can touch type at a decent wpm? Surprisingly good. Normally there's that transition time between using one keyboard that you're familiar with and a new one. With this keyboard, there was no transition time, even though I was going from a keyboard with deep keys with deep indentations, while the AmazonBasics keyboard has shallow, nearly flat keys. That tells me some thought went into the exact angle and spacing for these keys to be ideal for a standard keyboard layout. There is also some resistance from the keys. Not that you have to be Hercules to press them, but it gives a perfect amount of tactile feedback to know you've pressed a key and a perfect amount of resistance to keep accidental key presses to a minimum. Now, about that angle... it's built in. Unlike most keyboards that come flat with those little feet at the top end that you can swing out (and hope not to accidentally knock off every time you pick the thing up to clean it or around it or under it), this keyboard has that angle built right in, with some nice rubber strips to help the keyboard from sliding off into the sunset while you're left looking like a cat is walking on your keyboard. So if you don't like a slight angle while you type... I'd suggest you try this anyway, as it's perfectly comfortable, whether you're using a wrist rest or not. (Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't). Cord length is a little short, I had to plug it into a USB hub to get it connected. Probably just the manufacturing process trying to save some pennies on manufacturing costs. If you don't have your computing unit nearby, I'd suggest buying an extension cable if you don't have one, or plan on putting it into a hub if you have one of those instead. The little lights for those special keys (num lock, scroll lock, caps lock) are actually on the button themselves, which I think is a good touch. They're green, and not terribly bright so you're not illuminating your whole room like it's a set that's been doused with ectoplasm in a Ghostbusters movie. It's also easier to tell you have it on because it's right there instead of some arbitrary location. The hotkeys are not plentiful on this, nor are they customizable. You get function key (Fn) and your last track, stop, play/pause, next track buttons are the F9 through F12 keys used with the Fn. Next to it is a single-press media player key, then a key that will pull up your File Explorer (for Windows). Then, in lieu of those arbitrarily placed LED lights, you get mute, volume down, volume up, and calculator hotkey above the number pad. I personally LOVE having that calculator hotkey there because I find myself needing to do some quick calculations and that saves me some time. In the end, I think this keyboard will do nicely. My hope is that it will last the usual 12 months of abuse that I give keyboards. I'd definitely say it's worth a shot if you're looking for a low-cost alternative to all those fancy ones out there. It's basic (but hey, that's the brand identity, right?), but it most certainly gets the job done. Note to the AmazonBasics designers: next version of this, for the love of all that's 8-bit, lose the glossy finish! ... show more

  • For the price, it can't be beat!
Style: Keyboard only (1-Pack)
I'll start out with the caveat that I've only had this a few days so I can't comment on its durability but this is a really solid functional keyboard for those who don't care about having wireless and are ok with a low profile chiclet style keyboard. I personally wanted wired as I periodically have issues with wireless and this will go on my work laptop which sits in a dock so I have no real need for wireless as it never moves from one spot. I started using these low profile chicklet keyboards because I was switching back and forth between my laptop (which has a siilar KB) and my desktop with a more tradition design KB and I was having issues typing as quickly because the difference in key height/spacing. I had switched to a very well-known name brand keyboard that is similar to this at 8 times the price (granted, it has some "frills"). It lasted about a year before one of the keys broke and I couldn't fix it (I'm pretty handy with all things computers). I have another of the name brand ones and while it still works fine, the "a" and "s" characters on the keys are rubbing off after just 1.5 years and the manufacturer has no interest in fixing what is obviously a defect. I'm done paying big money for keyboards! Rather than shell out another $80+ dollars, I decided to give this one a try figuring if it wasn't any good, it could be my spare. I was pleasantly surprised on how close it resembled the spacing and layout of the one it replaced and it feels great when typing. It doesn't have some of the frills of the more expensive KB's but it has volume and media buttons along with a few other application buttons like calculator and media player. Some have complained about the amount of noise the keys make. These aren't any noisier than a lot of other keyboards. Note, the noise comes from the spring return of the key after being pressed and not the annoying loud CLACK CLACK CLACK you hear from "mechnical" keyboards depending on the switch type. If you need a truly silent keyboard, this isn't it but if you work in an office with some ambient noise, no one is going to complain about the sound. The tilt angle is not adjustable and it is somewhat flat but even expensive keyboards like the one I just ditched only have 2 adjustments - flat and angled. I certainly think it's angled enough for comfort, it just may take getting used to it for some. In summary, if you need a basic keyboard complete with number pad and you are ok with it being wired (USB), don't waste your money on big name brand versions unless they have some functionality you can't live without (most are gimmicky anyway). Here are some points to consider when buying (these may be pros/cons depending on the individual): > Not wireless (USB) > Doesn't need batteries (because it's not wireless) > Not silent but not noisy either, if silent typing is needed, move on. Louder than the typical laptop keyboard. > No backlit keys > Full number pad, function keys and extra function buttons (calculator, media player, media controls, etc) > Caps/scroll/num lock lights are present > Non-adjustable tilt height > Low profile, chiclet style keyboard > Very inexpensive! > Suface around keys is shiny and prone to fingerprints/smudging (for you OCD types) > Cable is average length (~48"), may be short for those who have to route it way over the beck of the desk and down to a PC > Has an overall inexpensive but not flimsy feel > Has an Amazon basics logo on it (for those who are brand sensitive). Nothing a sticker can't cure if it bothers you. > No fancy features like programmable keys, scroll wheels, wrist rest, etc. ... show more
