The Leica Manual (Lester & Morgan) was published from 1935, the first edition, until the last 15th edition in 1973, in which only Morgan was involved from the original two authors. These books are a requisite for Leica collectors of the period the book covers. It offers photographic instruction, discussions, and techniques using the latest Leica equipment of the time, going far beyond the instructions that came with the equipment it covers. The books are full of photographs that epitomize the photographic style of the times as well. This is particularly interesting in early volumes which illustrate images which had the potential to become fascist posters. In fact, if you look closely, you will find a few swastikas in these early editions. The last tome is more innocuous politically, but still is full of practical information regarding the use of period Leica equipment you will likely not find except from an old timer photographer. And, from the collectors point of view, it's the last ever. I'm still looking for a first edition in pristine condition. Since Leica has all but stopped production of film cameras, these books are going to become even more collectable and eventually rare. ... show more

It's dated, yes... but not if you own an M5 (or earlier) Leica (or Leicaflex SL, or its predecessor). Even if you don't, there are useful chapters treating such subjects as photomicrography, telephoto photography, and Ansel Adams' Zone System (Mr. Adams wrote that chapter). There are also some very fine photographs. Plus, it's cloth bound (a bonus), so it will last. ... show more

Interestig book, it contain many articles on different topics, from basics (for example: setting up an ideal travel set...) to more advanced (there is even an article by Ansel Adams). Great pictures inside, heavy book with many pictures.
