  • One of the best Chromebook experiences you will get.
I got this acer 516 refurbished, and it came in a generic box with a charger. Which honestly for the saving I wish I could get more products like this if I save as much as I did with this. Unit came flawless so I’m assuming that any major flaws were replaced with new parts or at least parts that were not damaged. The top will open without holding onto the bottom. The screen feels 120hz, but when I go to the moving alien craft fps website it doesn’t seem to display it at 120 just at 60. Other programs seem to display it correctly. It’s a little confusing since chromeOS doesn’t have any display options to change this and test. But overall the screen is smoother than a 60hz screen to help with eye strain. Love the small bezel. No touchscreen so if you need that look elsewhere. If your workflow doesn’t need it it’s a great screen. Matt screen and wish the screen was just a tier higher for a IPS display, but still happy for what you get. The reviews about the light up keyboard are correct about it being dim in daylight or bright areas, which is great since it doesn’t blind you at night time when you really use it. The keyboard is fine once you get used to it. Better than school chromebooks like the dell 3100 but don’t expect a mechanical keyboard experience. I’ve replaced acer keyboards before and this one looks no different as in if you do break it you have to replace the whole area where your wrists rest instead of just the keyboard itself which means you kind of have to take apart a lot of the guts inside it. It’s around 100 on eBay when I searched for it. Not difficult just make sure you take a photo of stuff before you take it apart before repair so you have a reference of everything or find a repair manual online. It’s an acceptable typing experience. Super fast for the cpu even though it’s “only” a 12th gen P series intel processor. If you don’t know there’s the u series (ultra low power) P series (middle of the road power draw and performance) and h series (which can have a x or s in the cpu model number, which are comparable to a desktop processor, but you’ll be always looking for a power outlet). The fans to cool it are low, but it’s hard to tax a Chromebook to see if I’m even using it at 100% full blast. But for general use are more quiet then I was expecting. Honestly acer could have gone with a higher U series cpu and dropped the fans but it’s a great experience. The case that holds it seems like plastic, though I read a few comments elsewhere that say the bottom and top is type of metal. If that is true it has a coat of material that feels like plastic. For the size of it it’s light and could carry it on a trip or for work no problem compared to the laptops long ago that felt like you got a barbell in your arm. If you transport this a lot get a case, not sure if there is one for this unit but it’s about as durable as other chromebooks. Your drop it the screen and shell is going to crack. It’s a good overall shell for home use, but beware if you drop it on hard surfaces. I use mine for home use and around work to tackle IT tickets for a school and some other admin monitoring. Can do 99 percent of my workload fast. Would wish I could open it up and put 16 gigs of ram in but 8 feels smooth, I will probably try to solder it and try at some point to tinker a few years down the line. Battery life is fine as long as you don’t max the brightness. And even if you like to will still get the job done. If you need to use this outside for work or play you might want to look for something else that can handle a brighter screen. For general use with around 5 or so tabs open I get about 7 hours, your results will vary. The large screen and the p series processor is what eats up this laptops battery. This is my first acer laptop and I’m grad I got it. Don’t look past it since it’s marketed as a gaming Chromebook. If you want a Chromebook with a big fast screen, fast cpu, enough ram for no slowdowns, a real nvme SSD for storage, don’t pass this up since you don’t play games, it’s great for everything else that’s not a game. If acer makes all their products like this I’ll recommend them for anyone. I would recommend a hub for it so you have more inputs for when your at your desk for peripherals, as you only get one usb type A. ... show more

  • Chrome OS is very good, the 516 GE Intel 12th Gen. Mostly great
October 2024 My baseline for comparison is Dell XPS 13 & Acer spin 714. Came with a few dents and dings, purely cosmetic, speaks to the durability. Screen size, brightness, resolution and picture quality (refresh rate) are excellent. Lack of touch screen was easy to get used to- good track pad helps. The 16" display let's you snap multiple windows as shown in the picture- must have feature for me. Some apps do not function when sized down, may improve as updates roll out. Battery is surprisingly good, (arrived with 9 cycles on the clock! ""And not fully charged..that's a good thing"") Skipping other great features to note issues with my refurbished unit. Both USB-C ports are listed as charging ports, my left port is dead, will send power, but no data or charging capabilities. Check all your ports right away! This machine is fantastic and these refurb units are excellent value, just make sure to thoroughly test them. Assuming a fully functional unit: 5/5 ... show more

  • Great computer
Works great. I'm giving 4 out 5 only b/c it has a big dent on it, when they claimed it was in excellent condition. I think I saved $250 getting it "renewed." No problems with the computer, it's fast.

  • At this price, it's a steal
I bought this mainly to see how the Steam Beta runs on ChromeOS and to check out the new Chromebook Plus features. While I still wouldn't buy this device at full price, the refurbished model is a straight up steal. In my units case, refurbished seems to mean someone bought it to redeem the 3 months free of GEForce Now Ultimate tier and returned it. It looks completely new, battery health is 99 percent, so scuffs or scratches. As for the device itself, the screen is much ballyhooed but I find it underwhelming. It does get bright but it's not the sharpest. The 12th gen i5 running on this machine makes for a great experience and everything is as zippy as you would expect, although it occasionally stalls when running the beta Steam app in the Borealis container. I set up the Crostini container as well, and set up my debian instance with the software store, office suites, and video and audio editing and conversion apps. Handbrake averages around 13 frames per second converting to h.265 at 1080p, and if you're running a windows machine using handbrake for similar projects that sounds horrible but on a Chromebook its a triumph, believe me. Steam runs decent. Besides the games Google lists that officially run (Tomb Raider runs beautifully), I've got a bunch of other games to run on the device, and a few that didn't work at all. As a rule, of the game is 5 years or older it'll probably do okay at low to medium settings, and if it's older like 2014's Tomb Raider you can kinda go all out on high settings. Shadow of the Tomb Raider however, doesn't run at all. Downsides: RAM, storage and ports. I really wish I could have purchased a version of this with 16gb of RAM and 512gbs of storage. In 2023, those things are the minimum requirements for most computers, and I know Chrome OS is less resource intensive but if you set up Linux containers like I do, it's not that much less. The RAM is fast at least. But the big disappointment is there is no SD card slot to expand the storage. Even if you want to use a USB card reader like I am it takes up the one (1) USB-A slot. No micro SD card reader on this device is a big miss, it can't be understated - especially if you're installing games to play locally. ... show more

  • Best Chromebook I’ve had
Lighting fast, the processor is amazing. The large display makes work so much easier. It is super light weight too. A bit hard to travel with due to the size but honestly it’s worth the hassle for such a great machine. Keyboard is great to type, and the trackpad is amazing as well. I honestly have 0 complaints. I bought it refurbished and have been using it for about 7 months now. The color is a nice touch as well, super sleek and nice looking. ... show more
