  • The Ultimate Low-Mid Entry Laptop Guide
If you’re in the market for a low-mid entry laptop for both gaming or office use, look no further, this is the laptop for you. Whether for you or someone else you can’t go wrong with this laptop. I decided to create a huge review guide for people like me who just absolutely need to see detailed reviews before they pull the trigger on the product. Below is a pros and cons list and below that is a detailed paragraph about this laptop if you’re a reader :-) Pros - 7th Generation Intel Kaby Lake Processor (this is the only laptop with this under $400) - DDR4 RAM - 1920x1080p Display (again the only laptop with this under $400) - Sleek and beautiful design, looks as feels very nice - Super easy to upgrade (which basically negates the whole cons list if you have the money) - A Type-C Port (this is becoming a habit with this laptop, huh ;-) - Long battery life - No signs of degrading (had this laptop for a year) Cons - 5400 RPM HDD (7200 RPM HHD or SSD recommended) - 4GB of RAM (8 recommended) - Keyboard backlight doesn’t have setting to stay lit indefinitely (turns back off in about 10 seconds of pressing a key) Acer has cracked the ball out of the park with this laptop. This laptop is the best at its price point by a MILE. The only laptop to have a 7th Generation Intel CPU, 1920x1080p display and a Type-C port (I think, dunno for sure, but is very rare in cheaper laptops) at this price range is crazy. This means this laptop performs significantly better and much clearer than the others in the range. Additionally DDR4 RAM doesn’t hurt either, making load times fast as long as you don’t open up a bunch of programs at once. This laptop has a long battery life even with settings turned to “Full Performance” I get a good 3 hours gaming on battery. Lastly, this laptop is just beautiful, the brushed plastic on the back feels and looks nice, and the backlit keyboard surrounded by a brushed metal inside is great as well. Unfortunately not everything is perfect but the cons with this laptop are really just nitpicking. The 5400 RPM HDD and 4 GB of RAM really slow this system down more than it needs too, but fortunately, this system is easily upgradeable, I have upgraded both of those things in less than 30 minutes watching a YouTube tutorial on it. Whenever you get the money, I would recommend the RAM first, then a better hard drive. As you can see this laptop is very good for the price, and that’s a big reason why it has soooo many reviews because it has sold very well and is a big bargain. And this isn’t even a “gaming laptop”, yet I can play games such as CSGO and League of Legends on it because the CPU is so good. Heck, I’ve seen a YouTube video of a guy running GTA V on this laptop which is insane! Hopefully this helps you make a great choice today in purchasing this laptop. I hope you join the rest of us as an owner of this laptop! ... show more

  • So far, really good...
Update: 6/28/17: I wish this updated review would go to the top of the most recent (so the newbie's having issues see it), but I'm guessing it won't. I've had the laptop for about 2 weeks, and use it constantly. I've updated the ram to 8Gb, but really didn't need to rush to do that (ran fine with 4Gb). I don't know why so many people are having issues with this laptop (slow, bad touchpad, crashes, or whatever). I find it hard to believe that Acer would want to deal with so many returns. The most common complaint seems to be slowness (takes forever to load a web page, etc.). I'm guessing (but I could be wrong) that this is due to the laptop being new out of the box, and still in the process of updating, or hasn't been rebooted after the updates, etc (and that the disk drive is running at 100%).. I did tweak a few things. Do a Google search for "making windows 10 run faster", and applied the suggested tweaks. I'm assuming these helped, as my disk drive reports 0-7% usage on average. I couldn't be happier with my laptop (so far). From off to able to use boot time is ~ 45 seconds, screen is great (tweaked the settings a bit), touchpad is fine (turned off all but left/right click, and 1 finger scroll), WiFi (using AC 5Ghz) great, programs load fast, etc. I've tried to load this thing down with 5+ 4K youtube videos, multiple chrome windows open, streaming 2 x movies to chromecast, opening multiple windows of Office, etc (all at the same time), and the laptop didn't flinch! -------------------------------- Original Review: Giving it 4 stars for now. May up to 5, or downgrade during the next review. I've only had it for ~ 24 hours. As of this moment, it's a 5 star bargain! - Unboxed, fired up. Checked for obvious damage/issues (lines on the screen/dead pixels, etc). None found. - It started the setup process. Said No (or turned off) all the Windows 10 privacy questions (personal preference). - Connected to wireless (AC) and the the laptop updated Windows 10 (the full anniversary update). - Wireless speed as it should be (a.k.a. - no wireless issues). Works great. - Should have connected to my router directly with a wired connection as this was a big update. Probably would have been faster. Took ~ 2 hours from start to finish. - After the updates were done, I was having my doubts. Using the touchpad, it was all over the place, zooming, tapping, etc (what seemed by it self), and it seemed to have really slowed down. - In the mean time, I installed Chrome, Firefox, Avast, MalwareBytes. Still sluggish at this point. - Found the various touchpad settings and turned of tapping, zoom, etc (only left on 1 finger scroll, and left & right click). That's how I like it set up, as I can't stand inadvertently having the touchpad do things I don't want. * Had the same setup on the previous HP laptop with the Synaptics touchpad. After these changes, the touchpad is great. - As I said, I was getting a bit disappointed / frustrated with the laptop. Seemed to have really slowed down after the setup. - Rebooted once or twice after making some various changes, adding applications. After the reboots, the sluggishness went away. - Tried to create a recovery disk onto a 16GB flash drive. Opened the Acer Care Center app, and click on on "Recovery Management, create backup (Get Started)". The next screen just sat there with a "please wait" message. Chatted with "Marvin" from Acer support. He emailed me instructions on the procedure to create the recovery disk (Ugh! - I already know how to do that, thanks!). All the while, I waited for the "please wait" message do something. Eventually (like a good 4 minutes later), it went to the next screen, showing the flash drive). Clicked next, and did manage to create a recovery disk. Don't know why it takes so long to get to the next screen, but it did eventually complete the process (took a good hour+ to create the recovery disk). - Keyboard fine (backlit keys are a plus) - Touchpad fine (will take a bit of getting use to after using buttons for the left/right click my HP had) - Display fine (so far just set brightness to 50% (I think it was at 100% originally) - Speed / responsiveness fine (plan to add an additional 4GB of RAM, once I let it break in for a week or so) - If all you're doing is simple web surfing, checking email, etc., the 4GB RAM is probably fine. I don't notice any lag, etc. - Boot time - Hey, it's Windows 10, 5400RPM disk drive, 4GB of RAM. It's going to take a couple of minutes to load. Fine. - Did come with the SSD drive standoff screw. * I may (or may not) add an SSD in the future. Overall (and of this moment), I love it, I think it's a bargain, and would recommend it. I'll update the review in a month or so, and will adjust up to 5, or down if needed... ... show more
