The suction power is fine, the problem is the filter only catches large materials and all the finer debris pass straight through and go back in the water. Even after leaving the unit to cycle the tank for an extended period, all that is caught in the filter is pieces of the aquarium gravel. The water only gets more cloudy as the debris is sucked up from the bottom and dumped back into the tank. You also could not use this unit to completely drain a tank because the motor unit must stay submerged and is a good 10 inches above the end of the suction tube. ... show more
