These are comparable to the paint brush variety packs sold locally at craft stores except those tend to be half the price. If you're set on these then they are an ok choice for a beginner. I like to keep some flats like these on hand for sections that don't need detailed coverage and tasks that tend to be hard on brushes. I'm not a particular fan of the handles. Long and light with a plastic feeling matte finish that is not chemically protected so be very careful with cleaning supplies as they damage easily. I have been a part time professional artist for about 20 years. I use these in my studio for oil painting. Yes they are not the most expensive or top-of-the-line brushes you can buy. But...they do their job and they do it well and are a screaming deal for the cost. These are bristle, so they leave a very defined mark on the canvas...meaning they are not smooth, or do not blend well like a soft hair brush. But most artists learn this very quickly. Bristle cleans better than most soft hairs but they also discolor very easily. That doesn't mean they are ruined or need to be thrown away. They will still work for a long time! These would be perfect for beginners. They aren't the best...but they are still great brushes. I use them all the time! Give them a shot! ... show more

This is a set of value-line brushes that are perfect for use in projects where you don't want to burn up your "A-Game" brushes. These natural hog bristles are better than artificial bristles, if used carefully these brushes will hang in there far longer than you would expect. I've used these brushes for acrylic paints, not for watercolor, but they are fine for the acrylics. The brushes do shed a little but not overmuch. They are easy to rinse clean. The handles are very light. The description says they are birchwood, but they are painted matte black so I can't honestly confirm that. It's a wide range of sizes, but realize that none of them will give you a fine line. Likewise, the stiffness of the bristles means you have a little less control. However, I'm not complaining, I think they are reasonable at this price point and would be a nice selection of sizes for a beginner. ... show more

beware -DO NOT BUY!!! garbage. upon receipt, brushes had beautiful chisel tips, which turned out to be shaped that way with hard glue. After the glue washed out, the tip spread out like an old beat up brush. I tried to use it with oil paint - you can see there isn't any way you can get a decent brush stroke with these spikes going every which way. Oh, and as for returning.... read small print. You have to return in "Original Condition". Since I dipped 1 brush in the paint, the condition is no longer "Original" ... show more

The bristles are good. Cleaning this brush after use with oils is entirely different matter. Though really like how this handle works. cleaning of bristles and Winsor Newton brush restorer getting onto handle disolves the handle. This is not strong solvent. It appears the paint on handle is some form of plastic paint that easily disolves. ... show more
