Just as the title says - this is a great book if you are trying to update your kitchen on a small budget. If you have $10,000 to spend on your kitchen, get shiny book and a pro. But this is perfect for the average American trying to redo a kitchen without going into debt. worth the money for STEP-by-STEP detailed directions on lots of kitchen projects! also LOTS of beautiful photos. Perfect for novice or intermediate DIYer looking to tackle kitchen project(s) I purchased it specifically for the section on upgrading stock cabinets. It has excellent step-by-step directions about how to turn a basic cabinet door front into a glass panel front. As we are planning to do all the work ourselves when redoing the kitchen, this book is going to be well used and earmarked. Some of the suggestions we had already thought of......replace light fixtures and door pulls to revitilize on a tiny budget until you can save more. But lots of innovative and interesting ideas also, on how to improve function/storage without a total remodel. It has everything from the simple: replacing door pulls, how to replace/repair drawer glides to the more complicated - how to install new flooring, tile backsplash, countertops, make an island, add electrical outlets. And as I said above, beautiful step by step directions! We laughed a little over some - "squint carefully as you clean grout to make sure it is even", but I would prefer too much information over the assumption that I know something. Chapters include revitilizing cabinets, storage ideas, backsplash upgrades, countertops, sinks/faucets/installing garbage disposal/hotwater dispenser, lighting/electrical upgrades and flooring. While it is not a design book per say, it does have beautiful color photos and lots of ideas and pro/con lists to help you make the best decision. Most useful book I have found so far. ... show more

Love this book. I found it in a bookstore and then used my amazon app to find it cheaper there. This book has tons of ideas on what to do whithout a ton of cost. When I presented ideas to my husband about what we could do I couln't explain them very well. With this book I could say, here this is how we do it. This book is so worth the price because even one project is worth it, but so far we are up to 3 and counting. So helpful with pictures. ... show more

The authors explained what constitutes a major kitchen renovation (remove walls, remove soffits, move plumbing or major gas/electric appliances) and offered explanations for minor remodels. Like many other remodeling sources, many of the kitchens pictured didn't look like they started out as the typical, small, eight foot ceiling, builder grade kitchen I have - so many examples just aren't applicable. ... show more
