These are, indeed, wide width shoes as is indicated on the tag which reads "Terrex Ax4 W" (W = wide). I don't always wear wide width shoes but when it comes to a shoe that I'll be hiking in, or standing and active in, for long periods of activity, I tend to choose wide width shoes because my feet swell. Having a wider width accounts for that expansion which leaves my feet plenty of room for comfort without the added discomfort of all-around pressure on my swollen feet. While they're a bit roomier in the toe box due to the wide width (which I happen to like because again, my feet swell during activity), they still work for my narrow feet regardless because they're lace up shoes that I can just cinch up to my liking anyway. Hikers are generally always a tad wider than casual shoes to account for these things, as well as heavier socks. I just went on a big hiking trip and brought these for trail running but ended up using them for all my challenging hikes. My hiking boots were too painful and these were so comfortable, breathable, flexible but had great support. They aren’t the sexiest shoe but they do the job. I plan to get the hiking version of the sneaker. They are still 10/10 trail running shoes. But additional ankle support for hiking would benefit the hiker. ... show more

I usually hike in Hoka shoes, but wanted a shoe with better traction in mud since I hike on hilly trails that become a slip and slide during the winter rains.
