Description

A NEW YORK TIMES TOP TEN BOOK OF THE YEAR A WASHINGTON POST NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE’S TOP 10 FICTION BOOKS OF 2024 ONE OF NPR’S “BOOKS WE LOVE” 2024 NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY: THE NEW YORKER ● VOGUE ● FINANCIAL TIMES ● OPRAH DAILY ● VULTURE ● VOX The New York Times bestselling author returns with an irreverently sexy, tender, hilarious and surprising novel about a woman upending her life “A frank novel about a midlife awakening, which is funnier and more boldly human than you ever quite expect . . . nothing short of riveting.” —Vogue “All Fours has spurred a whisper network of women fantasizing about desire and freedom. . . . It’s the talk of every group text."—The New York Times “All Fours possessed me. I picked it up and neglected my life until the last page, and then I started begging every woman I know to read it as soon as possible.”—The Cut A semi-famous artist announces her plan to drive cross-country, from LA to NY. Thirty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she spontaneously exits the freeway, checks into a nondescript motel, and immerses herself in an entirely different journey. Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman. Once again, July hijacks the familiar and turns it into something new and thrillingly, profoundly alive. Read more

  • Strap in, this is a roller coaster ride!!
I just finished and my immediate and final reaction was “WOW.” There were parts of this ride that seemed ridiculous and uncomfortable (TMI!). I love that this book is anything but predictable, there is no tried and true (and as such, tedious) formula here. This book is a free fall, zero to sixty love song and prayer to aging womanhood that I am totally relating to as a 56yr old woman. I has me celebrating that all of those gender-related norms and expectations that have chaffed me since childhood are finally in the rear view mirror (f’you and good riddance, lol). This book stuns and celebrates that, for the first time in life, menopause frees us to simply live and prosper beyond gender, as the legitimate and valuable and gloriously imperfect creatures we are. Borderline exceptional! I can’t wait to see what she writes next!!! ... show more

  • Excellent writing and thoughtful exploration of middle age.
The best book I've read all year. After a few disappointing "best-sellers" and recommendation, this was a breath of fresh air: So well written and insightful. The author's exploration of middle-age and female sexuality kept me turning the pages. I would have given this five stars if it wasn't for the non-gendered child - annoying, confusing at times and superfluous to the story. ... show more

  • torn
I think there are important and interesting elements to this book particularly for women in their forties or approaching their forties. But I found my intense dislike for the main character distracting and found her to be obnoxiously self absorbed and far too congratulatory of her own genius which I saw no particular evidence of. ... show more

  • I bought it for all the women in my life
I picked up “All Fours” with no real expectations other than thinking it would be a sexy read—I’d read a mention in New York Magazine’s “Sex Diaries” and figured it’d be light and provocative. But this book turned out to be so much more, an unexpected exploration of womanhood that caught me off guard and stayed with me long after I finished. At first, I honestly didn’t like the protagonist or the plot. The narrative felt intense and even uncomfortable, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to keep going. But by about a quarter of the way in, something shifted. The author tapped into a kind of raw honesty that I didn’t realize I needed to hear. She captured feelings and experiences that I think many women would understand or relate to, but, if you’re like me, don’t always know how to put into words. “All Fours” became a mirror, reflecting parts of myself in ways that were both surprising and reassuring. It reminded me of the power of reading, of how a book can help us recognize pieces of ourselves in people we might initially feel we have nothing in common with. By the end, I was grateful for the journey, and this unexpectedly powerful story about rediscovering and returning to self. ... show more

  • Disliked the main character
This book was a suggestion to me by another popular book store company based on my past book purchases. I purchased this book on Kindle for my vacation read. Being 48 and a mom of three, I thought I might be able to relate to the main character and the description was interesting, but I certainly can not relate to this character. Initially, I was put off by the raunchy sexual commentary. I did not find it sexy, I found it gross. I found this main character to be incredibly frivolous and selfish, not to mention a bit idiotic. She made bad decision after bad decision and I just could not understand the point. I just really found myself disgusted with her and could not finish the book. I regret the purchase. ... show more

  • A very good read, a lot to take away
This book was well written and it made me think deeply, which in my opinion are defining features of a really good book! But, as a 58 year-old mother of two who gave up a career to stay home with my now successful kids (relationship and career-wise), I’m sensitive to the idea of prioritizing my own self discovery when a child is involved. It would make my kids pretty insecure if I was still groping for adolescent experiences at 45 years old. Her kid was definitely secondary to her willful and frenzied attempt to find out more about her own sexuality. I get it, it’s a time of hormonal change and there’s a natural desperation to relive all the experiences you never had or may never have again. (Your eggs ARE dying, after all…). I’m glad she figures out her sex stuff, though, that’s so so important. But at the end of the book, not much mention of how her child is doing? Were they/them okay and thriving? I certainly hope the corners were all working out. So I took a star to give to her little kid. Fly to the moon. ... show more

  • Funny, raw, and hard to put down!
Miranda July at her best! This is funny, raw, and hard to put down. She narrates the audiobook version so well and it was a joy to listen to. Highly recommend. An important and unique point of view.

  • Not interesting enough to finish
I feel compelled to finish a book I've started. Not this one. Once the shock value (which I suspect was the author and publisher's goal,) wore off, very early, it was simply a boring book. No character development, no story arc, no plausibility, and a protagonist not interesting enough to make you care what she does or what the results are. Time wasted when I could have been reading something interesting. ... show more
