  • I'm going to convert all my vehicles to Na-Ion even if just for the temperature range!
TLDR: Na-Ion is Better in every way except capacity for the same space. CCA is excellent and you don't have to worry about battery damage from discharge, storage, cold or heat (within its specs). I did some interesting research about Sodium-Ion (also called Na-ion as Na is the chem symbol for Sodium). They have a wide temperature range (this one quotes -40 to +80C, and most Na-ion car batteries go to at least +60C), are very light, and last for many thousands of cycles without fear of being ruined from over-discharge or heat. Note that Na-Ion generally has fewer Wh (or Ah) of energy storage and this one is also the case. This means the battery won't power things for as long as a new(er) Li-Ion or lead-acid (AGM) battery. I'd argue that issue is unimportant, is a vehicle recharges the battery. And, unlike the other chemistries, being run down won't damage sodium batteries, so you just boost it up again and you are back running with no concerns. As an added bonus, you can tell the state of charge of a Na-Ion battery by just measuring the voltage, as its voltage drops pretty linearly as you discharge it. It took some searching, but it appears these batteries are made from 4, "3V" cells. The cells are typically good for up to 3.9V each, which should put the max on this battery at about 15.6V. This is well in excess of what is needed for any charging system for standard AGM/lead-acid batteries, and the battery will probably hold this higher voltage as well if it is not being heaviliy drained. This means you don't need a fancy battery monitoring system, they basically can drop into where your old AGM/lead-acid battery was. If you are familiar with capacitors, they act more like capacitors than batteries (with a HUGE energy storage compared to a capacitor) and a cost similar to LiIon without the other drawbacks. The attached pictures give you some technical information, the box it shipped in and its markings, the battery size and markings on it, and finally a measurement with a combination volt and mili-ohm meter to show it has low (about 0.013 ohm) internal resistance (a good thing). The voltage shown on the meter is what it read when it was delivered, and translates roughly to a 65 to 100% charged AGM battery (12.69V). The reason 12.69V is a range of charge levels, is that there's a bit of variable opinion whether an AGM battery is full at 13.0 or 12.7V, but they basically ship "full" as the spec for AGM/lead-acid goes. Note also, one reason the capacity is rated low, is because they rate it at that 12.7V range. As mentioned earlier, the battery should support the full charge range, which would translate to more energy storage (though even that is a less compared to the same size AGM/lead-acid or LiIon battery). I still think the tradeoff is worth it, but now you should be able to decide what is best for your own needs. ... show more

  • Battery performs as advertised
The media could not be loaded. I always wanted to experiment with a Sodium-ion battery, (Na-ion) so when I saw this battery available, I ordered it immediately. I build a lot of projects using LiFEPo4 and Li-ion batteries and always wanted to try one of these. I figured I would use it in my lawn tractor, then maybe try it in some solar projects. About 5 seconds after I ordered this battery, I realized it probably has different charging requirements. I'll get back to that. I installed the battery in my tractor, and it performed extremely well. I removed a lead acid battery that is about twice as large and much heavier, and this tiny battery cranked the engine no problem, as well as the lead acid battery. (I disconnected the ignition to show the cranking speed, otherwise the engine starts instantly) After this test, I immediately removed the battery, and it was still showing 12.59V DC. I had not charged it since receiving it, this was still the charge that it came with, minus what was used cranking the tractor engine. I removed the battery because it is not compatible with my tractor charging system, and after checking my numerous battery chargers (Li-on, LiFePo4, AGP, LA) I realized I had no way to properly charge this battery. I also have no solar charge controller that is compatible. I did a LOT of research on the subject, and a Na-ion charger is hard to find and expensive. Now all of that is MY fault, not the batteries' fault. The battery performed exactly as advertised and is a very good item. As far as a solar project I am concerned about the mere 4¼Ah capacity, that is not going to run much for very long. BUT, it definitely cranks a small lawn tractor engine no problem. I can't comment on longevity of course. ... show more

  • Light weight, terminals need improvement.
So far this is working great for my motorcycle. It never failed to start with my old battery, but sometimes it would crank slow for a second but still start, but when it would do that the clock on the instrument cluster would reset. So far that has not happened so this new battery seems to have fixed that. It is crazy lightweight, it is 2 pounds 10 oz or 1193 grams, compared to 6 pounds 14 oz for my SLA that it replaced. I have knocked a star off for one simple reason: on most batteries the terminals have a slot that holds a square or rectangle nut that ideally fits snuggly so it can't fall out and won't require a wrench to hold it while tightening the terminal screw. This battery came with a standard hex nut that had tons of room to move around. Once that battery was in place there was no room for a wrench to hold it and just getting the nut maneuvered into place while you put the screw through the battery terminals was a huge pain in the rear end. They could have and should have done better, it's almost like the engineer of this battery had never looked at how it's done on a traditional battery. ... show more

  • Great safety and power in a small size
Big fan of these sodium ion batteries. Acoucou seems to have delivered an excellent product. Comes with positive and negative terminals covers as well as a pair of bolts with washers and nuts. The battery housing is good quality plastic. There is a battery monitor safety chip on board to prevent bad charging. I was worried about using a li-ion charger but used anyway. Combined with the BMS chip it seems to have charged properly. Na+ sodium ion is what they are starting to use in electric cars. In my opinion most batteries will start converting to something like this soon. It's more cost-effective and better for the environment than lithium. This YTX9A-Na has 250 CCA , 4.25 Ah , and 51Wh. Plenty of power for such a light and small package. Great value compared to lithium and highly recommend. ... show more
