These weights are great for working your way up gradually, and good for someone just starting to build strength. You can adjust them a half pound on each side easily by simply sliding and clicking into place. You could just go up a half pound if you wanted, just the weight would not be balanced. I did find them a bit bulky compared to traditional weights I have. They come with a bag to store the extra weighted pieces in when not attached to the weights and that is helpful.
