    • A Good Choice for Beginners, With Some Caveats

I’ve been looking for a set of acrylics that’s reasonably-priced and reasonably-sized as I ease my way into painting. First impressions of this set are good, overall. Let’s go through part-by-part to see what works and what doesn’t. Canvases: There are five of these, two of which are blank and three of which have pre-printed scenes; think of the latter as almost a paint-by-numbers minus the numbers. At first, I was a bit irked not to have more blanks, but then I realized that there’s use in the pre-printed canvases if, like me, you’re still learning what the different brushes do and fine-tuning your brush control. Quality here is identical to any other cardboard-backed, pre-primed canvas you’d find at stores like Michael’s. Palette: Thin plastic, with wells that are deep enough for a bit of mixing; there’s a handy thumb-hole so you can keep it steady while you work. Here again, if you’ve ever shopped art supplies, you’ve seen this palette or one like it. Pad: Relatively thick paper. However, it’s highly absorbent, and seems like it would do better for pencils, or even watercolors, than it did with the acrylics. Brushes: A better variety, and of better quality, than I was expecting. I can’t tell if the bristles are natural or not, but they’re more supple than some I’ve used, and there’s a good variety. Furthermore, they’re nicely balanced, with substantial wooden handles. Easel: This is essentially one of those metal plate holders. Although it turned out to be far more stable than I was expecting, I was never 100% comfortable using it. You may want to either paint on a flat surface, or spend a bit extra for a higher-quality easel. Paints: These are the star of the show, and on the whole they’re pretty good. I found them slightly thinner than the Liquitex I’ve used, or a set of Faber-Castell I was trying out concurrent with these. However, they’re higher-quality than craft acrylics, or the small paint pots that come with some sets for kids and beginners, with good coverage and vibrance. I got this set through the Vine program. Would I have been disappointed had I paid full price? I don’t think so; I can see where even some things I thought I’d be disappointed in can have their uses. I don’t know that I’d keep buying some of these items, like the easel or the pre-printed canvases, but they certainly have their use when you're just getting started. Furthermore, the quality of the set overall is such that, when the time comes to replenish my paints, brushes, and blank canvases, this certainly isn’t a company I’d shy away from. ... show more
