Description

This book is printed in black and white and designed to be written in - more details below; please read the whole description if you are expecting a coffee-table glossy book. The two A Year With My Camera workbooks accompany the online course of the same name from Emma Davies. You can complete the course just from the workbooks, but if you want to join the online community, find the details at AYearWithMyCamera.com. This is Book 1 in a 2 part series. This is a practical workbook, PRINTED IN BLACK AND WHITE, designed to be written in and picked up every week - not a coffee table book to put on your shelf and never look at. The course is designed to be finished, and this is not a glamorous, well-finished book, it is a rough-and-ready work book - it's for people who want to finally understand their camera, not just read about it. Be warned - there are plenty of photographs and illustrations, but they are NOT COLOUR and they are not fine art quality. Most people who open this book breathe a sigh of relief, realising they don't have to learn everything all at once. It's a very liberating approach to photography. You will start by building the foundations (chapters 1-6), and then, with a solid base to support you, you will grow your creativity and find your personal style (chapters 7-18). Please use the “Look Inside” feature which is enabled - you can see the workbook nature of the book before you buy, and check it is what you are expecting. Read more

  • Best Photography Book!
Format: Paperback
Awesome book! Very easy to follow- Emma walks you through step by step and slowly puts everything together. She includes plenty of quizzes and homework assignments so you can make sure you understand each topic before moving on. This book has been invaluable to getting off Auto and capturing the photographs I envision. After only a few lessons, I was already more competent than the "professional" wedding photographer I hired. If you pair this with her email course, you get access to her exclusive Facebook group, where you can learn alongside other beginner and intermediate photographers. Emma ensures that the group is supportive, and it's a great place to get help or feedback if you have any questions. You also get to be inspired by photographers around the world, who are all taking this journey with you! I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to start photography or learn their camera better! ... show more

  • Take the course! But the books!! Take the course! But the books!!
Format: Paperback
I started the free A Year With My Camera course on Facebook in January 2018 expecting that I would simply follow the complete instructions as I received them in each week's email. That worked fine, actually, but I was printing them out to save them, so why not buy the first book? I did and I am so happy I did. Because I am a notetaker, having the book provides a place for me to jot down thoughts, settings, etc., all in one place that I can always refer to in the future. It is a large-format paperback, solid in its construction and beyond helpful in the way it gradually presents information. I have learned so much about my camera in just four lessons, and I know I can always refresh my knowledge by reading through the book again. Emma Davies' course is a wonderful surprise that I am so pleased showed up in my Facebook feed. The accompanying books make the learning that much more thorough and enjoyable, and the books' prices are certainly reasonable (one book for each half of the year-long course). Take the course. Get the books. ... show more

  • A wonderful book that takes you through step-by-step
Format: Paperback
I have been dabbling in photography for years as a hobby. In the past few years I have wanted to learn how to improve my shots and really use my camera to it's fullest extent. I had tried other photography books, and I had found myself overwhelmed with trying to understand the content. Emma Davies has done a great job of putting these books together and paring down the concepts into small bits for the user to understand. I love how each lesson in A Year With My Camera slowly builds upon what I have learned in previous lessons. I am only 5 weeks into the lessons and I have learned so much already! I can't wait to build upon what I have already learned and to continue to grow and create better photos. ... show more

  • Super helpful
Format: Paperback
Emma is a great teacher. I’ve been taking photographs since I can remember but knew that I was missing some technical knowledge here and there. In her book she puts it all together in a concise and effective way. It cleared up all my knowledge gaps! She also realizes that some aspects are harder to grasp than others and keeps reminding the reader/student that’s it’s ok to not be able to understand certain things right away and to just move on and that it’s gets clearer. The book is not overwhelming at all and has lots of space for notes and also larger print so it’s easy to read. The large print and spacing and clear graphics are a huge plus as it makes everything well organized and easy to see. ... show more

  • Totally Worth the Price and More Totally Worth the Price and More
Format: Paperback
This book combined with the FREE Facebook course Emma Davies runs three times a year is an incredible bargain. I have taken family pics since I was a youngster with a Kodak Instamatic and had a Cannon Sureshot film camera when my boys were growing up. I treated myself with a fancy Lumix for Christmas after using a Fuji Finepix for probably almost ten years mostly for use in website work. I called it the drunken school of photography - just take a lot of shots and hope some of them turned out. After getting the Lumix, I took an evening class at the camera store on how to use Lumix cameras. There are so many settings on this camera. I knew then I was going to need more instruction or the camera would turn out to be a waste of money. Emma's free class came up in my Facebook feed one day and I figured for free, why not? I ended up with this book and in addition paid for the accompanying online videos she hosts at Teachable.com . I have found the videos super helpful with then using the book homework for reinforcement. The way she breaks things down one step at a time is a fantastic teaching approach. I also like putting my homework pics online and in the workbook. When I first got the camera, I was almost afraid to hold it. This step by step weekly lessons has really made me a lot more comfortable. For all the photos I have taken (and I have boxes and boxes), this is first time in my life I have ever shot on manual, let alone understanding what all the settings on my camera do. I cannot recommend Emma Davies as a photography instructor enough! ... show more

  • Totally worth the price
Format: Paperback
I bought both vol. 1 and 2 of the A Year With My Camera books to go with the free online course. The books go into more detail that the weekly emails and provided a place for me to take notes, write ideas, and highlight information that I know I will need to refer back to again and again. The books are well-organized, easy to understand, and a fantastic accompaniment to the free online course. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to get off auto mode on their cameras. ... show more

  • A photography workshop guide
Format: Paperback
If you like to learn by being guided step by step, and like to keep a written record of your learning and understanding, this book is an excellent guide. Self-paced, it will take you through the very beginning basics of photography all the way through to something approximating being a photographer. There is an online course which accompanies this workbook and that I also highly recommend. The course is free and will connect you to a community of people doing what you are doing. There is also opportunity to, for a small fee, purchase videos that further delve into aspects of the course. I credit this workbook and the online course with helping me to develop my ability to “see” and, at the same time, learn how to use my camera. However, this is not a course in specific camera usage. For that you will need to read the manual that accompanies your specific camera. Also, if I recall correctly, the Composition portion of this course/workbook can be done using an iPhone. ... show more
