Description

This book is printed in black and white and designed to be written in - more details below; please read the whole description if you are expecting a coffee-table glossy book. The two A Year With My Camera workbooks accompany the online course of the same name from Emma Davies. You can complete the course just from the workbooks, but if you want to join the online community, find the details at AYearWithMyCamera.com. This is Book 1 in a 2 part series. This is a practical workbook, PRINTED IN BLACK AND WHITE, designed to be written in and picked up every week - not a coffee table book to put on your shelf and never look at. The course is designed to be finished, and this is not a glamorous, well-finished book, it is a rough-and-ready work book - it's for people who want to finally understand their camera, not just read about it. Be warned - there are plenty of photographs and illustrations, but they are NOT COLOUR and they are not fine art quality. Most people who open this book breathe a sigh of relief, realising they don't have to learn everything all at once. It's a very liberating approach to photography. You will start by building the foundations (chapters 1-6), and then, with a solid base to support you, you will grow your creativity and find your personal style (chapters 7-18). Please use the “Look Inside” feature which is enabled - you can see the workbook nature of the book before you buy, and check it is what you are expecting. Read more

Increasing my knowledge

  • Super helpful
Emma is a great teacher. I’ve been taking photographs since I can remember but knew that I was missing some technical knowledge here and there. In her book she puts it all together in a concise and effective way. It cleared up all my knowledge gaps! She also realizes that some aspects are harder to grasp than others and keeps reminding the reader/student that’s it’s ok to not be able to understand certain things right away and to just move on and that it’s gets clearer. The book is not overwhelming at all and has lots of space for notes and also larger print so it’s easy to read. The large print and spacing and clear graphics are a huge plus as it makes everything well organized and easy to see. ... show more

  • Totally Worth the Price and More
This book combined with the FREE Facebook course Emma Davies runs three times a year is an incredible bargain. I have taken family pics since I was a youngster with a Kodak Instamatic and had a Cannon Sureshot film camera when my boys were growing up. I treated myself with a fancy Lumix for Christmas after using a Fuji Finepix for probably almost ten years mostly for use in website work. I called it the drunken school of photography - just take a lot of shots and hope some of them turned out. After getting the Lumix, I took an evening class at the camera store on how to use Lumix cameras. There are so many settings on this camera. I knew then I was going to need more instruction or the camera would turn out to be a waste of money. Emma's free class came up in my Facebook feed one day and I figured for free, why not? I ended up with this book and in addition paid for the accompanying online videos she hosts at Teachable.com . I have found the videos super helpful with then using the book homework for reinforcement. The way she breaks things down one step at a time is a fantastic teaching approach. I also like putting my homework pics online and in the workbook. When I first got the camera, I was almost afraid to hold it. This step by step weekly lessons has really made me a lot more comfortable. For all the photos I have taken (and I have boxes and boxes), this is first time in my life I have ever shot on manual, let alone understanding what all the settings on my camera do. I cannot recommend Emma Davies as a photography instructor enough! ... show more

  • Great way to learn
I love this book and absolutely suggest getting it if you want to learn without being overwhelmed with too much information. You also have a community of people to help you on their app!

  • Yes and No
Some things are explained well in this book, BUT many things are not & there are so many typos & it keeps referencing a Facebook group to join for support but the group no longer exists. There’s even a lesson that’s supposed to be explaining histograms that is so loaded with errors that I still don’t understand the topic. So very frustrating. ... show more

  • Take the course! But the books!!
I started the free A Year With My Camera course on Facebook in January 2018 expecting that I would simply follow the complete instructions as I received them in each week's email. That worked fine, actually, but I was printing them out to save them, so why not buy the first book? I did and I am so happy I did. Because I am a notetaker, having the book provides a place for me to jot down thoughts, settings, etc., all in one place that I can always refer to in the future. It is a large-format paperback, solid in its construction and beyond helpful in the way it gradually presents information. I have learned so much about my camera in just four lessons, and I know I can always refresh my knowledge by reading through the book again. Emma Davies' course is a wonderful surprise that I am so pleased showed up in my Facebook feed. The accompanying books make the learning that much more thorough and enjoyable, and the books' prices are certainly reasonable (one book for each half of the year-long course). Take the course. Get the books. ... show more

  • Worth every penny!
I took a photography class at my local community college, I watched YouTube tutorials, I took Nikon classes, and joined photography groups on social media. None of those combined have taught me all I've learned from A Year With My Camera. I'm about six months into the course and have learned so much! If you're at all interested in photography, I highly recommend you give this a try. Emma Davies does an amazing job teaching the subject and making it easily understandable. I'm a hands on learner so having the book in addition to the app is incredibly helpful! ... show more
